Almost everything about the Rent is ideal.

Great sightlines from nearly every seat in the house. Sufficient parking, even when we were filling the place. Reasonable access with highways in close proximity.

The drawbacks are a) it is not on campus (but I can argue that two decades ago we never could have drawn more than 20k-25k regularly in Storrs) and b) locals in East Hartford capped capacity (although this could be negotiated) at 55k.

The issues we have been facing for the past near decade are all the result of terrible leadership from the school as a whole and from the athletic department specifically. When Hathaway returned to take over for Lew, after seeing what we were drawing in the brand new Rent as a startup, his thoughts should have been "how soon can we plan Stadium expansion". Instead, he thought " we're at capacity already, I don't need to do anything here".

An achiever would have thought "if we can draw 40k today, we can build to 65k in 15 years, 75k in 25 years". Hathaway never thought that way.

We also have a great venue for tailgating with everyone surrounding the stadium. I do miss the runway though.

Philips comments make you wonder if he's in over his head as we've seen with other Conference Commissioners. Some of the statements he made are really out of the 1980's.

"College sports have never been elitist or singularly commercial."

The first part of Phillips' statement is absolutely false. The second half of the statement has shades of gray.

Here is an actual tweet to interrupt our daily dose of pure speculation.

I wonder if Phillips realizes that altering payouts after the fact could become grounds to dismantle the GOR?

If the members vote to approve the new distributions, I don't think it blows up the GOR. I don't know what the ACC rules are for making a change like that but, unless it requires a super majority, they would probably get the votes since there are enough haves to outvote the have nots.

Plus, the schools it will affect (Cuse & BC among others) don't have any leverage. It's not like they have a place to go. As much as the Cuse blowhards want to claim NYC, if not for their ACC lifeline, they would be us without all the hoops rings. At the end of the day they would just have to sit back & take it

This. It's not going to be forced on the BCs of the world over their objections. They will "consent" to it when told if they don't all the schools whose rights are worth money will be leaving as soon as they can.

You just have to wonder when somebody outside the SEC/B1G is going to start doing something/anything that makes sense.
What moves do you think would make sense at this point for those conf outside of the P2?

I don’t know, the under informed will pledge away the future fairly easily, but take a dollar of what they already have a way and they’ll scream bloody murder.

Now, if ESPN were to renegotiate it’s right steel and the new monies were exclusively, or disproportionately, allocated to the marquee teams, that is something I can see happening. It’s easy not to miss what you’ve never had.

This article is so great. Commissioner Philips, Cry me a river.
Did anyone care that UConn got left behind?

"Maybe the only option for Phillips is to beg for mercy and harken back to a sepia-toned vision of what college athletics supposedly used to be. Student-athletes. Local competition. Shared values. All for one and one for all.

Except the ACC all but started this expansion craze two decades ago when it raided the old Big East for Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech. Ten years later it finished the conference off by adding Louisville, Pitt and Syracuse."

Which in turn has to make me ask the same questions about business executives who run pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, energy companies, weapons & munitions companies, etc, etc, etc.
I get it but, it just seems that outside of Jim Delaney, Kevin Warren, Mike Slive and Greg Sankey EVERY other decision related to CR has turned to for everyone involved.

Miami & Va Tech left the Big East in July 2004. In the 18 years of Conference Realignment since, the stupidity displayed inside the CR world has truly been astounding

When you look at the endgame it makes sense though. This is a consolidation of the big earners who into fewer conferences to get bigger and bigger media deals.

Let’s assume the ACC creates an innovative strategy to generate revenue. The B1G and SEC can simply duplicate that and probably raise even more money than the ACC can doing the same thing.

The ACC added Syracuse for the NYC market.

The B1G added Rutgers for the NYC market.

We only need to look at current media contracts to see which school actually delivered the money from the NYC market. The B1G can leverage NYC in ways the ACC cannot. This is just one example as to why the ACC can innovate all they want, but the B1G and SEC can duplicate that innovation and do it better.
