QB Cole Welliver enters Transfer Portal

My guess is that Mora thought that Evers had a much higher ceiling and was force feeding his development. After UAB it was impossible to ignore the effect that Fagnano had on the offense.

Nothing wrong with that approach. But it proved to be incorrect (at least in the short term).

There was quite a bit wrong with the approach because it was obvious to almost all who was better. In fact it got kinda awkward. The UAB game presented a nice bail out point though.

On the other hand it’s possible that Mora looked at the quality of the opponents and figured it didn’t matter much who started. Which in retrospect was more right than wrong. I wish Fagnano started against Maryland, Duke and Wake.

I think we would have won at least one more if not two more games.

Guys in the portal usually announce every offer they get on Twitter. It’s a free way to show they are in demand.
Not disagreeing with you or How Sway. Just saying it could be a reason people assume he’s Rhody bound.

I’ve no idea what you’re issues are, but post moras quote you’re holding onto

Whoa

You were the one who jumped in on my post trying to be a smart a##. Now, you have the issue because you look like the fool and won't give it up

I'm not holding on to anything, if you are here posting on the football board you know all about it, go find the press conference when he named Evers the starter. But again I am sure you already know this. You were too eager to take what you thought was a clever cheap shot rather than think it through

Don’t remember ever hearing Mora say Evers was starting because of NIL.

He didn't say it exactly, but he definitely said there is lots of pressure to play the top NIL guys on the roster. Given the context of the conversation, it was pretty evident what he didn't say.
Yep. He absolutely indicated that he had to play. He basically said, “you can’t take money to buy players and then not play the players that they paid for.”

-> "You go get Nick Evers, you're hoping he becomes the guy," Mora said. "You're cheering them all, you're pushing them all, you're coaching the heck out of all of them but you're hoping deep down you made the right decision and he can solidify the room." <-

He was asked a question in the pre game/ pre season press conference specifically about naming Evers the starter

He did not say anything about Evers beating the competition. He immediately explained when you go get a player in the portal with NIL, the intention is for him to be that guy

Similar to Aiden at point guard for Hurley. Part is you want to see what you thought when recruiting and then all things being mostly even you pick your guy (Aiden/Nick) and see where it goes. Both coaches waited a little too long to make switch (says the guy not making millions to make these decisions).

That is what I was referring to.

Totally agree. But he wasn't stubborn and made the switch. And we ended the season on the highest high that was realistically achievable, imo. The entire thing was handled like a pro.

Hindsight is 20/20,,,,,but seeing the way the season ended, if Fagnano had been getting tue snaps as #1 throughout Fall camp and was starter from game #1........UConn ends up with two more wins.

Agree. Sitting at the Duke game, the discussion among us was whether Mora would switch to Fagnano at the half. Evers wasn’t moving the team—in a game we were competing hard enough to win. Our consensus was that Mora would make the move (which he should have), but a Duke fan who was listening, and who agreed that Evers play was hurting our chances, shook his head saying “it won’t happen. If Mora pulls him it will send a bad message to potential portal guys. These guys getting paid expect the playing time to showcase their talent. With an eye toward preserving his reputation for the long haul, Mora will have to stick with him”
And he did. And we blew a game we had every reason to win.

Yeah, I just did not see it with Evers. Hopefully he improves drastically for this year. The Duke game was not a good game for Evers, but he made several good plays. But there were many games where he was lousy and you could see the WRs such as Bell and Sheffield getting frustrated.
The UAB game was very telling. If Evers does not get hurt, he would've continued to play and UConn would have lost that game. I don't wish any player to get injured or hurt, and never would, but having said that his injury helped UConn that game because the offense ran much better with Fagnano.

This board was upset that they let Tyler Phommachanh walk. He’s struggling to play at DII Post.
Not sure what happened there but he sure did deliver some excitement his fresh year with us. For once a QB that could extend plays and make his own opportunities.

Two types of portal players. Those who want $$$ and those who want exposure. And there's the full spectrum in between.

For me, if I'm the coach, I'll give the $$$ player a chance, but they have to perform. And if I were the coach, I'd fall on my sword to a donor saying I screwed up on the evaluation if a kid is getting $$$ but isn't helping the team win.
No school will be perfect with NIL, just like no school was perfect on recruiting before NIL. The difference is before NIL, recruiting misses were an accounting task with university money. Now, you're spending a booster's money.

Funny how everyone loves Fagnano now. Short memories of what people said on this board. Who's our backup QB now? I see we lost the 2023 CT Player of the Year to the portal. It's so hard to stay connected to college sports now when the rosters are constantly in flux.

Add to that the Wake game. I was dying of frustration in that one.

People can value things as they wish but I am not about to place too much stock in how anyone performed against Merrimack unless we one day reach the point where all of our opponents will be similar to Merrimack.

If that does happen, I'm pretty confident that we will have already been at least a year or two beyond the day I stopped attending our football games.
