OT: Mayweather vs. McGregor

Has boxing changed that much in the last decade or so? I mean, this was pattycake. Lame. Granted, I haven't watched in a very long time, but it is very different than the boxing I remember. This isn't a knock on McGregor, who shouldn't have been in that ring at all, but more Mayweather. I know he's 40. Well, he looked it. Wow. Bring back the old days.

You answered your own question. MMA fighter versus a 40 year old coming off a 2 year layoff. I was pleasantry surprised with the competition.

That was fun.

Obviously Mayweather isn't close to what he was. He let a guy who'd never boxed before hang in there for almost 10 rounds.

But it was entertaining and we actually got to see Mayweather punch someone for once. And I didn't pay for it.

Hats off to McGregor for hanging in there. I kinda wanted to see Mayweather put him down but I guess it's the ref's job to prevent that when a guy is taking shot after shot.

So my question for more seasoned boxing fans - did Mayweather look washed? Does McGregor look like he could hang with an upper tier prime fighter? He definitely surprised me in the early rounds but I do realize that it can be difficult to distinguish clean hits. His compubox stats were better than I expected but clearly not impressive.

Yeah I'm not sure anyone could have reasonably expected better. Conor looked pretty competent for 3 rounds and then became clear his conditioning was an issue when he wasn't able to get anything on his punches after that. Floyd was able to walk him down and land more and more as the fight went on. Floyd just didn't have the legs anymore to more efficiently cut him off to finish the fight sooner.

Mayweather is done. Legs gone. GGG or Canelo might kill McGregor, as would Keith Thurman, Erol Spence and any young fighter in his prime.

But hey they just made about a combined 500 million

Periscope coming through with the fight for free. I feel like they allowed it. Most of the time you need to hop around feeds. There was 100 k on the feed I was on.

This result worked out for both fighters. I wish McGregor would have kicked Floyd in the head though to end it.

.-.
The way they embraced at the end pretty much confirms to me that these guys never actually disliked each other. They both rode an amazing marketing wave all the way to the bank and this was more show than competition. Don't get me wrong, it was a good fight, but at the end of the day I think these two dudes realize that neither is a threat to the other.

He was as powerful or fast as when he was young no doubt. He wasn't moving his feet much at all. He's 40 and hasn't competed in 2 years. Enough said, really.

I think Canelo or GGG would annihilate him. Particularly now with some tape so they could learn his tendencies without having to feel him out the first few rounds. GGG in particular would get a nasty right hand KO. Any number of the 25 plus power shots from a prime fighter would knock him out.

Still insanely impressed with Connor. I'd love to see him revolutionize the way UFC fighters are paid when he goes back there. Those guys get jipped

This was an old Floyd Mayweather carefully pulling the legs off of an ant. A very, very brave ant.

No, McGregor can't hang with good boxers. But he didn't embarrass himself. He can go back to UFC or sit on a beach for the rest of his life with his rep intact. But there's no way he should think about getting in with a guys like Canelo. They won't be playing.

Floyd should put some of this money in the bank so he doesn't have to try this again in two years. Time is a -er and he isn't beating it.

If they fight again, Floyd stops him in 6 or less.

Colin has nothing of which to be ashamed. Entertaining exhibition. This wasn't as close as history will remember it. But it was fun and both men were great partners in promoting it.

McGregor looked better than expected, Mayweather looked old and finished. Pretty good fight but didn't really like seeing that version of Floyd. Early stoppage from the ref but McGregor was done.

Like I said, I haven't watched a boxing match in a long time. So... I found it hard to watch.

I felt like, if it's going be a geriatric fighting an unskilled guy, then just brawl. Let it all out in one round.

I did expect more, I admit it.

Remember, Roberto Duran was a middleweight champ at that age. Leonard fought Camacho for 6 rounds of all out punching.

.-.
I think one of the reasons Floyd started slow was simply from Conor extending his right hand so far out to block the jab. I can't remember anyone else ever doing that to Floyd, but simply holding the arm out that far drains stamina.

Not really early. Conor was stumbling around, being hit and visibly hurt by clean shots, and hadn't thrown a punch himself in close to a minute.

If Mayweather needs another fight to pay the bills, and McGregor insists it be MMA, not boxing, it'll gross more money, and likely have a far different outcome.

It was really great work by the ref. Floyd was loading up a left hook right when the ref stepped in. He possibly stopped the fight one punch before McGregor would be layed out. He did miss 4 of the previous 5 power shots (after the pummeling immediately before) but the next one connect looked to be the final blow. Not only was Conor not punching, he wasn't even really defending.

Yea but there is less than 0 percent of this happening. Floyd has managed to escape a GOAT type career unscathed. He is not going to subject himself to more punishment in 25 minutes than he endured in the 50 previous fights. It would be flat out dangerous.

So much better than I thought. Unsure if Mayweather was toying with him early. Planted the idea that maybe kinda sorta McGregor could win if his conditioning was on the same level. Haven't looked at Twitter or any outside takes on this. Once again, much better than I could have ever expected. I am curious if the difference between their endurance level is nurture or nature. Thinking about getting outclassed by a 40 year old when I am 29 is kinda sad. Obviously Floyd is on another plane. Came into the fight thinking Floyd in 5, no chance he could ever lose unless it was fixed.

Mayweather, if he needed it, could make a huge boxing payday happen tomorrow.

He has no further need or use for McGregor.

He's done, that was a shell of what he used to be.

McGregor would absolutely destroy him in an MMA fight, Mayweather isn't stupid.
Difference is size was stunning. McGregor was basically a light heavyweight in there, and yet Floyd walked him down all night and walked through his punches. Floyd didn't have a mark on his face after. McGregors one punch power is a ufc myth.

He would kill Floyd in an mma fight no doubt, but this should stop all talk of a fighters going over to boxing and winning.

It would have been funny, but the contract structured that McGregor would lose his entire take if that happened. Not only that, but Floyd could probably sue the crap out of him

Jose Aldo?

He's done, that was a shell of what he used to be.

It did have some Jordan-on-the-Wizards vibes to it, but this was essentially an exhibition and so I think it's possible to overstate his decline when a boxer becomes more of a performer. He could be beat, no question, but I'm not ready to go all transitive property here like everyone else (not saying you). I don't necessarily think he's as vulnerable to having the lights turned out by a young riser as it might appear.

Jose Aldo?
Doesn't that speak more mma guys in abilities to take shots? He was 20lbs heavier and got walked down all night. Floyd ate his shots, smiled, and walked forward ALL NIGHT. McGregor fought well but there was huge difference in the snap of the two guys punches.

Oh without a doubt, if Mayweather stood behind McGregor you wouldn't see any of him, McGregor's back was way bigger but nothing he threw hurt Floyd one bit. Mayweather looked so much slower and less crisp than what we're used to. He changed up his style and walked McGregor down because nothing Conor threw could hurt him. Just wait until Conor tired out threw some stuff together and the fight was over.

McGregor looked less out of place than I thought he would and Floyd looked older than I thought he would. It makes sense for Floyd because he's 49 and hasn't fought in 2 years but he's so good you think he could hop off the couch and look otherworldly. I have no interest in ever seeing him fight again.

I'd love to see Mayweather at least acknowledge McGregor did far better in boxing than he would in MMA. Unless McGregor seriously needed the money, he deserves great credit for taking on the challenge. There aren't many top boxers who would do the same.
