Who's saying one or the other? Its clear we need shooters, but some are acting as if we don't need a guard who can get into the paint. As if we've ever won a championship without one

need hawkins in there for his shooting. it's not a popular opinion but aj hasnt proven he's going to start. the flashes he showed arent enough. kadary had a much better freshman year by any measurement.

Our shooting next year won't be as bad as people make it out to be, whether or not Polley comes back.

And Kadary didn't light it up, but many freshmen have shot 33% and then gone on to improve that number enough to be dangerous.

There are shooters. Cole, Gaffney, and Hawkins can all shoot. Akok and Samson might be decent enough from deep as bigs where bigs have to come out on them. Our inability to break teams down from the perimeter so we can get easier shots at the rim and from the perimeter is even more important than getting another shooter or two, though we still need 1 more shooter IMO.

It's true. Jackson's injury really hurt him there. He also couldn't keep out of foul trouble, which would have been much easier in a zone that Kadary got to play in.

Gaffney cannot be the third best shooter on next years team. That'll be a disaster.

Just when you thought you had had the full spectrum of joyful experiences as a UConn fan, the prospect of making a final four run with a prized Cuse player driven away by Boeheim comes along... I mean could it get any sweeter

He shot 36% this year. He upped his percentage 10 points. He can absolutely improve that another few percentage points. This isn't like Martin where his numbers over 3 years have been roughly flat.

Cole shot 38% from 3.

Those two are the equivalent of the 2nd and 3rd best shooters from Creighton. (Ballock & Mitchell)

Hawkins is coming in with a rep for shooting.

You'd obviously like there to be someone—or two—players up in the 40% range, but you can be a very good team with your third best shooter shooting at Gaffney's percentage.

Wait? You want us to judge players primarily by what we have seen of them on the court and only secondarily by how highly recruiting surveys thought of them when they were in high school? How outrageous!

Akok and Samson are questionable at best shooters right now. If Kadary starts then it's likely that only one of Cole/Gaffney/Hawkins starts and plays next to him.

The only quibble I have with this post is the reference to Ballock. He slumped down the stretch this season but he's absolutely a better shooter than anyone on this team - he gets picked up across half court. Didn't he shoot something like 45% as a junior?

Mitch Ballock is maybe the best shooter in the country. The 3's he takes are from 25 feet or else sprinting full speed off a screen. Very different than the 3's our guys are attempting.

We also have two good freshmen coming in at the 1-3. Add Cole and Gaffney, plus Jackson at his natural position at the 3, and maybe even Martin getting some time there, and there are not a ton of minutes to go around.

That's not to say we shouldn't take him, but if his sticking point was guaranteeing him a starting spot and major minutes, that's going to be a tough sell.

We're losing 2 players at the 2 and have 1 incoming freshman 2. We're a bit saturated at the 1, so I hope Kadary doesn't want to play point somewhere. He basically played point at Cuse.. We might be out of luck if that's the case. But he's probably most naturally a playmaking 2 at this level, and that would be an excellent addition to the roster and he would get starting minutes there for us. Cole is quite good spotting up off the ball, so it's a pretty good fit, to be hoenst.

Just saying the shooting would be pretty terrible and we'd run into the same problems where players get doubled on every drive and there isn't enough shooting to punish it.

Even if we assume Gaffney improves as a shooter, you'd also have to assume he gets enough minutes for it to matter. With Cole, Richmond, Jackson, Hawkins ahead of him, and even Diggins stealing some time, how much impact can Gaffney make? We need a shooter who stays on the floor consistently.

Also, if Whaley comes back, one of the things he'll be working hard on over the summer is 3pt shooting. I saw enough this year to predict that he'll shoot 34%+ on ~2x more volume.
