He definitely is more nuanced than people are giving him credit for.

He has broken with "code", so to speak for two reasons -- love (which has sometimes been portrayed as a pure motive; i.e. Robert's Rebellion), and to serve the greater good. In joining the wildlings he was actually following orders.

Curious what you think they got wrong there . . . he seems to fit the descriptions in the books fairly well, though he is a bit short.

Loras is supposed to be one of the greatest fighters in the seven kingdoms, the actor looks like a little kid.

Just as he is described, young, slight of build . . . . Also a great "tournament" fighter, not necessarily when it matters.

Not quite. Cersei burned him out. The Boltons totally screwed and fooled him. He hasn't outsmarted Varys as far as I can tell. And he is/was obsessed with a woman you just admitted was an imbecile and the bane of her family. However clever he thinks he is, he's a wuss.

As a meritocracy, you could argue Tyrion would likely be a better king than the rest. But realistically, nobody is perfect. Dany, mixed with Jon, with Tyrion advising, is a solid team. I think that's the eventual winning side.

Varys got run out of Westeros after his schemes with Ilyro failed and failed again. He sought to bring peace to the realm, while Littlefinger sought to sow chaos and opportunity. Who has performed better by their own standards?

It was more devil's advocate from my end. But, fwiw, given the the general proclivities in Westeros, I found Littlefinger's unquenched desires far less reprehensible than Ser meryn Trant's. Which, fortunately, were quickly extinguished by good friend Arya. Perhaps Littlefinger meets the same fate.

An underlying theme in the books is that the value of honor is questionable in the quest for power...and so far it has appeared worthless sans some deus ex machina intervention like Snow's resurrection(s)...Arya is another variation...in fact, when you look at Bran, Benjen, the Dragons, etc....there doesn't seem to be a non-venal path to the throne without a little help from the gods...

Yup. Stupid Danny just bounces around the Far East, barely interacting with anyone in the main story, and she is going to swoop in on dragons and rule.

They made him too much of a dandy in the series. He was great looking, perhaps even androgynous idk, but I don't think it ever said anything about being particularly effeminate.

Varys seems to have ended up with far more opportunity than Littlefinger. One is striding at the head of a great fleet, to live in a massive Island castle with mild climate, with a legit fireproof queen, an army of horse warriors, mercenaries, and neutered lunatics, and a bunch of dragons.

The other is stuck in a blizzard, in a dark keep in the middle of a permanent blizzard, with little food nor warmth, a bunch of miserable dudes in shabby black clothing, an army of very smelly crazy people, and the only chicks are a couple of kids, a 7 foot tall butch behemoth, and a hot young biscuit who hates your guts. Oh, there's the matter of a damn near indestructible army of dead people marching down on your position to cut your in two.

'Influencing' or 'orchestrating' are better words. If you are influencing/orchestrating, as Varys and Littlefinger are doing, you are part of The Game. You don't think Tywin Lannister was a player? All you need to do is influence or control to get your name in the hat.

You are right, those are better descriptors. But have some self awareness- influencing and orchestrating are great roles without the risk of actually sitting on the Iron Throne. Being king is pretty straightforward: have the right bloodline or be the guy that kills the previous bloodline. Littlefinger and Varys are neither. But again- kudos to them for making the most of the hands they've been dealt. They just shouldn't delude themselves that they have a real shot at the Throne.

You sell Dany short. She was worthless, but she's learned well. You have to give her props for burning up all the Dothraki leaders and walking out alive (and naked). She keeps getting better at this, just as Jon does.
