Additionally, the ACC still needs to determine how they want to get to nine conference games a year. The only (public) proposal to date is counting ND games as conference games but making that solution appear equitable enough for conference members to vote in favor may not be easy. I'm also not sure that ND plays a sufficient number ACC games to pull this off. A solution where we could temporarily park our football program in the ACC (something no other G level school can offer) may be floated in the near future.

this is where I think the ACC is in trouble. First, the ACC and SMU set an awful precedent by forgoing revenue share. SMU might be able to afford it but most programs can't, and it may only work for SMU in the ACC which is struggling. Second, it would make no sense to invite a program which would be set up to fail. The ACC would want a football program to succeed but that program can't succeed in the conference without revenue share.

I think either the Big 12 or ACC will survive as a somewhat "power" conference, and it will be the Big 12. Each needs to be making the best strategic moves, not necessarily the best short-term-profitable moves. The ACC has been awful strategically, it has been all over the map, literally. The Big 12 got the Corner 4 Birthday Gift.

Conclusion: UConn may eventually end up in whatever carcass remains of the ACC after the other 3 conferences have fed

SMU won the ACC last year and still in the running to win the conference again. For SMU I think their big donors wanted to just get into the P4 since football is over the top important in Texas.

I believe UConn could not get the CFP pay outs that the conference received unless they made the CFP. I would guess they would get the basketball NCAA credits.

The goal is obviously a P4 invite. But unless that happens, I think parking football ONLY in the PAC or AAC is much better than remaining independent. It’s going to get harder to schedule as an independent going forward. But I think more importantly, the achievable season goal for top teams in these conferences is getting a spot in the CFB playoff. To me, that’s a far bigger motivator for players, coaches, recruits & fans than the goal of becoming bowl eligible (basically a winning record). I don’t think Uconn has any path to the playoff with their independent schedule. Which is why I think FB programs like USF, Memphis, Tulane, JMU, Boise have the FB edge over us & get more national exposure.

If UConn can get to 9 or 10 wins this year, my hope is they start being viewed as a program that can strengthen these FB conferences.

I agree that a football only invite to a solid G5 would be a good option, but it also depends on the strings attached. If it requires substantial challenges to leave, such as a long notice period and/or a big termination fee, it may not be worth it if we still think a P4 invite is possible. We flexibility. No grant of rights, not big termination fees.

There is an argument and I think a rather strong one, that while this deal would absolutely suck, that joining the ACC cements UConn's rise to a top tier institution that would be very meaningful in the decades to come. And by meaningful, I mean it a form of economic development that could be very effective for the state over the next 30 to 50 years. If I was choosing economic development levers for the state, I would pull the 'UConn to the ACC subsidy lever.'

Completely agree, but I just don't think the politicians in this state have the vision to approve something like this. Some politician will scream that the up-front cost is too much for sports and everyone else will back down. It's why we don't have a stadium on campus and also why the proposed UConn ND home and home football series which could have possibly helped us with an ACC invite was never approved. I don't want to get political, but I'm glad that Lamont is running again. From what I've observed he appears to be pro UConn. If he wins, that would be my only hope at this point.

I’d definitely rather be in a P4. It’s UConn’s goal & it should be.
But if Uconn doesn’t get a legit P4 invite (not like SMUs deal), my point is I’d rather be in a G5 conference than remain independent because it at least gives Uconn a realistic shot at an automatic playoff spot. An independent has to get an at invite & I doubt they’d ever give one to Uconn with their independent schedule (& take a spot away from a P2).

Deal now meaning current BE media and other side deals with CBS sports.

There is no reason UConn should put itself in a worse financial position while being the dominant college basketball program and having a resurgent football program.

Maybe this year. I was arguing the same thing but was informed it was a fluke and we would not be competitive in the ACC year in/year out. Reread the last couple pages of this thread and see for yourself.

So if we wouldn’t be competitive in the ACC, and there isn’t much difference between the winner of the G5 conferences and the winner of the ACC, how could we magically be the best G5 team? Doesn't add up.

A Hard Pass? We can still Schedule 3 or 4 ACC teams. However, I'd rather be in the PAC than an AAC football only.My first choice would be Big 12, then ACC then PAC then AAC. Independent in football will not be sustainable. If we got into the ACC, any game with Duke would be classics and I'd love to see Cal or Stanford at the Rent... Kansas vs UConn basketball or ASU/UConn basketball would be fun if we hit the Big12...

I'm not suggesting we should, just that a 600 million price tag to join a P4 is so ridiculous, it could pay for something as inconceivable as an on campus stadium. The Rent is great.

Spend more? It's in acquisition of talent for the resources you have= maximizing value. Mora is finding different way to build roster. BC is trying to build the roster like clemson builds their roster.

In 2024 we went 1-3 against the ACC, losing by 7 or less in the 3 losses, 2 on the road. This year to date we are 2-1, with the only loss in OT on the road. I know it’s not the top of the ACC but I would say we are competitive now and will only improve with a move to P4.

Not sure we have zero leverage but it’s certainly a weak position. I would agree to take in zero dollars related to football for the first 5 or so years, maybe something performance related. Extra ticket sales should make up the little money we get from CBS now, but we have to receive revenue for our 2 basketball teams in line with the basketball allotment . We need to keep NCAA credits and some baseline.
