OT: Best Pizza in CT

A few months ago, our neighbor came home from work with half a pizza. She had stopped on the way home and bought a medium, ate half of it and asked if we wanted the rest. I was leery. Pizza from a restaurant that doesn't even have pizza in its name? Yeah, right. I'm not buyin' it. MY wife reminded me that I WASN'T buying it. It was a gift.
Figured even mediocre pizza is better than no Pizza, so we took it home, stuck it in the oven and sampled it a bit later. I was shocked at how good it was.
since then, I've eaten a couple Pepe's, a Zuppardi and a Modern. The Zup was the best of the bunch.
Anyway, my wife and I had to drive up Main St. Trumbull today at lunch time, and I suggested we stop at the place the our neighbor had given us the pie in the first paragraph from... Old Towne Restaurant in the Town Hall Shopping Ctr. Ordered a large thin crust with meatballs, and went home full and happy. It was literally the best pizza I've had in recent memory. If you're in the neighborhood, give it a try.

I remember Mario from like 25 or so years ago when he was manning the ovens at Bacco's in Waterbury. I would sit in the Bacco's kitchen and have slices and cream sodas with my dad. Great memories.

Loved and miss Bacco’s!

I always enjoyed seeing the 2 foot mountain of raw sausage just beyond the glass at the front counter that they’d pluck chunks from to top the pies.

I agree with this. Almost all of the neighborhood slice places in NYC are very good and consistently better than the random CT slice places. Not all of them mind you. But I’ve been very disappointed in some random CT slices. Can’t say I’ve felt the same in NYC. YMMV.

On the topic of "slices in Connecticut"
Some of the better ones I've found are Grand in Guilford and Milestone in Thomaston for New Haven style. For New York style Martino's in Oakville and Dominc and Pia in Waterbury both do a great job.

Any of y'all familiar with F&F Pizza from Brooklyn (aka "The Franks")? Asking as it appears they're going to open two locations in Pgh soon, one of which isn't all that far from me.

I lost my go-to thin crust shop during the pandemic. Wondering if this might be something to look forward to.

Yes, been there once. Brought the pizza over to Other Half Brewing. Although I ate a couple slices on the way over. It was very good. I'd imagine it'll be the best pizza you'll have near you.

Meaning I'm on the Berlin Tpke and I want a slice and there's a random place with slices. Most have been just okay. Meanwhile randomly walking through Manhattan and going into some $1.50 slice place and I've found those to be better. YMMV.

As a kid, I would devour Ocean Pizza in New London. No words for how much I loved it. Pretty certain they changed ownership in the last 20 years as I went back and while still good, was not anywhere near the same.

Yes, of course. It's impossible for a Connecticut suburban pizzeria to sell slices that are fresh. There's just not enough traffic. Where a place in Manhattan has lots of people walking by that can grab a slice.

Plenty of places have slices. Mario's in Waterbury, Pietro's in downtown Hartford, Michel Angelo's in Rocky Hill, Three Fellas in Marlborough, Giovanni's in Glastonbury come to mind. Problem is they mostly suck

I likeThree Fellas although, odd as it may sound, I find it significantly better cold than hot. Michelangelo's CAN be good but that is such a skeevy place inside and I've heard things over the years working in Rocky Hill.

From 2020.

2 Wives, Recovery Room, NY Pizza, and Fireside (under new ownership), even Illiano's are all decent in that area.

I still work down there and I used to be on the EB audit team back in the early 2000s.

Recovery Room was the best, but the other four are still pretty good.

There's also some places off the beaten path as well, such as Nino's in Uncasville. There is a Plum Tomato in Colchester and Salem. Rolling Tomato is in Groton. Wings 'n Pies on Rte. 12 (Groton) is a thicker product, but I don't know if I would call it Greek. Golden and Village on the Green (both on Rte. 12 in Preston) are definitely Greek style, if that floats your boat.

I liked Three Fellas better when it wasn't in an Atlantis gas station.

It's not bad but it used to be better before they torn down the old gas station and 7-Eleven/Three Fellas building.

I have never had a bad pizza from Michel Angelo's in Rocky Hill, though not New Haven style apizza. It is better than some of the surrounding area pizza places (including Sally's in Wethersfield). Definitely not very modern or fancy inside but not "skeevy" as you say, and you don't want to know about some of the big name resturants and what they do. You would not go out to eat then.

But it was never cheap. Astonishing what they charged compared to the other decent spots in surrounding towns

I have no complaints about Pepe's from Mohegan Sun and I have grabbed clam pies from there multiple times.

Being from the same area and agreeing on both of those choices, if you haven't tried Carbones specialty pizzas, I highly recommend them.

Yes. It is good and they offer by the slice.

I have similar experience, and I think its got to do with the style of pie. Abeetz with the char is meant to be eaten hot and right out of the oven. (and it is great).

While your typical roma style NY/NJ slice place pie is actually better after its been cooked, cooled, and reheated (as served in most slice places) There’s just some kind of magic alchemy that takes place when that type of pie sits and cools, and then gets reheated again. I lived in Bergen county NJ once, and there was a place with pies that were absolutely fantastic the next day cold out of the fridge. A whole different taste than the night before, and both were great.

Any thoughts on NL? Back in the day, Campus and Central were good. Others not. Ocean was popular w the HS crowd (near home), but it was soft and gooey.
