If this happens there are three overwhelming positives to it.
  1. This is the best case scenario for dealing with the fact that we didn't have an understudy to Bazz/Boat on the team this year. We get a guy that started 23 games his freshman year who gets a year to understudy Bazz/Boat before hitting the floor and taking the wheel in his "Sophomore"(junior) year.
  2. As a top 20 4 star guy coming out of highschool (averaged 8+ ppg in 25mpg at NC State) he would be the first elite pedigree recruit to "cross the line" under Ollie anchoring the 2014 class and signaling to blue chippers that UConn is still a destination program.
  3. This one is a stretch, but he may keep Omar around for another year if he is a borderline lottery pick next year, they've been friends since middle school.

Omar from NYC and Purvis from Raleigh are friends?

http://zagsblog.com/articles/omar-calhoun-recruiting-purvis-to-uconn/

Omar Calhoun wants Rodney Purvis to join him in the UConn backcourt in 2012.
Calhoun, the Christ the King Star, has committed to the Huskies and is now working on getting his old friend Purvis to join him.
“I talk to him from time to time,” Calhoun told SNY.tv. “We have been friends since the seventh and eighth grade. He would be a tremendous addition to the UConn family. With myself, Ryan Boatright and Shabazz Napier, the legacy of UConn basketball will continue to be in full effect.”

I did.
I suspect he is better than Samuels. But no one really knows.
But yeah, if he wants to play PG, Samuels is the other kid here who plans on being the starting PG.

Competition only makes for better players. They'll both get time if they play well. With a plethora good quick, athletic guards, maybe Ollie can slap on a nice press. Those days were fun.

no to bash Terrence because i REALLY like him. But......Purvis is on a completely different level. He was a McD AA and 5 star recruit out oh high school. If we get Rodney Purvis, I would expect that he gets priority for playing time.

I'd just expect these guys to simply make each other better... Competition breeds excellence. Looking for Samuel to step up to the challenge...

Remember when they would mention the battles between Kemba, Shabazz & Ryan?

IMO Purvis, with a year to train and learn under much better teaching for guard skills, will be an All-American candidate, lottery-pick type player in 2014-2015. Huge pickup, if it comes to fruition.

I saw on the ESPN blog someone saying he might go to VCU. No chance. He chose NC State over UCONN and said it was a tough call then plus he has friends on the Huskies. As I said in a post yesterday, Purvis must really hate Gottried to have made this move. Bitter NC State fans on ESPN.com were blaming his mother for the transfer (and also knocking Purvis' free-throw shooting). I'm not buying the mom angle. I think it's hatred for Gottfried. I also think Ollie is the deal changer in this. Purvis' family is strongly Christian and must love Ollie. I'd be shocked if he doesn't become a Husky.

I would say its almost a done deal that he will end up at UConn.

This would be a huge get in terms of showing that UConn isn't going anywhere. He is a "franchise" player.

All I can say is I am so glad KO is our coach. He is going to be a recruiting force over the next decade as he improves. Whether Purvis actually comes to UConn or not the fact that we are even in the mix is a great credit to our coach. We are very lucky to have him.

Completely agree. I love all the talk about RP coming to UConn. As you said, it lets everyone know that UConn basketball is still UConn basketball.

Part of an older RP article-

Capable of getting to the rim consistently, Purvis seems to go through stretches where he's too eager to settle for pull-up jump shots. He's a decent shooter at this point, but he needs to improve the consistency of his catch and shoot jumper, develop his decision-making, and learn to play at different speeds to become a more efficient offensive player.

Though Purvis is more of a ball-dominant scoring guard in the mold of Rodney Stuckey at the moment, he does show the ability to make plays for his teammates as well, particularly in drive and dish situations. It wouldn't be surprising to see Purvis spend significant time at the point guard position in the future, but he'll need to develop his court vision to maximize his talents as a passer.

On the defensive end, Purvis has the makings of a quality stopper. He handled the NBA guards he was asked to match up with during the late-night Boost Mobile Elite 24 scrimmage far better than many of his peers, showing how his physical maturity, lateral quickness, and aggressiveness can work to his advantage when he's dialed in.

One of the most highly regarded guards in this class, Purvis's decision to re-open his recruitment has him garnering attention from most of the top programs in the country. Though he has some things to work on, his physical attributes make him an intriguing long-term prospect.

I don't know if it's a done deal, but anytime you can add a McD's AA guard, you might as well go ahead and do it.

uh, the guy was making fun of Purvis for now having to play games in Greenville. As though Greensboro or Winston-Salem (where he'd play some games had he stayed) had any more to recommend it. It doesn't.

Can't claim to know a lot about it, but having been there a few times, I think the Winston-Salem area, for a place built on sucking oxygen out of people's lungs, isn't all that bad. Greater downtown Storrs does have unbeatable charm, though. He'll love it there.

The best point for UConn is that Coach Ollie would be the best person to fix everything that is not quite up to snuff in his game.
