OT: Best Pizza in CT

Is it time to get rid of the pizza thread?

In the northwest corner, that means, from Torrington, north and west. 1) Deano's Pizza in Lakeville, a thin-crust Brooklyn style pie. Great specialty pies. Lasagna pie, buffalo chicken pie and sweet chili chicken pies are very good. 2) The Berkshire Café in Torrington 3) Roma's in Torrington 4) Bohemian Pizza in Litchfield 5) Kent Pizza in Winsted
 
I would like to reopen it.

We had a double header of disappointing pizza experiences in New Haven recently. Went to Modern on the 26th and had their Italian Bomb. It was more like an Italian firecracker--skimpy.

Went to Pepe's on the 28th. Oh boy--worst Pepe's ever. And Pepe's is typically my favorite. BUT, thick bread, uncooked dough, globby in places, and the endcrust completely separated from the slice when you went to pick it up! We couldn't figure out if we were at Pepe's or some place in Indiana. And the place was teeming with tourists. Maybe the only excuse they had was that the computers were down and so they had trouble keeping track of orders?

Sally's has never disappointed us this way. And Zuppardi's is a new and recent favorite when we're in town. This is bad news for myself and my oldest daughter, because we are the Pepe's fans in the family. We are now going to lose the argument and head over to Sally's and Zuppardi's more frequently.

Well at least he got the right pie there, and I'm glad to see that he got a good one. Based on my most recent experience there with a clam pie, I would venture that his celebrity status made sure that they were going to deal him a good one, which they are clearly capable of doing.

But the guy has so many things going against his proclamation. First, he's a Brit. Second, he only had pizza for the first time five years ago! How this is even possible is beyond me. Third, he doesn't generally like Neapolitan style apizza. Finally, you can't declare the debate closed when he didn't try Sally's, Modern and BAR, for starters, to compare.

And I still say Bufalina is better and more consistent than all of them, but I know some disagree that it's apples to apples.

Zuppardis has always been my favorite, always get the sausage and mushroom when I go there. Pepe's has definitely lost a notch or two over the past 20 years IMO. Back in the 80's when Pepe's was still really good, I used go to the "Spot" in back of the restaurant and stayed away from the restaurant pie. The Spot was always better IMO, the oven in the "Spot" made for nicer crust.

IIRC that is the original oven.

Someone told me recently that they rented out The Spot for their daughter's rehearsal dinner and it was a huge hit, not surprisingly. Apparently they even let the guests make pizzas when you do that, which would be pretty cool. Also unsurprisingly, it wasn't cheap.
 
Anyone been to Minervini's in Wallingord? Was there around the holidays and quite honestly was one of the best pies I've ever had.

(Had to post on pizza to avoid the boredom of this ecu game)

Totally agree with that.

Funny I just saw a colleague at lunch who was saying that Charley's Place, the cafeteria at the Yale School of Management (which is also the best lunch value in New Haven), makes good pizza in their wood fired oven once a week. I told him that pizza is one of the foods I have to limit--probably twice a month on average now--but I love it so much that I try to make sure it's only great pizza when I have it.

Cheese is the other one, and I've been much less successful limiting that of late, as it seems everyone has been bringing amazing cheese to our house--or serving it at theirs--for every gathering the past month. It's basically a salt lick for me; I will sit there and plow through it until it's gone.

That was our regular spot when I was a kid, when it was in the small house next to the current place. I loved it back then, had it a few times in the last 5-10 years when I'm visiting my folks and it's as average as it gets these days IMO.

Sure, it isn't at the level of the icons but it is still good. And the rest of the food is good too. I don't know where you live but, in my area, this would be the best pizza around. The best pizza here is awful by CT standards. Average is relative.

??! My father used to own a luncheonette called Charlie's Place at the corner of Whitney, Grove and Church Street, and our two biggest sources of customers were the courthouse and the Yale School of Management! Hmmmmm.... The Management building is one block and a half away from where the old Century Building once stood on that corner.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Is that where One Century T0wer now sits? I believe I was told Malone's was also there at one time.

Anywho, the cafeteria is obviously heavily subsidized by Yale, which is why it is such a great deal.

Yes, my Dad's place was right over Malone's.

I used to go down to Malone's on break and play Centipede as a teen. Still remember the smell of cigars and spilled whiskey. That was a pretty sloppy place.
 
Planet Fitness has free pizza on the first Monday of every month. Seems it’s popular with a lot of the members but it’s pretty much the last place I can ever imagine spending my pizza chits.
 
Other than the big 4 Pepe’s/Sally’s/Modern and Bar. There are some others in the New Haven area that are very good. DaLegna, Ernie’s, One 6 Three in New Haven. Roseland in Derby, Tolli’s in East Haven.

I live in Milford, Papa’s, Jimmy’s, GiGi’s are very good. Not Wooster street quality, but very good. Not a huge fan of Colony, but it gets good reviews and it has a great atmosphere.

We all know that New Haven style apizza is the best.

But, what about Hartford? In my opinion, Hartford can make a good pie (if not New Haven quality). What are some your favorite Hartford area pizza places?

First and Last is my favorite. What say you?

Had the Carbonara pizza last night at the new Pizzeria Sassano in So. Glastonbury. Excellent.
