If you're referring to Nate Miles in 2010, then yes. I don't think Miles ever even made it to campus, but UConn and Calhoun were sanctioned for the infractions nonetheless. I think the rules changed shortly thereafter.

Miles made it to campus and shortly thereafter was escorted off of campus for very poor behavior. In between, he never made it on the court.

Call me naive then. My worry now is that the complaint is quietly dropped in a few months after the NCAA or conference gets around to investigating it, but all anyone remembers is UConn was accused of cheating - again - and where there's smoke there's fire even if you can't yet see the flames.

My thought is this will die off, until the tourney, and like Lazarus, it will again raise it's ugly head. Anyone want to disagree with this theory.

Soooooo, the next time ANY girls youths teams play at a woman's college basketball game, for example at half time or before the start of a game, is that a violation? And what if they give the girls shirts, basketballs or just talk to them?

This is beyond stupid.

I’m waiting to hear that the NCAA has found that the UConn women’s basketball team visiting the White House 4 times since 2009 constitutes a recruiting violation because Obama’s daughters (Natasha & Malia) could be potential recruits. I am not even sure if they play basketball; but, that is a technically that the NCAA clearly is not interested in.

2 years? I'm betting Geno doesn't sniff retirement until he gets close to or reaches 15 NC's. Not saying that's his goal, but I think he's around for at least 5-7 more years and given the way he's recruiting, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could win 5 more in no time...

IMHO at a minimum he will finish the 4 remaining years he has left on his current contract.

The press release from AD Warde said that Geno called the UConn compliance office for approval before he made the call and they told him it was OK to make the call. Then he made the call.

My question here is what rule was violated? If they define a prospective student-athlete as someone who has started ninth grade classes, then it can't be that rule. Or does the NCAA not even have to cite the rule?

Apparently the call was in violation of rule 13.1.3.1. I wonder if no one complained would the NCAA even have done anything? The whole thing was made very public.

Will the NCAA reverse course? This is getting quite a lot of bad press.

My dad used to have a saying in situations such as this and I'm sure it wasn't his originally: it takes a bigger man to admit he's wrong.

I find it odd that the NCAA ruled this as a secondary violation using this girl's celebrity as basis for their decision.

I doubt they will backtrack at this point especially given all the attention.

And I believe the finger pointing and speculation is harmful because it's based on no evidence whatsoever, only conjecture. Sure as loyal fans we are upset and angry, but in responding in this manner, It kind of makes us look petty IMHO.

That said I do hope we find out who complained....

The men didn't have a recruting violation. It was having to low an APR.

What was unfair is they went back to prior years before the guidelines were set.

They got whacked a bit. One of the last schools to do so.
From the Los That sports blog. I imagine other sources would confirm also.

Uconn] also had its scholarships reduced, from 13 to 12, for the next three seasons, and will be limited to five official paid recruiting visits for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years, the committee said. The committee said it based the sanctions on its findings that Calhoun failed to monitor the program and failed to create an atmosphere promoting rules compliance.
UConn has defended coach Jim Calhoun, saying the evidence doesn’t support allegations that he did not foster NCAA rules compliance.
The committee also placed a two-year show-cause penalty on former UConn assistant Beau Archibald, in addition to other penalties levied against the university.
The penalties did not include a postseason ban for the Huskies.
NCAA investigators said UConn’s staff made hundreds of improper calls and text messages to recruits, gave recruits improper benefits and improperly distributed free tickets to high school coaches and others.
The violations centered on former UConn recruit Nate Miles and his relationship with former manager-turned-agent Josh Nochimson. Miles did not play for the 2009 Huskies team that went to the Final Four, but only because he was dismissed from school after he violated a restraining order against a woman.

I have no intention of letting this die off. I am organizing a campaign to make it go viral via Facebook. The NCAA deserves to be publicly shamed over this.

I like the idea but since the NCAA has proven it has no shame I doubt if it will work :(

Let's play Inspector Columbo, shall we:
First, which coach had her team blown out in the Final 4 Championship game?
Next, which coach has had a long running p***ing contest with Geno?
Which school has an inflated ego of themselves?

With those questions answered by our crack staff of posters, it may bring us closer to our answer of the "unnamed" school.
The SEC theory is old and outdated. Really, Pat Summit is no longer part of the picture. UT has it's own problems. Maryland? Not enough history with Geno. The Pac-12? Nope, at least not in my way of thinking.

So, with all of that said, anyone else want to make a "shot in the dark" guess?

ND is Inspector Columbo's hunch.

This post is meant somewhat tongue in cheek about how the NCAA thinking process operates. We are soon to know who the rat was. The NCAA is going to leak the name as they figure that the press and social media will devour the revelation thus taking the NCAA out of the spotlight. It is not paranoia if it turns out to be correct. :)

I don't think it's fair to speculate. It wouldn't surprise me if it came from a school out of left field that has us all scratching our heads. Also it may not have necessarily been a WCBB coach that initiated the complaint (unless someone has confirmation of this). For all we know it could have been an overzealous athletic department employee (or athletic director) with enough working knowledge of the rules and regulations that happened to see the phone call mentioned on ESPN.

Sure sounds like it was a coach....

Except John A. reported a high-level source told him it wasn't ND, Duke or MD.

You think Geno knows or is just guessing like us? Does the NCAA disclose that information amongst the schools involved on the condition of confidentiality? I took that quote from Geno as a generality. Wonder if Mo'ne will get asked about this whole thing tonight.

According to today's Courant UConn knows it wasn't a team from the AAC or ACC.

If so, it's gotta' be Tenn.

We have long been aware of the ineptitude of the NCAA. As sure as the Lord makes little green apples, the name of the complainer (school, AD, or coach) will be leaked, either inadvertantly or deliberately. Until that happens:

Most secondary violations come with zero penalty and I expect that will be the case here. As for the NCAA ruling on this so quickly - it is not surprising because there are no issues regarding 'facts' and it is such a minor issue and results in a 'secondary violation' that there was no reason not to rule immediately. I am pretty sure that is why the AD just said we disagree but are just letting this stand. Pretty sure the NCAA said there would be no 'sanctions' involved when they made the ruling or Uconn and the AD would have pursued this further.
As for what school filed the complaint ... reportedly not ACC or AAC so in the NE that leaves B1G or one of the mid-majors. If it had no local connection I supposed it could be B12 or Pac10 or SEC but it does just seem really petty.

ahem.

Someone may have turned Geno in to the NCAA but it is humanly impossible to turn Geno into the NCAA.

Yes, of course, as is often the case, you're right that until science progresses far beyond it's current abilities, it is currently impossible to turn Geno into the NCAA but....

we've witnessed one small but significant achievement in that at least one person at one university and one member of the NCAA provided us with the proof that human beings can indeed turn into a jackass.
