KO offered a lot of offensive freedom and ran pro sets. Those sets were harder to run for CBB players, and so there really wasn't a year where the offense was as efficient as the defense. The 2016 team—which should have been Top 10 with all the talent it had—had the 12th ranked defense but the 59th ranked offense.
This is not because KO didn't run an offense, though, despite what people who don't know basketball said. It's because the type of offense he ran was probably not the type of offense best suited to the players on given team. Even the Shabazz team didn't have a Top 30 offense in terms of efficiency. But when it all clicked... well, we see where that team ended up and should appropriately judge the potential of KO's offense.
