Theories on why Gaithings would be bailing on us for Western friggin Michigan?
My theory is that a good number of these are the result of a guy going to the Coach saying I want more PT/targets/whatever and Coach saying I don’t see that happening. Sometimes it’s Coach going to player and saying “you might have better opportunities elsewhere.” I think that is behind many if not most of these moves. A few are about $ but mostly at the highest levels. MAC teams aren’t paying huge premiums for #2-3 receivers from UConn. FCS schools aren’t doing it for #4 quarterbacks.

QB Caleb Smith:

Our QB room must be really solid or the incoming frosh QB is impressive to lose two QBs this close to the end of Spring ball. Or there is an incoming portal announcement that caused the staff to let these two know that finding a new home might be in their best interests?

Who was this?

Looks like this was just a trimming of the QB room with this move. Didn't recall who he was and clearly him being a PWO shows why. I still think there's going to be an incoming QB from the portal.

Caleb Smith was a walk-on. And honestly, wouldn't surprise me if we don't take a portal QB. Even with Welliver gone, we have four scholarship QBs.

I'm not saying they won't take a QB from the portal, but I think 4 scholarship QBs (with 1 or 2 walkon QBs) is enough in the portal era. Why? You don't have to develop QBs on your roster for the next season as you can go into the portal and find an experienced QB.

Terribly written article so I don't know if they added us in error or they got the conference affiliations wrong...

So take with a grain of salt (and a lime and tequila)

But he is a QB

That's some chatGpt quality . And he's been discussed in the drew pyne thread.

I disagree on not needing to develop QBs. I think develop in terms of young frosh to next level is a thing of the past. However, I think there is something to be said about bringing in a QB through the portal with the intent of having them possibly start but definitely learn the system and by year two be all systems go. JF is done after this year and we still don't know what we have with Evers. We might not know if JF stays healthy, God willing, and stays effective. So I think you can still bring in a QB from the portal to compete but let them know they might need to acclimate to the offense.

I don't think we'll see a portal QB that will slot right in as a Day one starter. But I can see us grab one that could compete and maybe start next year.

The economics of paying QBs recruiting change the thinking. Remember, you pay QB1 a certain amount, QB2 gets less, and then there is little for QB3 and QB4 gets almost nothing. So, you can bring in a freshman QB and develop him, but that's about it.

I think for QBs the idea of sticking around is a bit hollow knowing a guy in the portal that had a bit of playing time and more pedigree might shiv you out of a spot just as it's your turn to get a chance is going to be annoying. Especially if you are confident in your talents

I think we are a good 10 years before a new stable pattern creates itself.

Unless there is regulation, the only way stability will happen is if UConn forces their way into the top ranks of P4. And even then what we knew as stability will probably not materialize.
