Maryland now is a "powerhouse"

So does making it to the Elite 8 and getting blown out make you a powerhouse? WCBB is in a sad, sad state of affairs if that is the case...

.

Maryland IS a powerhouse...

Nice pics in this thread!

What's the over/under on margin of victory? 20-25?

I don't like being overconfident, but Maryland got shellacked by Notre Dame on a neutral court, and I have every expectation that UConn will be better than ND last year. Add to that the fact the game will be in CT, and it's hard for me to picture it being close. ACC teams do not have a recent history of enjoying their sojourns in the Nutmeg State.

Are you being LAX?

On the men's side, they have some of the whiney-est fans. Not sure if their WCBB fans are the same ...
Can't judge a fan base by a few members - but -

when RU returned the Jimmy V game of a few years ago (we had beaten them at our house, the year Brenda was pregnant), a group of their fans sat in the courside media seats next to our bench holding up signs about revenge and saying some really vile things, slurs on our player's names, etc. They were "chased" at game time to their real seats. Sadly, Maryland actually played defense and they beat us.

I think thats the conservative margin of victory point spread! It all depends on how much of a beat down Geno will allow.

Maryland students have been called out for their lack of class before:

University of Maryland sports fans urged to clean up behavior (2004)

Some haven't believed me when I described the behavior I saw from MD fans first hand as I sat behind their bench at Penn State. Vulgar doesn't begin to describe it.

Oh, they can be really vile. It's mostly students, too, though I suppose they deserve a point or two for sheer loyalty; sometimes they show up to volleyball games.

come on, you have to consider the source - its a press release from maryland! pathetic to say powerhouse for sure when compared to Uconn and some others. basically i agree with all the comments on this one, funny pictures also. maryland has better (more athletic) players coming into the program now and next years look really good, most play defense too! now i know you'll say brenda will wreck that or something but better showings are on the way for maryland. we will get killed by Uconn this year and probably next year also - i would not have scheduled the games. but do you give maryland any credit for giving it the ole college try? hate us if you want but we hate duke. we all have our punching bags.

FIRST FOUR MINUTES after we start like we did against Duke two years ago.

This isn't true hate. I have much more animosity towards Notre Dame. If Maryland turned this into a true rivalry I would love it, but I just don't think it's going to happen.

Maryland hasn't done itself any favor by having a relatively weak schedule to get ready for UConn. Nebraska is the only quality team prior to playing UConn and who knows how strong they will actually be. It will be interesting to take a look at UConn's schedule to see if its any stronger before they play each other.
They play December 3 - about a month or so into the season - both teams should be about 7-0 or so depending on how many games they have played. ESPN - "Two undefeated powerhouses face off..." blah blah. It will be interesting to see how the game is advertised. Still, give Brenda credit for stepping up to play UCONN. I still think we destroy them, and look forward to it.

Eric we will dimantle them. They wont know what hit them. Uconn is that much better and MD wont be the only team we do that too. Its going to happen to alot of teams over the next couple of years. Geno continues to set the bar at a higher level, that only he has been able to reach and break. If we get two good ball handleing guards and in 2/3 years two great post players this thing we call UConn WBB just may break alot more records. The only question is when will this program peak. I thought it might have when we broke the win streak. Now looking at our roster we may be on track to break that streak too.

I'm not familiar with the bad blood toward Maryland. Was there an event that led to the dislike of Maryland? Was there some sort of recruiting battle that got ugly?

No, this is the end of the first half!!!!!!!
I thought it was when the UConn starting lineup was introduced. :D

Something like when Tina and Maya took the floor together: The opposing team thought "Uh-oh, we're going to get killed." And they did.

I think we'll win.

I think we'll win by a decent margin.

I think some of the comments are hilarious....but, if we continue the one-upmanship, we are in danger of not ridiculing MD, but ourselves.

There is no viciousness behind the jokes. Unlike threads that mock other teams (like Tennessee), this thread is very lighthearted.

I agree. I just hope we can keep it that way.

You don't see that kind of fan behavior too often at wcbb games, but Maryland does seem to have a national reputation for acting like idiots. These are students you're talking about, right?

Um, NO. Folks that advertised themselves as a "fan" club. We - the RU fans - were seated in the couple of rows behind the bench, I felt very sorry for our players, the comments - many personal - were quite nasty. And I couldn't figure out what the "revenge" and "payback" signs were for - Rutgers doesn't have a [since the mid-'90's] history with Maryland, sure we won the year before, but you need to take "revenge" and "payback" on an OOC team that beats you?

Incidently, pre-Brenda, we played Maryland when Chris Weller was still the coach, in Cole Fieldhouse, and the fans were very polite, showing us the plans and site for the new arena, etc.

And I agree that the vast majority of women's fans, especially adult ones, don't behave that way. But every fan base has them - I previously posted (IIRC) about the idiot from Cal at the Women's College World Series that kept running up to the edge of the stands, primarily abusing the umpire but also making a comment about a player that got injured "deserving" it. He survived one day, the second the ushers had the police eject him. And I made the mistake of attending the NIT semi-finals at MSG the year Rutgers Men made it, and way, way, way too much testosterone is a polite way to put it. Since I only attend women's sports (and football, well back in the stands) I was appalled at what fans from all teams were yelling.
