No... that wasn't the explanation given.

This screenshot also doesn't capture the reset of the clock which did not happen at 2:32.

It happened at 2:31 or 2:30.

This makes all the difference.

Look at this screenshot: 2:29 on the clock. 19 seconds on the play clock. If the guy hadn't reset the clock after Karaban's miss, the play clock would have expired at either 2:11 or 2:10. Malachi was fouled before 2:11 (the whistle came at that time) but he let the ball go at 2:10.

[For some reason my screenshot off of youtube tv is just blacked out, but trust me the clock reset properly, and at 2:29, the play clock was at 19 seconds.]

How could the refs make any other ruling?

Toughing out pain was exactly what he did by playing today.
 
There’s a little bit of human reaction time on a shot clock reset - you have to see possession clearly and then push one of two buttons. It’s never going to reset the instant someone squeezes the ball.

But if they did a film review with a stopwatch, maybe that’s when they would have to start it.

It's more like 2:31 or 2:30.

So when the ref blows the whistle on Malachi's shot, the clock reads 2:11.

For argument sake, you could say that Malachi was fouled within the 20 seconds BUT he let the ball go AFTER the 20 seconds had run out. So you wipe away the 3 and give him 3 foul shots.

Kollieman's math and understanding is bad on this one.

Except, you know, when he played through the remainder of the game he actually got hurt in to make sure we won

This is wrong. Show me a 20 playclock with 2:32 on the screen. I can show you a 2:29 screenshot with 19 seconds.

In my opinion, they handled it incorrectly: it should have been UConn possession on the baseline with about 3 second on the shot clock. The basket should not have counted because it was released after the shot clock would have expired. However, it should not have been a turnover to Illinois because the reality on the floor was a reset shot clock, and the players responded to the live ruling. So, in my opinion, they made the wrong determination to count the basket and also offered a factually untrue explanation for that decision.

I don’t know why so much obsession about that call. The refs made a lot of mistakes and bad calls today. It was an awful crew and in my opinion the mistakes mostly benefited Illinois.

Also the clocks on TV aren’t always the real
clocks.

Not just this game - last year he had a tendency to drift if things weren’t going well.

And yeah - the koolaid mafia is out. Say 10 positive things and the defense mafia will zero in on the one non.

Hurley said his health was about a week out in post game.

Some fun stats:

Time tied: 0:13 (when the score was 0-0)
Time UConn led: 39:47
Time Illinois led: 0:00

H1: UConn +11
H2: UConn +2
Final: UConn +13 (spread was UConn 4.5)

It’s okay if Illinois is +7 in the last 10 minutes if UConn is +21 in the first 30. Running the clock continues to raise our heart rates and gray our hairs, but we remain undefeated using that strategy in the last 3ish years

It’s okay to win and be happy about it!
