I’m the opposite. Hate Torpedo. Don’t like Stone stuff either. Can’t tolerate all that bitterness. The real key to the New England style is that you get the actual hop flavor profiles rather than just bitterness, because most aren’t added to the boil. So much more variety.West Coast IPA. New England “juicy” IPA is clingy, grapefruity, floral.
Give me Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. Hophead Heaven.
Hazy Little Things were a revelation. Little 12oz hop grenades.I’m the opposite. Hate Torpedo. Don’t like Stone stuff either. Can’t tolerate all that bitterness. Fortunately we can all drink what we like.
I stopped going out of my way lookinig for Marzens years ago. We're lucky in Pgh to have Penn Brewery, which is more or less a traditional German-style brewery, although it does some newer stuff at times. Very good Marzen, no need to look around. We also have one of three Hofbrauhaus locations in the US, and they have tanks of the stuff come September. Absolutely no need to check out the microbreweries to sate that particular style. How are the Oktoberfests going for you folks? Alvarium Hedwig was great and Firefly Hollow's was a very good Marzen. I'm not a huge Norbrook Brewing fan but their Okt was pretty decent as well. Sierra's Oktoberfest is again a collaboration with Brauerei Gutmann and is always good.
They all wrapped up a few weeks ago around here (metro-west Mass/northern RI). Missed most of them. I got the Lawson's Fest beer and pronounce it to be quite good. Neighbor gave me a Spaten the other day, obviously good. How are the Oktoberfests going for you folks? Alvarium Hedwig was great and Firefly Hollow's was a very good Marzen. Damn, dude. You patrol this page? No.
You need to buy a table.
I would have liked to have gotten to Bend... I did see that place for sureWas out in Oregon and found this:
(It is probably somewhere in this thread already)
Wolfsbane is fantastic. Their Octoberfest was great too. The Warden is a former co-worker of one of the owners and we have been invited to a private soft-opening of the new spot on Bank Street. I'll take pics.My fave brewery in CT is Tox Brewing in New London. They will soon explode into a larger space down the street. Today is my last visit to the comfy current space. Pictured, my last pour here. The Wolfsbane oatmeal stout. So good.View attachment 104514
Your list starts and ends with these two:So, I'll be up in CT over the weekend and there's a good chance Saturday afternoon is free.
I'll be staying up around the Storrs area.
What breweries should I hit up or what are some good beers to try out I could find in stores?
Treehouse Charlton isn't far from Storrs either. The Woodstock location evidently has terrible ciders. What beers do they have?Your list starts and ends with these two:
Fox Farm Brewery, Salem
Treehouse Farm & Fermentory, Woodstock
I know that you know that draft and cans are updated daily at treehousebrew.com, just like they are for all TH locations.Treehouse Charlton isn't far from Storrs either. The Woodstock location evidently has terrible ciders. What beers do they have?
Never been to Woodstock. The only comments I got about it from a big, big beer guy (who works at Trillium) were that the ciders suck (too tart/sour). That was two weeks ago.I know that you know that draft and cans are updated daily at treehousebrew.com, just like they are for all TH locations.
I don’t drink ciders so I really don’t care. Really depends on what Chin wants. big crowds and the Disney experience? Charlton is the answer. If he wants a pour of one of TH’a flagship IPAs or a classic lager and an insanely beautiful setting where he can walk and take in majestic views, with zero crowds… Woodstock is the answer. I’m assuming he’s not borrowing a TH hand truck to ship cases back to Florida.Never been to Woodstock. So I checked the page. Yes there's a limited draft beer list and an even more limited can list. They don't have much there. I expect it is because they can't sell what they brew in Charlton outside of Mass. I think Woodstock is limited to what they make on site.
Checked Google Maps. UConn to Treehouse Woodstock 34 minutes. UConn to Treehouse Charlton 35 minutes. So @Chin Diesel just go to Charlton. It's pretty epic.
This is why I go to Sandwich, but that would be a haul for him.I don’t drink ciders so I really don’t care. Really depends on what Chin wants. big crowds and the Disney experience?
