He ain't heavy, he's my brother

Ortiz was tested over and over while he was putting up big stats later in his career. Either he was the greatest cheat in the history of professional sports or he was just a great hitter. Agree to disagree on which is more likely, I guess.
The other thing I always wondered about was that Ortiz's supposed partner in crime, Manny Ramirez, tested positive twice in his career and was suspended both times, for 50 games the first time and 100 games the second time. If they were both doing the same thing and had the same resources then why one and not the other? Was Ortiz just better at not getting caught?

Most of them weren't "officially caught."

Only for non Yankee fans. Yankee fans who wayched every game he played feel like his leadership is what made it possible for others to perform at their best But i know we live in an analytics world where watching the game is considered less important than reviewing the stats. Sigh.
As a Yankees fan and massive Jeter fan, I think this is precisely why Jeter fits the bill.

No doubt he was a great player (statistically), but what elevated him to the icon he is was winning those titles under the brightest lights (an iconic franchise in NYC) as the captain of the team.

Jeter was a household name across America for his entire career. If he was on a random crappy team with no post season success, he would have been Mike Trout. A great player that baseball / sports fans know, but not an American icon & household name.

As a Sox fan, I always respected Jeter. He was great!

The guy that popped into my mind was Scottie Pippen. He did a lot things very well and may have even been the best perimeter defender in the league for a little while. A few years ago, some writers even had him in the top 30 players of all time, but wonder if he's on another team and doesn't have the rings, how would have been remembered.
I loved watching him play, but how much did winning 6 rings with MJ help.

Only other guy who put up similar numbers after age 35 was (drumroll)…Barry Bonds.

Ortiz was 26 when he came to the Red Sox, coming off of a 20 HR, .840 OPS season (with less than 475 ABs).

Of all the "steroid guys" in the HOF conversation, only he and Sosa didn't either (1) test positive after the 2003 initial testing or (2) admit to using steroids after 2003, and Sosa was nearly done by that point.

sub par for him maybe in those years but not in comparison to the rest of the qbs.
2007, his last year in GB he was top 5 in most qb categories.
His year with jets, his worst, he was top 10 in all categories and was 8-3 until he tore his bicep
Then made the NFC championship in 2009 after retiring.

He had 1 average year.

He is justly rated: nobody calls him the GOAT. That is usually reserved for Brady, Manning, Mahomes, Montana (for big wins)
Favre comes in as top 5-10 qbs ever in conversation and that's exactly where he belongs.
Belongs in prison for fraud of govt funds.

There was poll from 2005 calling him the most overrated player and he played the best baseball of his career after that.

Human growth hormone is a great drug.

I wouldn’t take Cal Ripken Jr over Derek Jeter, I’d take Jeter any day of the week. Rodriguez and Ernie Banks I can see but they switched positions halfway thru their careers.

Both are overrated. Ripken’s peak was better, but Jeter was good for longer, even if he was never a top 5 player. Both hung on at the end through some really mediocre seasons.

Jeter has been called overrated his entire career so that word "overrated" loses its luster after awhile. I say he was overhyped by the NY media, the national media always called him overrated.

There was poll from 2005 calling him the most overrated player and he played the best baseball of his career after that. Probably should've won the mvp in 2006 in a year he batted .343, in 2009 Jeter batted .334 in that year a catcher was batting .380 so sometimes is a bit about luck as Pedroia was an mvp batting .280. I agree he never should've won the 5 gold gloves.

Pedroia batted over .320 when he won.

I remember a running catch on the third baseline against the Red Sox where he couldn't stop his momentum and took 2 possibly 3 steps diving headfirst into the crowd cutting his face up.

The only other one I remember where he ended up in the crowd was also on the third baseline and he didn't really take any steps.

Send me the one where he took 10 steps before diving into the bleachers. That does sound pretty crazy.

That game was the end of Nomar in a Sox uniform.

Tim Tebow as a Florida Gator had insane talent around him. Urban Meyer used Tebow as the face of the Gators to cover up the criminal activity going on in that program, and still does to this day.

Remember how Fisk was able to leave? The Sox forgot to tender an offer before the deadline. Like JI Randy Smith used to say, it wasn't a curse, it was bad management.
Are we sure they forgot? Or was it intentional like some would say

What? Nobody gives a rats ass about steroids anymore? Some of the very best players in the history of baseball are seemingly forever banned from the Hall of Fame because people care about steroids.

Steroids make you much better at everything, it's why good players turned into great players and great players turned superhuman.
Are you admitting to steroid use, and suggesting that without steroids you'd be Greatjohn?

I'll let somebody else address the "better at everything" part.

He played really well in one of the two SBs, but not as much in the other. And had he not gotten bailed out by a dropped interception and a helmet catch, his legacy would look much different.
And Brady/Belichek don't get their first if they didn't steal the Rams playbook.

Sure keep telling yourself that. That’s why it went down to the last two minutes. Please stop with the insane baseless conspiracy theories.

I thought it was that game where Nomar sat on the bench feeling sorry for himself while the rest of the team was celebrating an exciting comeback win.

I'm a Sox fan and I'm not sure where this is coming from. Varitek was a good catcher who was a good hitter for the position but I don't think any Sox fans think he was great. Certainly not Hall of Fame caliber or anything close.
I'm not a sox fan so I'll defer to your expertice. It sure seemed like around here, in these parts, they thought veritek was great, even better than Posada.

They also seemed to think Papelbon was something special.

Baseless, ha. It's well documented that they spied on other teams. Goodell whitewashed the investigation.

Also, we found the NY homer that blindly hates all things Boston lol.
OK, you're sour grapes that the Giants beat the Patriots twice in the Super Bowl and need to belittle Eli's contribution by pointing out a couple of breaks that went his way. I was simply pointing out the Patriots also had some breaks go their way. They also would have lost to Seattle and Atlanta if not for coaching malpractice.

Not at all. The Patriots have won that game several times since while the Giants haven’t sniffed it. Cry more.

Edit: Smith, Shout out to the NHS forward Emmitt Lewis (Smith).
Hate to say it but this topic screams Emmitt Lewis. Running behind arguably one of the greatest lines in the history of the game with the greatest offensive lineman in Larry Allen (RIP). Really never trucked like Campbell, or made you miss like Barry, nor could take it home like Dorsett. Smart back, good vision. Good not great running back.
