This actually makes sense on a lot of levels, including the fact that Notre Dame can afford to eat the differential between the ACC distribution and the big east distribution. Particularly with Notre Dame's history of taking slights against its program personally.

Playing more SEC and Big Ten teams bolsters Notre Dame's résumé potentially elevating it in any CFP analysis. I can see the SEC and Big Ten being open to this because of the value and draw of Notre Dame games. But I wonder about their willingness to bolster a future Notre Dame's argument for a spot in the CFP.

I think the SEC is open to it, the Big 10 would be tougher.

On the other hand, I could see the Big Ten being reluctant to have Notre Dame creep into the SEC's sphere of influence.

It's an interesting idea.
 
ND’s football situation isn’t radically different from UConn basketball. Each brings disproportionate value to its conference, but both are treated and paid as if they’re interchangeable with any other member.

UConn basketball may already be following a strategy similar to the author's proposed ND football strategy. Tonight is the third time this week a UConn team will be broadcast nationally on FOX, and this year’s aggressive out-of-conference schedule, with an intent to repeat it going forward, looks like a signal that the way media prices basketball is starting to change (think emphasis on branded matchups in high-value broadcast windows vs. overall conference broadcast averages).

Anything that induces conference chaos is good with me.

They can't compete on that level. If they played a tougher schedule they would be exposed. They want to preserve the illusion.

You underestimate our ND friends. I could see them looking for games in the middle of the SEC and Big Ten. That would allow them relatively quality wins without bumping up against other CFP teams.

I'm not saying it's happening. I'm just trying to think about how it could happen and be successful for all parties.

ND football gets paid $60 million a year. They also get $20 million from the ACC for their Olympic sports. If anything, they are overpaid.

No doubt. They get paid that to degrade ACC basketball for a few highly rated football games and some highfalutin institutional shine. It is unbelievable how little the ACC cares about bball these days.
 
NDSU to FBS makes sense from a results perspective (i.e merit), but this is really the end of a golden age for them. Not sure how I would feel if I were an NDSU fan.

Sac State is basically trying to pay anyone to take them. The fact that they are coming to play a game at Maine this year (no one comes to play at Maine) tells you everything. They reek of desperation.

Sacramento State has no money. I don’t know why people keep falling for this.

The school is absolutely broke. Every dime they spend on sports comes directly from student fees. They don’t have $5M to pay the fee to upgrade and they definitely do not have another $10M to bribe a conference.

The president is a blithering idiot. The school is having to lay off faculty and admin due to budget deficits and his plan to help reverse that is to make more revenue by going to FBS in football.

Let that sink in. His plan is to pay $5M to the NCAA, $10M to a conference, forgo conference revenue and….make money that way.

In his own words when talking about Sac State’s budget - “The university is a disaster.”

But I guess he has a plan.

Remember, the ACC pays Notre Dame $20 million to also broadcast 2 or 3 ND football games per year when the ACC school is the home team. Based on ratings, you could argue that ND is underpaid for the ACC football games.

Yep. They could say they are reinstituting rivalry games against Michigan St., Illinois, Northwestern, USC, Purdue, Stanford, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, even PSU. They have played these teams a lot.

In the SEC, they have 10+ games only against LSU and Oklahoma. So that's a bit tougher.

If the Big Ten won't do it, the SEC likely will. ND and the SEC have already been scheduling a number of future games (Alabama, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Auburn, etc.)

Sankey does not want anything to push ND into the Big Ten. Sankey and Pete Bevacqua talk all the time and have a good relationship.

If Fox and NBC don't want to make any money from games against ND, the SEC will.

ND has scheduled SEC opponents (recently and in the future) like Texas A&M, Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Florida, etc....

You are completely wrong about ND's talent level. ND may be rated #1 in the country going into next season.

Marcus Freeman has transformed ND's talent level.

For instance, ND had the combined #1 recruiting and transfer portal class this year.

ND went a decade without recruiting a 5 star. This year? ND signed five 5 star recruits, plus got four former 5 star recruits in the portal.

No, except for contingency plans like any other school. I am merely saying that ND is aggressively scheduling going forward.

ND is likely looking for the ability to move its other sports into the Big East and have scheduling agreements with the SEC and./or the Big Ten as an independent in the event the ACC implodes.

(ND could do a 3-4 game scheduling with a P2 conference right now and that would not affect or breach its ACC deal.)

That will be their plan rather than joining the Big Ten in that event.

These guys do not even have a plan. They have some AI renderings of a stadium and it's gotten them so many headlines.

It's almost comical, but it kinda shows the state of the media these days. A guy like Ross Dellinger will print whatever you tell him. He won't even do a 20 second google search like I did.

No one should be worrying about Notre Dame. They’re not worried about themselves, so stop wishcasting scenarios where they’re forced to do something they don’t want to do - it never happens.
