The only reason I’m responding is because I distinctly remember they used to do a full tournament preview preseason and it was literally a top __, which I believe to have been 68 specifically.

Edit: found the cover - they give a top 20 on the cover but within the pages they do a full 68 team prediction and we weren’t on it.

Kemba specifically noted that as motivation in one of those interviews about 2011.

Has anyone been to the Sally's locations outside of New Haven?

Just curious what the general consensus was because I receive frequent emails from Sally's with some excellent deals only valid outside New Haven. Makes me assume they are struggling a bit. I've been looking forward to South Windsor opening this year.

Yes. In Wethersfield.
I was not happy with the $34.00 price of their large-sized 15" white clam (add bacon) pizza but it was really tasty. The box weighed like a feather on takeout so I was Sus but I got 3 filling meals out of it.

That said those email deals they send like every other day will likely cause me to return and order some more Za's.
But things can get out of control expensive really quick if you order off the regular menu and don't partake in a special offer.
15" "Large" pizza is a joke.

I went to the Sally's in Woburn, MA a while ago and the large pizza was the same size as Pepe's 18" large but it cost 20% more.

I'm looking at the menu online for both now and I see what Sally's did. They reduced the price of the "large" since it was so high before and people were complaining but now their "large" is only 15". Pretty slimy. It's like the chip bags that they keep increasing the price on and reducing the amount of chips in the bag.

At the Pepe's up here in Chestnut Hill a 16" medium cheese pizza is $20.50. The Sally's in Woburn 15" large cheese pizza is $25.50. So for 1" less it's 24% more cost. Stupid. It's why I refuse to go to Sally's again. If I really enjoyed Sally's more than Pepe's, which I don't, then I wouldn't care about the price difference. But it's the principle that Sally's since the sale and expansion is being run by a greedy corporation.

How much is a large pie with a lot of stuff on it?

Depending on the type of pizza starting with the moz and tomato pie at 24.50 and then add your toppings. Imo, it's not worth it at all, went there about 1 month after they opened in Wethetsfield and got the 15" clam pie for 35.00. Seriously disappointed, nothing like Woosters Sally's. You do the math....

I bought 2 large pies at Frank Pepe’s in Warwick RI for my 4 person customer service branch in that town. One was just pepperoni the other combo of sausage, onions, peppers and mushrooms. The total without tip was $82 yeah 82 for 2 standard large pies, totally ridiculous. Same style pies a month earlier with customers in New Haven Pepes with salad and sodas was well under that with tip. What are they thinking?
 
What's nuts is my ex pays $24 for a Colony pie with pepperoni, sausage, stingers and hot oil. Not only is it gross (block cheese, sauce comes out of a Chef Boy-R-dee can), it doesn't even fill you up. Greasy mess. I can get a medium with one topping at Pepes that's good for 4 meals for the same price, and its a million times better
 
Ok I’m expecting to be ripped because there are a lot of pizza snobs here but here goes:
I went to Costco and ordered to go a large pepperoni at $9.95. It’s BIG and loaded with cheese and pepperoni. They cut the pieces 1/2 size what they sell by the slice in the store.
I go home put slices in the toaster oven to get it very very hot and crisp then hit it with some red pepper flakes.
I’m more than happy and you can wrap in foil the slices for the freezer and they are actually BETTER on reheat.
They only make cheese and pepperoni but you can get a cheese and just add your own toppings to get what you want. I understand the white clam would be tougher to duplicate.
For reference when I ordered a pepperoni from Pepi’s last time….I had to send a search party out to find the toppings. So $10 vs $35

Cool, you can get a Jack's or Tombstone for $3. You love grocery store pizza, most people love pizza from their favorite pizza restaurants.

You can also get Lunchables for cheaper than you can get a grinder from an excellent Italian deli.

What do they charge for store-made Whole Foods pizza in CT? Since I lost my fave place here during Covid and my 2nd fave place moved, I've been struggling to find a pizza with great crust, and honestly, right now, the Whole Foods near me does a pretty decent job. 16" for $17 (might even be $16), I get a one topping split (1/2 pepperoni, 1/2 mushroom) for $19. Reheats really well.

I might as well be in Nebraska when it comes to pizza. If I were still in CT/NY, I wouldn't be compelled to try a pizza from a grocery store.

There are good places I could drive to if I wanted to take 90 minutes or more round trip to get a pizza, but I don't.

That said, Whole Foods pizza is much, much better than Costco. Crust is firm but chewy, tasty on its own, just enough salt. Most Pittsburgh crusts resemble an Olive Garden breadstick. If one finds themselves in a pizza desert, it's worth a try (if they're using same recipe as here).

It's not my fault that standard Pittsburgh pizza sucks. Gotta make due with what's available. I'm waiting for the Brooklyn-based joint (Franks?) to open up in May/June and see if that'll solve my problem.

How is Krust Pizza in Middletown?

I'll be visiting Middletown often in the next few years since my oldest is starting at Wesleyan. I already scoped out places like Fuoco in nearby towns.

Have you been to any of the places Portnoy reviewed in Pittsburgh? He gave several places scores in the 8's and they all look better than any of the thin crust in Chicago.

The ones from his latest trip out this way are mostly east of the city, more than an hour RT for me. Lupo is in Lawrenceville, at least 45 mins RT for me. Actually first time hearing of Lupo. I've heard Davide is good. I did have Iron Born and enjoyed it, but that's Detroit style.

The ones he originally reviewed are at best average, and in a couple of cases much worse. I'd rate all of them lower than what Portnoy gave them.

I guarantee there is a much better mom and pop pizza place within a mile of that Costco. Inexcusable.
 
I got three of the new DiFara frozen pies at Shop Rite last week, on special, 3 for $10, advertised as regular price $10 each (but now are marked at $5.99 each).

I always doctor up a frozen pie with oregano, olive oil and pecorino before baking in a (well-preheated) oven. Not bad, good crust, the basil was really nice (although baked on the pie, included), would definitely buy again at a $5 price point, but not $10
