Tim Boyle Continues to Impress

Casey Cochran was a good college QB. There is no shame in being out performed by him. Cochran also had his growth as a player hurt by Diaco. Cochran should have come in before Boyle as he had the advantage of a redshirt and Boyle was a true frosh. Passing over Casey to play Boyle was another of Diaco's dumb moves. If CC didn't get hurt, I think that he had the ability to develop into one of UConn's better QBs.

IIRC, Boyle was inserted as starter by Pasqualoni 14 hours before the latter was fired. Weist should have pulled the reigns on that plan and maintained Boyle's redshirt. Diaco named Cochran co-starter with Whitmer to start '14.

A couple more games like this and I think Boyle can make the practice squad. I have seen all I need of Brent Hundley and think they should go with Kizer to back up Rodgers.

Casey had been at UCONN 20 MONTHS before he got on the field, Boyle was at UCONN 2 months before being thrown to the wolves. The decision to put Boyle in there when he clearly was not ready is the definition of incompetence. No doubt Casey had an elite QB mind, probably better than most NFL QB's. Plus Casey was coached up by a football genius father.

Shireffs was an excellent runner which as I stated makes things easier for everybody and loosens up the defense. He also was a third year player by the time he played for UCONN.

Whitmer had the JUCO year and also was a 3rd year player (notice a trend?) before he got on the field at UCONN. Experience and practice time matters. Boyle showed he was improving in the Houston game, he made some nice throws to get the win but he was never going to overcome Shireff's ability to run so he wisely transferred.

We scored 20 points against Houston. We scored 7 on the opening drive with Shireffs. We scored 7 on the flea flicker where, by all rights, the DE should have intercepted Boyle's lateral and run with it for a defensive TD. And besides that, in 53 minutes he led us to two FGs.

The denial about how poor he was when he got opportunities here is truly amazing.

How hard is it to understand that he could go on to the Pro Bowl AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW HE PERFORMED AT UCONN?

He threw one TD to thirteen INTs in three years of time. Pretty sure you or I could achieve that.

I never said he accomplished anything at UCONN, It's my opinion that he would have succeeded at UCONN if he had competent coaching and more talented teammates when he was here. That's it. The fact that his talent is now being realized bears that out.

Nebrich got out of Dodge because he realized clowns were running the show. The team quit during the Buffalo game because they realized clowns were running the show.

I don't doubt he had/has NFL arm strength. That's something you either have or you don't. But it takes a lot more than NFL arm strength to be a good QB.

Look, I have nothing against this young man and I am rooting for him to succeed. But let's not start a myth that he never had a chance to succeed here. He had chances and he never showed the ability. Is that all his fault? No, of course not. But the bottom line is that we had other QBs who, with the same chance in various years, showed more.

BL, you are whistling past the Diaco graveyard of offensive game plans.

Put any NFL punt returner in his system and how do you think he would fare? Same holds true for QB.

If there was any offensive normalcy and offensive talent here during that period - Tim would have gotten coached up and would have had a great career at UConn.

Just getting into a practice game as a QB is quite a feat. As an athlete you have a chance for a team to try and turn you into a pro level player if you are a pitcher with heat, a WR with speed, a PG with a handle or a QB with a rocket arm.
So Tim makes a summer roster and Lagow didn't.

Weist actually agrees with you. We had dinner several years ago and I asked him that question. His answer implied that while he was wary of starting Boyle he felt the media buildup and public anticipation was too great for him to pull the plug on the idea. This was his first shot at being HC.
My impression was that if he’d been longer in that role he likely would have demurred.

He went to mini-camp with the Eagles, so I would definitely say he “sniffed” an NFL camp.

Whitmer was invited to try out at mini-camp and sent packing. I was referring to training camp. But technically, you're correct, he had a sniff, at a mini-camp.
