The only tarnishing will be of the complaining school when, is it inevitably will, the rest of the story comes out. There is no way this can make Geno look anything but good. Not only that, but if Geno had known that all of this foofarah was going to hapen, do you think he would have gone ahead with the call? Damn straight, he would have!
UConn will not come out of this looking bad.

Exactly, UConn will actually come out looking good in this. NCAA becomes even more of a laughingstock if that's possible and once the person who made the call is identified, they will look almost as ridiculous as the NCAA and Geno will beat that team by 100 points.

8 out of the 9 comments on the message board under the Bleacher Report article when I looked were either supportive of Geno are we're in the, "Who cares?" Category. The other one just says they understand how the call could create a recruiting advantage since she'll remember the kind words when she's being recruited. I agree, but don't think the poster knew that she has basically already verballed....

It would be awesome if the school could, you know stop cheating, just for a few years. I mean the men just got off probation for God's sake so you'd think *someone* in the Athletic Department could say "yo Geno we don't have a great track record with the NCAA so maybe on these borderline cases we should just err on the side of caution." Sorry, I know most on here just care about the streaks and Ws, but I do actually give a damn about the athletic programs keeping it clean, and a secondary violation is still a violation.
I sincerely hope you aren't serious and are just being sarcastic.

To be honest, things like the Geno/Mo'ne complaint would never happen in men's basketball. It's an embarrassment for the women's game

John Altavilla @jaltavilla · 2h
It's a reflection of the jealousy and hard-feelings that still permeate the women's game about Auriemma and #UConnwomen

Jeff Jacobs @jacobscourant · 3h
How do you have respect for the NCAA when it rules that Auriemma calling a Little Leaguer with congratulations is a recruiting violation?

John Altavilla @jaltavilla · 3h
The implication is wide-ranging. Can a coach no longer congratulate a middle school athlete who admires their program? #ridiculous #power5

Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru · 3h
The upshoot will be the identity will come out because having now dodged ridicule person will eventually brag they were smarter than us.

That's the second time in this thread that you used "cheating" to describe UConn's actions. Being declared guilty by the NCAA in this incident has nothing to do with cheating and that should be apparent by now. As Ice said, they issued their ruling in record time while "preferred" schools commit serious violations without recriminations. Saying that UConn "cheated" is like saying Josef K was guilty.

Didn't ol' Pat get a verbal from a 13 year old? I don't remember anyone calling the NCAA.

Keeping it clean? Cheating??? I don't know you personally so I won't call you an idiot but your posts are idiotic.

I said the same thing when the men were banned. I was wrong then just as you'd be wrong now. When it comes to the NCAA the only thing you can do is bend over and take it. It's not going away any time soon, especially not over a women's basketball program.
so let me get this straight, you are comparing what the men's team did (was a violation) to a phone call to a Philly kid the same ?

The men didn't have a recruting violation. It was having to low an APR.

What was unfair is they went back to prior years before the guidelines were set.

This has to be a new record response time by the NCAA. One has to wonder what they have against UConn.

"It shows you what is wrong not only for things that go on but also with some of the people that I coach against," he (Geno) said.

My money's on Kentucky, Rutgers or Penn State.

So let me get this straight......

Geno calls a 13yo girl to congratulate her (probably making her the happiest 13yo all summer) and he gets a secondary recruiting violation the next day from the NCAA

However

North Carolina can have fake classes for students for years and the NCAA can't make a decision yet??

Really??

Is something wrong with this picture? Maybe it's me?

They have a hard on for UConn. That's the bottom line, and the fact that UConn just shrugs it off and says oh well it's only a minor violation is what let's this NCAA bullying continue. Between this and the Maya Moore thing it's pathetic. But I guess the rules are the rules, though as you point out if you're a big enough brand name the NCAA will go to great lengths to find the loopholes in their own rules to avoid enforcement on one of the untouchables. Even though at the end of the day this will have no real impact on the team, I am still pissed as I see it as NCAA targeting a school for something that's a non-issue just because we're not UNC. Some one at the NCAA should have good enough sense to say to the accusing school "you know what this is nothing and a waste of our time and unless you want us to start poking around for minor violations in your athletic department I suggest you withdraw your complaint."

NCAA
Let me get this straight. This is the same NCAA that has taken years to "investigate" North Carolina takes about a day to rule on UCONN?
On second thought, I guess we shouldn't worry too much about this. The NCAA is on its deathbed as evidence by the power Five conferences now setting many of their own rules. My prediction is that by the time to recruit Mo'ne, the NCAA will be gone.

I don't have twitter, but I read on another board that this is so ridiculous that he wondered if Dawn Staley would be cited for all her tweets to Mo'ne on August 20th.

If she did tweet to her that day, how is that different than phone contact?

If the NCAA logic on this recruiting violation is true, there are plenty of other violations to report. Will someone please contact the NCAA about this obvious recruiting violation concerning Lailla Willams, the daughter of Candace Parker and Shelden Williams? She clearly has the potential to be a top player.

Nailed it- it is a complete Joke. The word "Hypocracy" just doesn't even come close to describing it. No Carolina is"To Big to Fail"!

If I have my guesses I'm leaning any of 3 ways! Muffet McGraw, ND / Brenda Frese, MD / Holly Warlick, TN. The first 2 because of obvious nasty/ jealous comments previously, or TN through the SEC!
I think it really sucks that anyone can accuse someone of violations and the NCAA won't release those people or the school! It can't happen in a court of law but the NCAA has no clue!
And even if it is a minor violation you have to be pretty petty to go after something like this!

Before the call Geno checked with UCONN's compliance people and they said it wasn't a violation because Mo'ne Davis is not in HS! I wonder if there's a NEW compliance person on the herizon?

You are the second person to mention Rutgers. Almost certainly not.

Vivian may or may not like Geno, but she most certainly respects him. Plus, she wants to play UConn (as a Rutgers fan, the Lord only knows why). Plus, by the time someone is recruiting the girl seriously, Vivian will be retiring (I wouldn't be shocked if Geno won't be considering it by then, too). Plus, like the rest of us, she "gets it" that Geno doesn't need to cheat to be successful. She said so at a fan club meeting one time. And I just can't picture it.

Who are they going to kick around when Geno retires in 2 years after winning his 11th NC game and rides off in the CT sunset?.....
2 years? I'm betting Geno doesn't sniff retirement until he gets close to or reaches 15 NC's. Not saying that's his goal, but I think he's around for at least 5-7 more years and given the way he's recruiting, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could win 5 more in no time...

The NCAA is truly an embarrassment. I'm glad Mo'ne is being protected from all the predatory coaches.
