Her Hoops Stats Takes a Look at Off-Season Challenges for Washington Mystics

Exec. Summary:

Free agents: Elena Delle Donne (UFA), Natasha Cloud (UFA), Kristi Toliver (UFA), Tianna Hawkins (UFA), Li Meng (Reserved)

Under contract: Ariel Atkins, Brittney Sykes, Myisha Hines-Allen, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Shakira Austin, Queen Egbo

Richad Cohen goes into detail via this link:

Yup, the new General Manager will have to make a few major decisions.
  • First, I agree that the backcourt is pretty dynamic and would be even better in year 2, but......Courtney Williams is an unrestricted free agent. She had a good year, especially with the revival of her three-pt. shooting, so she could draw interest.
  • Also, super steal and very improved Allana Smith is an UFA, as well.

If one brings Williams, Smith back -- along with the return of Gardner and Izzy Harrison -- is that enough to take another step up?
Or, be mired as first-round exits?

Or....

Do you sign either Williams or Smith and spend the rest on a big contract?
  • For instance, go slightly younger and sign Jordin Canada to run with Copper and Mabrey? Or go with proven experience, such as Cloud or Diggins-Smith (who is from nearby South Bend)? And sign Smith.
  • Or, wrap up Morgan Bertsch, who is reserved and was also playing well before she was injured, and pair her with an improving Sike Kone? You could resign Williams and get someone else, to boot.

Will be interesting, for sure.
I like your thoughts here. I actually forgot about Diggins-Smith...she could really help a team take a nice jump For the Sky specifically, I feel like they need a little bit more umph and consistency in the post. I think defensively they are OK there but it felt like the guards had to carry them offensively. Between the offseason market and who ends up declaring for the draft, I agree this will be very interesting!

Sabally was named Most Improved Player yesterday, and Wilson got another Defensive Player of the Year award today.

All defensive first team Wilson, A. Thomas, Stewie, Sykes and Canada. Second team Laney, Nneka, Collier, Magbegor and E. Williams.

This is not a problem just with the WNBA, but the fact that 7/10 all defense selections are post players shows the huge gap in voters being able to evaluate perimeter defense (and the result of the league not having position requirements anymore for these teams).

I see the +/- statistic cited quite a bit. During the current game broadcast they just said Plum led the league in that stat for the season. So...she's the MVP, right? I know, not really, but thought that was interesting.

.-.
By the way, the host team and probably the favorite to win the title heading into the playoffs is in a world of trouble right now.

Stewie is in a brutal shooting slump the entire playoffs so far. 3-16, 9-25 and 7-25. Nobody stepped up to cover for her today.

Rebecca Allen never really gets talked about for the Sun, but she tormented her former team today. An efficient 18 points and a terror on defense.

78-63 final, but 41-23 in the second half. NY looked absolutely lost on offense.

23 points in the second half. Woeful! Superteam??

Waiting for Dolson to provide insight on this. Cringed after I heard her comments during the Washington series about them not playing their best. I agree with her statement, but with that roster and their experience, they shouldn't be in a position where this should be part of the discussion.

Hmm. I thought Phoenix underachieved for the most part during Brondello's tenure given their talent. Now she's coaching NY. I didn't see any kind of adjustments for the Liberty during the second half when the Sun were running away with the game. Granted the players have to execute and hit shots, but it certainly wasn't a coaching gem.

Dallas hung around in the first half, mostly due to hitting the O boards. They couldn't keep pace in the second half though. Wilson w/ 34, Young w/ a near triple double and 19 pts, Plum w/ 25. Those 2 combined for 10 made 3's.

Brown and Sims w/ 10 each off the bench was a bright spot for Dallas. Chilly shooting for Ogunbowale, Sabally and Howard.

.-.
Stewie's low shooting % is the most astonishing thing from the Liberty, 3games in a row she shot badly is rare, but I still wish They will go to the finals

She feels like more a jump shooter this year than any previous year. Might not be true but appears that way. I feel like the offense generates very few interior looks for her. If they aren’t going to utilize JJ on the block, it limits the team to reliance on the jump shot. Yesterday very few fell.

Alyssa Thomas also playing REALLY well:
19.3ppg, 9.5apg, 6rpg, 2.3spg, 53%FG through 4 games
She is but A'ja is on a whole different level. 2 30+ games out of 3. Dominating the paint on both ends of the floor. If you want a stat line, how about 28.7 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 4.0 bgp, 1.7 spg and 64% FG. She doesn't have the assists like AT, but otherwise it's a landslide in favor of Wilson.
