UConn to Big XII Imminent?

If past experience is any indicator, then you can book ECU to the Big 12.
I’d think they would take WAZZU to grab a great market and strengthen the Northwest with BYU.

So who leaks this and why? That kind of stuff always interests me.
Why would the Big12 leak it? If the Thamel take is close to accurate I can't see why they would.
which means it's coming from the UConn side. Why would they leak it other than to give one last chance for the ACC to come to the table with a reasonable offer that is not an SMU offer.

It tells me the relationships have legs even though the last expansion didn't go our way. My hope is that Yormark wouldn't open this up again without a high degree of confidence he has things lined up. It would be unprofessional at this point. There's no vetting left to be done. It's about value and the future direction of the B12. And the Northeast esp. CT seems to have reversed the outmigration trend.
ESPN hasn’t been kind to UConn in the past but if they support it then I imagine the hold outs will be ok with adding UConn.

IF this turns out to be a realistic option then I will be first in line to congratulate Zanetto. Saying the deal was "imminent" was a pretty strong, no, an uber statement around here, so anything less than an invitation doesn't fly straight.

I was hoping for an ACC collapse but now I'm hoping it survives with or without FSU. If the ACC programs are locked in, UConn's chances for the Big 12 are better. UConn and any number of other programs would be awesome. SDSU would be great even though the Corner 4 really boosted the western flank. UConn, USF, Temple, Memphis would really help the East and I know, crazy.

Adding UConn isn't gonna stop the B12 from getting the ACC leftovers. We are in a completely new market, that is our appeal. There's no real reason not to, it actually may be beneficial to prevent the ACC from taking us

Rumor from armchair AD on twitter is that is a package with Gonzaga

Been out of the country for a week and saw this news pop up on my Fox61 app. Sooooo... should I assume the position now for the nutsack crush when the real news drops that New Mexico gets the invite? This feesl different this time, but we've been so effed time and again with CR.

I can't even, this would be so huge. UConn needs to get in now, and then the Big 12 can savor the ACC carcass should that come to pass. Cinci, WVU, UCF, perhaps Pitt, Louisville, Va Tech, NC State. Who knows.

The Big 12 could also have a hoops scheduling agreement with the Big East to help out our brethren. This must happen. We can't get completely stymied 2 years in a row.

The ACC seems pretty locked down and the FSU public tantrum strategy seems to have backfired with low interest from the P2. Strengthening the B12 now puts them in a better position to get whatever ACC teams they want down the road with a stronger bargaining position. I think Yormark sees the B12 as the future P3 league. He's probably right. We have a strong athletic department overall and a beautiful campus. Championship basketball, and improved football with an on campus atmosphere only helps them.

It won’t be cut rate.

If we got 15.5 per year (half of the new b12 contract) for basketball only, that would be a major home run vs our current 6-8 in the BE.
Isn't 20% the going rate for a basketball only?

Maybe for a no name but this is UConn basketball and right now it is the at the height of the game. I'm sure we won't go if we don't get at least 12-15 Million per year until football joins.

Keep in mind that our addition and travel cost is probably going be $2 million. The new big east deal is $6.5 million so you have to figure $8.5 million is breakeven.

I think Notre Dame only gets 20% from the ACC, for what it's worth.

Yeah that is why I think we are aiming for 12-15 million. This could be the sticking point on us joining right now. I wonder if this was the issue last time they approached us too about the money. I'm sure the big 12 just wanted our basketball but were probably trying to low ball us last time. Now they see how valuable the UConn brand is and are trying to raise the price and give us a bone for our football program. It will be interesting to see where we end up.

Cracking Up Lol GIF

Can we get a status check?

So is the significant investment an on campus stadium? I don't really know what else we can invest more in...we have a really.good.indoor training facility, we have a well known head coach who we pay decently. We had a huge NIL increase this year..... so the only lack of investment is the Rent?? Not sure if that's it....

I'd be damn happy with that. The Rent cost us what $90 million over 20 years ago. Keep it for 6 more years and that's only $3 million/year. Then let high schools use it. Or if people insist on calling East Hartford home, then invest in a high tech new stadium which is used year round for other purposes too. Invest.

Wondering if the B1G even raised their eyebrows at this UConn to B12 talk? Wouldn’t it be interesting if Dave got a call from ol l KM l

According to the NYT story, ESPN would add money to the Big 12 media deal and the addition of UConn would be revenue neutral to the other schools.

"The Big 12 is a year away from beginning a new six-year deal with ESPN and Fox that will pay its members an average of $31.7 million per school. The deal was agreed to before the former Pac-12 schools’ additions, but ESPN was required to pay a pro-rata share to the four Power 5 members. UConn, however, would not be guaranteed the same deal.

ESPN has previously considered adding more money to the Big 12’s television deal, according to broadcasting sources briefed on the talks. ESPN is located in Bristol, Conn., just 40 miles from Storrs.

Current members have been told UConn’s addition would be “budget-neutral” and would not reduce conference revenue payouts to existing members, according to multiple Big 12 administrators."

I don't see how UConn could guarantee that to the Big 12.
