Hawkins injury.

You’re putting words in my mouth but this is the boneyard so wouldn’t expect you to actually read into things before posting. I stand by my reaction to Hurleys comment.

It’s ok to say you misunderstood the process. Your words are out there. You said it was Tua-ish. You said he was being taken out of the concussion protocol. When you start questioning how this staff handles potential head injuries, implying that they would sacrifice a player’s health to keep him playing, you don’t get to stand behind, “this board is awful!”

Evaluation of his injury/injuries is ongoing, which will inform the treatment and recovery process.

It looked like it didn’t have a huge amount of impact on the court from what I saw, but I did only see one replay
NFL helmets were made of leather until the late 40s. I can see a player not being a allowed, alone in wearing today's helmet. I wonder if the leather one would be allowed? No one gets hurt by an accidental head butt. To the contrary.

Hawk's health is A #1 concern. Might not be pretty; but IDK. Seems plausible to me. Both for safety and being allowed.

Watching replay he didn't hit his head too hard, but it was in a sensitive spot (directly back of the head), so we'll see.
Replays never give a true picture of contact. I suppose one can say a hit to the head that doesn't crack the skull wasn't too hard. But this was a blow, if it was to your head I doubt you would have said it wasn't too hard. Real time I was thinking he out for a month, at least. And while not every headshot cause a concussion, a hit this hard to someone that has already had one makes that hard to believe here.

Great sign but still not comfortable until we get clarity on what "fine" entails

So many arms chair doctors. I trust our medical staff. If he's cleared to play that means he passed all protocols. If they sit him for a few games then that's fine too. No one is rushing him back just so he can play against BU.

I'm certainly no expert and no doctor. But honestly, it didn't look like he hit his head THAT hard and didn't seem wobbly after. I think they just took a cautious approach with him due to the issues last year.

For clarification, how many concussions did he have last year? I only remember one, but another poster mentioned two. Regardless, I'm sure we will get more clarity over the next couple days, but at this point I'd be surprised if he missed more than a game.

I kind of remember one in the beginning of the year and one at the end. I'm probably wrong though. The human memory sucks.

After remaining on the ground he jumped up and then sat back down. I would say he looked wobbly.

Trainer does an impact test. If no concussion symptoms, then you don't see a doc. Pretty simple my man. He never was IN a concussion protocol

In addition, whether a player needs to go through all the steps of the concussion protocol to be cleared to play is not a one-time, split second decision. If further evaluation warrants it, it happens. In general, passing that first level of assessment is a good sign.

(I know you know that, I’m just putting it out there)

Any updates on the TV? Looked pretty nasty from here
Actually, it didn’t look nasty at all, at least to me. If Jordan didn’t have a history of concussions, I wouldn’t have given it a second thought.

I have to admit that I am worried, though, and will be until we hear good news to the contrary. Not so much for the team, though it’s a huge loss to us, but for Jordan. If you are so inclined, say a prayer for him.

No, my guy. I get that he’s arguing for the sake of arguing but my point, my guy, is who gives a ufck about whiplash since his head bounced off the court. Go have an academic argument about what causes concussions elsewhere, my guy.

His eyes were glossy as hell when he returned to the bench. The announcers were saying tears, they were wrong. Hope he’s ok.

Donny saying “he’s a pro, he’s definitely a pro” is ridiculous as it was for Hurley to say. Let the kid find his way please.
They looked bloodshot to me. It would not be surprising to me if he was upset upon hearing he was going to be pulled from the game. He knows what’s at stake for him if he ends up being prone to further concussions.

Just stop digging man. You jumped to the conclusion that he had been removed from the protocol and totally ignored the possibility that they may not have had time to diagnose him one way or the other. The staff clearly made the right move to sit him for the rest of the night and have done nothing to earn your assertion that they’re not properly treating Hawkins’ injury.

I was reacting to Hurley's quote "Not in concussion protocol" which means he is not in concussion protocol.

That seems like a great way to go about a head injury with a kid who has had multiple concussions.

Zags source is 100% Dan Hurley btw. If Zags says Hawk will be fine, then he likely dodged a major bullet. For all we know, he could have been teary eyed on the bench because he was nervous and frustrated.
That is definitely what it was. 8 minutes into your new season as the teams expected leading scorer, and you’re forced out of the game. It would take some time to process for anyone who cares.

i hope this is all it was.

I don't know if the fall resulted in a concussion or not and nobody here does either.
I don't know if the eyes of JH that the camera showed a short time after returning to the bench were tears or a physical reaction to the incident.
I do know that keeping him out of the game was the absolute correct decision
I do think that Hawk was pressing too much on the offensive side of the court and he was edgy, but he was really good on the defensive end and has improved that aspect of his game.
I do feel that UConn needs JH to be 100% because they sure need his offense
I wish all the best for Hawk and looking forward to watching him contribute as soon as possible.

The assumption is he wasn’t taken out of it, he just hasn’t formally entered it yet. I say assumption because we don’t know of course, so it’s best to wait before taking a position that assumes the staff doesn’t have Jordan’s best interests at heart.

Using the concussion protocol language clearly has big consequences for Jordan as some here are already speculating he should consider ending his basketball career. You don’t casually suggest that if you’re Dan Hurley, you wait to know. That likely means doctors involved. This isn’t the NFL with trained specialists on every sideline.

What we do know doesn’t support the argument that Jordan was “removed from the protocol”:

He was immediately removed from the game.
He missed lots of action last year as a result of concussions. There is no example to be pointed to where this coaching staff didn’t take injuries like this seriously.

We wait.
It isn’t the NFL but UConn has some very good and well respected neurologists. Dr Alessi consults with the AD is highly regarded. He also is the Yankees neuro guy and is a consultant to the NFL PA so it isn’t like UConn is picking a guy off the internet as you kind of make it sound.

One problem with concussions is that they are hard to diagnose in part because players lie. They want to play. But UConn will have a really top doc looking at Hawkins

Latest science says that if there's a risk of concussion the first move is a gigantic gravity bong hit so that could have been it.
It’s good that they were being proactive about his safety.

I’m going to do a preemptive just in case I get hit in the head today. You can never be too cautious.
I haven’t seen any studies on it, but I kind of feel like taking a gigantic gravity bong hit would decrease the odds of you getting a concussion or unless someone discovers getting DoorDash causes concussions.
