He's quoted now as saying likely visiting Arkansas in September so probably changed.
and he's visting other schools. not time to say he's not coming here, but he's not a lock yet

Subscription article. But you can read some of it.

"It was a great visit and I feel it could be a good spot for me," Thomas said on Connecticut. "Coach Hurley feels like I am one of the best players in my class and so do I. He feels my style of play matches the way he coaches. When I was on the visit, it felt like everything was clicking. His personality matched mine when it came to many things. He feels I fit his style more than most players he recruits. I enjoyed my time there. Everything was welcoming."

.-.
Would imagine Auburn and Bama are not looking good based on this quote

A rare case where a UConn football game might sell him on UConn more than a Bama or Auburn football game would sell him on them. "Thanks for taking me to Rentschler Field, you've really proved to me that UConn is a basketball school."

and barely. I am now shutting of the darn podcast the second he mentions the yawns. If you have to yawn, fine. But I dont need to know about it. Its not professional. Its crude. And this dude unofficially represents our university. Drives me crazy.

a potential '25 starting lineup featuring Mahaney / Thomas / Ball is obviously super talented but my one concern is that it's pretty small, especially compared to our last two lineups:
Newton / Hawk / AJ
Newton / Spencer / Castle

Well, Nova won two titles with 3 superlative small guards not long ago.

All 3 guys are listed at 6'3 so wouldn't be concerned at all about the size of that potential lineup

not really
2018: Brunson (6'3) / Booth (6'3) / Bridges (6'6)
2016: Brunson (6'3) / Arcidiacono (6'3) / Hart (6'5)

but that's pretty small compared to our last two chip teams. they are a combined 6" shorter than last year (6'5, 6'4, 6'6) and 7" shorter than the year before (6'5, 6'5, 6'7). we smothered purdue's three guards with our size.

Well luckily there's not a rule saying we have to follow the same exact formula if we want to win a championship. I don't even know what to make of a cumulative height comparison anyway. Baylor won a championship starting guards that were 6'2, 6'3, and 6'4.

And if there's any matchups where it was causing an issue we'd have a ton of depth on the wings to just swap one of those guys out. I don't really understand where this concern is coming from

We won with Bazz & Boat AND that was against guards with size. I also think Thomas is more than 6'3 and Ball has huge hops anyway. Thomas is listed as 6'4 on 24/7 and I have seen 6'5 elsewhere.

it's a worthy enough observation for a uconn mbb message board in the middle of july. but apologies, i'm always striving to up my message board game.

Fair enough, I'm just not sure what outcome you're hoping for here. Stop recruiting the 5* top 10 player in Meleek Thomas? Force one of our returning guys into the portal?

Thomas is probably similar to Newton in size… Mahaney isn’t tiny. Ball is a monster and a freak athlete.

I have no issue with the topic, but not at all concerned.
Exactly. Newton was a very good rebounder for a guard. He’s taller than Thomas but Thomas likely has an edge with hops and overall athleticism.

i want thomas and a wing like Mullins. i dont think we need another PG/CG like lewis especially since we'll still have Mahany and Nowell. (plus a stretch 4 and a 5)

That's fair, I agree that 2 wings like Thomas and Mullins would be preferable. But I definitely want Lewis or another PG, I think we should be taking a PG every year and always have at least 3 on the roster

diarra and samson are gone after this season and hopefully Karaban, Liam, and Stew all get drafted 1st round after we 3peat. if everyone else returns our 2025 depth chart would look like this:

Mahaney / Nowell / ???
Ball / ???
??? / Ross
??? / Abraham
Reed / ??? / Singare

we'd need to bring in at least 5 guys so I think the priorities should be:
1) Starting W- Thomas
2) Starting stretch 4- Ament / Bundalo
3) Backup W- Mullins / Adams
4) Backup C- Cenac / Reibe
5) 3rd string PG- Lewis

we'll prob have to fill 1 or 2 of these needs via the portal

Agreed. I don’t like the idea of recruiting over Nowell. I can support the idea of a solid veteran portal PG for more depth but I think recruiting over your own guys with high end 5 star one and done types is exactly the formula that’s held Kentucky and Duke back in recent years from winning.

I wouldn't worry about their size. It's entirely possible Mahaney or Ball goes pro. Someone transfers. WAYYYY too many variables to worry about it now. At this stage, we amass as much talent as we can that fits our culture. When the portal opens next spring is when we'll start marking moves to fill in skill/position gaps.

I think it’s fair to be concerned about the size of a Nowell/Mahaney/Thomas starting backcourt. But the scoring upside is tantalizing, and Nowell/Thomas are too quick and physically gifted in different ways, to be negative defenders after working with our staff.

How is it recruiting over? More like recruiting a backup and understudy for Nowell.

Recruiting over is bringing in Aidan Mahaney to get minutes ahead of Hassan Diarra.

I stopped listening. Representing UConn basketball, yawns, butchers players names regularly, and because he's forced to podcast every day, in the off-season, there's mostly speculation and random what if scenarios presented as fact that l than actual news.
