I heard they are deploying national guard everywhere and they were told to be prepared to be where they are deployed for up to 30 days. Wouldn't be surprised if we see a nationwide quarantine for at least 2 weeks

Because it’s way better to do that and keep hospitals slightly above capacity for a year rather than have them way over capacity for a few weeks and have the same amount of casualties. And have people go batshit crazy and commit suicide. Do you not watch the news?

not a rhetorical question - why are the first states to go on lockdown the most left-leaning states?

Because the left leaning states have the highest population density. The measures that are arguably appropriate in New York City are not needed in Kentucky. Note that left leaning states like Vermont are not on lockdown, nor should they be. There’s a reason West Virginia was the last state to have a positive case.

It should be obvious but anybody living in a multi-tenant building is more at risk than those in single family homes. And a high rise, with elevators and interior hallways is a greater risk than other types of apartments.

My dad has been taking the train to NYC every day for work (he works in construction) and is still working next week even with the shutdown

Fortunately I work from home, but my company is sending out crews to 4 or 5 different large job sites in NYC tomorrow that are all still up and running. Crazy. NY developers just don't care. Savage. So much for a "lockdown".

NYC is certainly becoming an outlier. I would think there would be some correlation between Chicago and NYC since they both have massive public transportation systems and close contact. California definitely relies more in freeway system and less on subways and busses.
Texas and Florida are both more populated than New York state yet have fewer cases and have taken less drastic steps.
Only thing I do know is there will be a treasure chest of information to analyze effects of choices during this pandemic.

LA is huge but it is mostly single family and exterior access apartments. Same with the cities in Texas. San Francisco has more interior access apartments and is more dense, like Chicago and New York. Seattle too.

It is also inflationary to keep printing money and foisting it on others so some day the reckoning will come to us and our children if we do not address this.

And from a public health and safety standpoint, it's why we really shouldn't be considering prescribing hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin to any person who has a spectrum of syndromes that might be COVID-19.

Although these drugs are reasonably well-tolerated, they can potentially cause serious adverse effects in some patients. Exposing multiple millions of patients to them (some unnecessarily), will result in a quantifiable # of inadvertent hospitalizations and deaths due to adverse effects of these drugs (collateral damage, so to speak, of the pandemic).

There are a lot worse collateral damage events going on. Tufts New England Medical is giving those drugs to all, but is also doing it in part to get data on efficacy. If there are side effects, so be it. We don’t have time to do a long term controlled study.

Every day that we keep our economy shut down we destroy the lives and livelihoods of tens of thousands. We cannot continue that for much longer. Certainly not for three months let alone 18. We have two options, we find a treatment or we let it run and people will die. All we are doing at the moment is buying a little time for option 1.

I live here in rural western North Carolina...we have five positives in my county.

Interestingly, three of the five are quarantined here but are New York primary home residents so they count in the New York stats...the other two are the folks that they were visiting.

The numbers are getting so bad in NYC - from talking to people there most young people are still pretty dismissive - but if it gets much worse - I worry that the NYC folk will panic and scatter and infect everyone else and this will take forever to contain.

Yep, they're all moving into their summer houses in Litchfield County. My buddy said they've moved back to unfinished houses they own and are having builders work around them likely spreading the virus if they caught it in the city.

I got out of the city last Tuesday - think I'm ok. Wasn't really worried but spent the prior week in DC and the week before in Tampa (so have been on planes and trains (and automobiles)). So I'm 5 days completely clear of NYC. (Feels like a LOT longer)

It's "so bad" because you have 8 million people living in somewhat close proximity and are actually testing people. West Virigina had 0 cases a week ago because they didnt test anyone. Likely tons of people have it that havent been tested yet or never will all across the country.
