Some thoughts on Depaul Game (merged)

I’m in Las Vegas for a graduation tomorrow. Out on the town, didn’t see the game. UConn won as expected, but it sounds like DePaul made a game of it in the 2nd half. Can’t comment on the game until I watch a replay.

This isn't a complaint, but can anyone explain why Geno is benching Aubrey Griffin? Since her coming- out game, her minutes have been severely limited. And when she does play, she brings energy & effort.
and many of those minutes are going to Irwin, who's is a great kid, but don't see them beating the better teams with her playing all those minutes. Griffin needs oh so much work to get comfortable. she was so aggressive , especially at Seton Hall, but kinda looks now like Walker her first year. Even as raw as she is, her skill set dwarfs Kyla's, but she needs lots of minutes.

I continue to be impressed by Anna. She had some TO's but is playing with confidence. Her TO's come from agressive play. And she is quite a good rebounder. Also, Geno has her handle the throwins like Lou did.

Granddaughter at UNLV?

Oregon State fans have a lot of respect for what UConn has done for the game of women's college basketball. I think that there are some posters on this forum who have been trying to start a feud between the two fan bases.

Knowledgeable fans can't ignore the sustained success that UConn has put together over the past two decades. Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck has long been a fan of the high bar that UConn has established.

I was so entertained by this game. The first half was more about us getting hot from 3, Dangerfield especially and Depaul being ice cold.

Then in the second half, DePaul got hot. That last shot at the buzzer over Bent was incredible. They had the crowd, they had the swagger, the aggression, but our girl’s didn’t fold. They would just go down and answer with a high percentage two. Then get back on defense and force DePaul to make another crazy shot.

Was it closer then it should be Yes, but man I saw confidence in the themselves that had been missing the last couple final fours
Absolutely fun to watch! More entertaining than a 50 point blowout. Love the fight in these young ladies!

 Wait a second here. You are @Carnac, you are supposed to know what happened in the game BEFORE it is played.

Carnac is in Vegas. The casinos could take a major hit from the all knowing visitor from the East.

What peed me of the most was in the 3rd quarter instead of tossing the ball in the paint to Liv, we hiked up 6 missed 3's. They could not guard her without fouling and she was automatic. Depaul would have had at least 2 players if not 3 foul out of the game if the refs had called them on the holds on Liv just half of the time, I think they only called 2 all night.Head bang
Icouldn’agree more.Just rewatched and I saw even more grabbing and foulingOno

Yes, can't agree more. Depaul has 5 fouls already in 3Q. Geno should keep going inside and let Depaul to foul Megan of Liv.

Some really tough games before that can happen. Baylor, Oregon, USC.
That’s what we live for. That’s why the players wanna play here. If Rueck is such a fan maybe he should follow suit and stop munching on Liberty, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, etc. Then maybe players like Russell, Westbrook, Van Lith, et al, might think about staying home.

DePaul has HEART in Spades...They came back strong...

We are still looking for ours...One team fought for every rebound, loose ball and defended all out...It wasn’t us...

Win is a win...but team needs to toughen up, it can’t be just Megan and Crystal with toughness...
I believe Geno reigned them in again in the third quarter. They were blowing DePaul out and if they had continued to, they would have scored over 100 points and I don't think Geno wanted that. UConn did not continue to push the ball like they did in the first half. UConn scored almost 30 points in the first quarter and scored barely more than that in the entire second half. In the first half, UConn out rebounded DePaul big time and defended all out. Did you watch only the second half? UConn still scored 84 points with the slow down and numerous turnovers.

I though Anna played well, except for that boneheaded out of bounds play

I wouldn't be surprised if that move she made is legal in Europa rules.
[/QUOTE]

No. Definitely not legal in international play. She clearly just forgot that there hadn’t just been a made basket.

It was 55-29 at the half. Over the next 13 minutes, UConn was outscored 37-15. I don't care if Geno was reining them in with Wonder Woman's magic lasso. The defense has to be good enough to not give up 3 points per minute to anyone.

Second that. The way she is playing right now, she is getting way too many minutes. Makurat and Griffin at present bring more to the table. Let’s hope that changes.
I think the whole team looked tired in the second half. Not enough depth off the bench. It’s tough playing the starters all the minutes. CW in particular I thought looked slow tonight. She played to much bb over the summer and didn’t give her body enough rest. Just my opinion. Can someone tell me where Kayla and Molly were rated by ESPN coming out of high school? Were they even in the top 100.

Not gameplay related but loved listening to Monica Mcnutt announcing. Brings good energy and her oatmeal comment made me lol. You could tell she has a good time doing her job.
Yeah, well before the game she was pretty clear how this was DePaul big chance for an upset. During the game about 3 or 4 times she said, and I paraphrase, how much she would like to see DePaul cut the lead, even this game up and ultimately (I assume) win the game. I hadn't heard that kind of homer rooting since Carolyn Peck. I'll take Doris Burke's didactic approach any day. More than once I wanted Eric Frede to grab the mike and shut her up.

I am not sure if any of the Uconn turnovers were forced turnovers. I think all, or nearly all, TO's were unforced.
This to me is one of the greatest contrasts with the "classic" UConn team. UConn has always thrived on creating turnovers that lead to transition buckets and scoring runs. When was the last time a UConn opponent had only 7 turnovers?
