I wonder if he can play PG, I know he was listed as a combo PG/SG in the scouting reports but usually whenever someone with SG size is talked about as having the ability to play PG that usually turns out to be hyperbole. If he could that would take care of a recruiting need for '14.

That would take care of a Major recruiting need for '14 as it seems we are not in the mix for a lot of PGs in that class... In comparison to SGs.

Well, if he comes here he won't be competing with Shabazz. Perhaps with Boat. Definitely with Samuel.

All of our best teams have 3 guard sets with 2 guards basically handling the point guard duties. Boat might still be with us so we would have both of them handling the ball but there is a good chance Boat will be gone by then. If I had to guess we would have Hiil or Carrigton sharing the duties with Purvis.

His transfer year sitting out, will allow UConn's staff to determine if he's PG worthy & hopefully enough time recruit a PG, if he's not. They'll probably need another PG in the long run any ways with only Purvis/Samuel as our only real ball handlers. I don't count Calhoun as a solid ball handler and I think Boatright may be gone. And how would this affect recruiting for 2014?

Until Ollie starts landing SF studs like Ahmed Hill, it's a near certainty that he is going to go with 3 guard lineups. Big guard, combo and PG, with another ball handling PG as backup. There will be need for at least 4 highly recruited guards playing 3 positions.

Purvis would basically be a 2014 recruit at PG/SG, it seems like the only high major PG we're involved with for that class at this point in time is McLaughlin, who is going to be extremely difficult to get from out West. Getting Purvis would basically solve that issue since Bazz would be gone and its highly likely Boat would be as well. Who knows what could happen after the summer evaluation period though, UConn might get involved with someone at PG that we're not aware of.

Having Hill at SF is basically a 3 guard lineup, he's Omar's size but a better ballhandler. I see your point tho, I think KO would much rather have squads that mirror our title teams or the ones he played on instead of having some super sized 6'7"-6'8" guy with a limited handle playing SF. Rashad is really the only one that sticks out as not fitting that 3rd guard model since he really couldn't handle or drive, but his shooting was at such an elite level that it didn't matter. Omar showed alot of improvement in his decision making and handle as the season progressed, would still still rather have him paired with 2 ballhandlers tho.

Yes, exactly. I think it's hard to recruit those 6'6 to 6'7 types with a handle, especially if they can shoot. They are almost as rare as the centers with an offensive game.

Here is what a NC State fan wrote on ESPN about Purvis to UConn:

Hmmm, would be interesting if we could land both Peak & Hill to share those Swingman minutes. I'd like someone like Black who sounds like he could swing between SF/PF for times when we need someone bigger at the SF position. So maybe PG Purvis/Samuel, SG Calhoun/Carrington, Swingman Hill/Peak, PF Facey/Black and/or Abu... Center Amida/Nolan/Chuckwu. Sneak in Tolksdorf in there somewhere for 13 players. Ok, I'm getting carried away here...

"Purvis has not made any indication of which school he is attending next, but CBS Sports' Jeff Goodman reports that UConn is expected to be in the mix for the 6'3, 195-pound guard."

I gather it's a "southern" inside joke - be happy it makes no sense to you. I am.

Edit - I know that is where ECU is: what I don't know, and am happy to not know, is what makes going there different from going anywhere else in NC.

uh, the guy was making fun of Purvis for now having to play games in Greenville. As though Greensboro or Winston-Salem (where he'd play some games had he stayed) had any more to recommend it. It doesn't.

I don't really see him coming here if he has to compete for minutes. If he comes here ollie must have told him hell be starting at one of the guard slots.

With Bazz and possibly Boat gone he'll have a great chance to start.

I did.

I suspect he is better than Samuels. But no one really knows.

But yeah, if he wants to play PG, Samuels is the other kid here who plans on being the starting PG.

If this happens there are three overwhelming positives to it.
  1. This is the best case scenario for dealing with the fact that we didn't have an understudy to Bazz/Boat on the team this year. We get a guy that started 23 games his freshman year who gets a year to understudy Bazz/Boat before hitting the floor and taking the wheel in his "Sophomore"(junior) year.
  2. As a top 20 4 star guy coming out of highschool (averaged 8+ ppg in 25mpg at NC State) he would be the first elite pedigree recruit to "cross the line" under Ollie anchoring the 2014 class and signaling to blue chippers that UConn is still a destination program.
  3. This one is a stretch, but he may keep Omar around for another year if he is a borderline lottery pick next year, they've been friends since middle school.
