Family-owned pizzeria brings tavern-style pie to new CT location. They found their ‘sweet spot’

-> Connecticut-based Riko’s Pizza is continuing to expand around the state, adding a new location in Ridgefield. The business plans to open its new location at 955 Ethan Allen Highway in May or June.

It will be Riko’s sixth corporate-owned location and the 13th overall. The family business, founded by Rico Imbrogno in Stamford in 2011, specializes in ultra-thin, tavern-style pizza.

The Ridgefield location will be two floors. The upstairs is a 3,000-square-foot dining level with 16 bar seats. Drinks will include craft beers, wines and specialty cocktails…

Shortcut

Although I have never gone to the Plantation location, I have heard good things about it. Apparently, not enough business. I use the other Florida location in Delray Beach to get Pepe's when I am in the area.
 
Technically it's a bit outside of CT's border but not a bad pie in Lodz, Poland.

A spicy pie with a spicy sausage, crumnled nduja, and sliced chilis. Earned it's name "Inferno".
An extra 30 seconds would have been perfect.

It’s been a while since I lurked here. Checking back in with recent travel to the Naples region with lots of pies consumed, including 2 that are rated by some to be top 10 in the world.

These brothers each own a shop in Caserta.

These lists must be partial to Napoli style. I appreciate many styles of pizza and do not snob out of many categories - I love New Haven, NY, etc - but I always go back to Naples as the gold standard.

There are so many great options to try here it’s difficult to rate them, but fun to include some “Top 10s” in the tour.

For the number one rated pizza, I’ll say it does live up. It’s great. The crust is light and airy and flavorful. It has enough of a crust that you can pick up a triangle cut piece, which is not always the case here, but no crisp or crunch to the underside. It’s really only crispy at the blacked air pockets in the edge crust. Toppings are perfect.

First and Last Tavern - not sure if mentioned but actually has very good pizza along with pasta dishes and breads. Happy hour menu includes $3 pizza slices. Not bad.

Is that in Middletown? If so, I second the opinion.
The Middletown one closed a long time ago. I had their pizza in the Hartford one and the Middletown one and I liked it. I went to the Glastonbury one a 2 or 3 years ago and was thoroughly unimpressed. Not even close to the other locations I had pizza at.

I am familiar with the Plainville location right across from J. Timothy's. Haven't tried pizza in the other locations so I can't compare.

I grew up a couple blocks from the Hartford one. It used to just be the bar area. The part that is a restaurant now was a furniture store. And they didn’t have pizza. Behind the bar was a big pot of sauce, meatballs and sausage and you got a to go order with shells, sauce, a meatball, a sausage and a side salad in the tin where it got warm and was actually really good.

My parents would send me down there with the money, I’d get four dinners and bring it back home when I was maybe 10?

One of my good friends in college grew up a few doors down from there on Maple Avenue. It was across the street from a park, just south of the intersection of South Street and Maple Avenue. Wasn't the greatest area but it was generally safe back then. Haven't been over there in 40 years so no idea what it's like now.

That’s Goodwin Park and South Catholic High was on South St. I went there and played baseball at that park. Good chance I recognize your friends last name.

It's a bit of a haul, but I recommend Popolo.

It's in the Fabrika courtyard area on Ninoshivili Street in Tbilisi, Georgia. Costs around $4.

I'm sure you do. He played basketball at South Catholic and graduated there in 1983.
 
I graduated in 1985. He probably played with Doug McCrory and Brian Walmsley. I think the 1984 team went to the state championship against Charles Smith from the Knicks.

Was Mike Thomas on those teams? I remember him as a quick guard from Enfield. I was out of South by then but I attended a good game at St Thomas Aquinas in a full gym around that time. One of the Farrell brothers may have played on that Aquinas team. I believe five or so played for Aquinas.

Yes. Smooth shooting lefty.

Doug McCrory actually went to Holy Cross and was one of the players that accused George Blaney of being racist. He then transferred to university of Hartford.
