It's easily the hardest course I have ever played, and all the more brutal for the open. You just can't go for the flag on any hole except the par 3 9th which is unique, there are two tee boxes that the USGA will have the players use. First of all they are both 200+ from the cup but one is 100 feet above the hole and the other is 20 feet below the pin. There will probably be at least one or two holes in one on the hole. There has never been a hole like this in any open.
There is also a massive bunker in the middle of the fairway on 18 that you need a ladder to get in and out of. It's 11 feet deep.
The one tree is on the nicest hole on the course it's called the lone fir that was left there when the course was built. Some idiot tried to chop it down when the course was built but they brought in all these tree experts, built literally a metal splint to strengthen it and saved the damn thing. It's # 15 par 3.

You are going to have some good golfers hit great 2nd shots and end up with a terrible lie and lose their minds. You can count on it.
I honestly think the cream will rise to the top. The best players in the world will be there at the end. You might have some lesser known player shoot a nice round and lead for a bit but they will blow up as the course changes from day to day. In the end on a course this hard it will be the best fighting it out. I'm predicting anywhere from -2 to +1 win it with a legitimate shot at an 18 hole playoff on Monday. I just don't expect anyone to run away with this. Should be just a fabulous tournament to watch with Fox having spent the GDP of a small nation to broadcast it coming up with some unique coverage as well. You think very long rounds? Someone who is a little seasoned?older and with patience?
Nothing on the damn course is level, when I joked that I turned my caddy Juan during one round into a sherpa I was not kidding. I have played it multiple times and was exhausted each time without carrying my own clubs.I read somewhere that the tee boxes are not level...that seems evil.
Love these picks.I do a pool with my friends in which you have to select 3 golfers from the top 20 world rankings and then 3 from the rest of the field. My picks are:
Rickie Fowler
Justin Rose
Dustin Johnson
Brandt Snedeker
Zach Johnson
Francesco Molinari
Jordan Spieth's caddy was a caddy at Chambers Bay for years. He is from the area. The narrative on Sunday afternoon will be the player/caddy team that has the most amount of trust between them. The winner will be a "cerebral" golfer. None of them have enough rounds on the course to know all the nooks and crannies and awkward positions. The player who can figure out the course the fastest has a leg up. Players and caddies are going to have trust numbers and work as a team.
I don't know which player/caddy combos are considered the best teams, but if I had that type of information, I'd be dumping my money on a few of them.
Fox getting the US Open sucks, the coverage has been awful. Never thought I would miss Johnny Miller, but I do.
Tiger has gone from being one of the top two golfers of all time to a player who isn't even close to making cuts.
Just no.His physical ailments and personal life isn't unique compared to other athletes.
Tiger looked to be under control with his swing on the practice tee when he was hitting long irons and driver. He can't bring it to the course now.
Just no.
His personal life is bizarre and unique and unprecedented. Heart of his career, married to gorgeous woman, beautiful kids, most dominant player in his game, ever, and it's not close, gets caught banging dog-ugly skanks and grade-D smut starletts, gets dumped, loses family, loses game, loses life. What other athlete's path remotely nears that?
I love watching golf played on the West Coast. How great is it to watch the US Open Live at 9pm after the kids and wife are asleep?

It's awesome.
I'm not even a huge golf fan, but having bonus sports on television like that is great.
