2025 Transfer Portal - UConn Interest Only

Dig it.

Small guard at 6'0, but he is versatile enough to be a pure PG (14th highest assist rate in the nation, 2.5 A:TO), but shoots well enough from deep (39%) to play off ball and is also capable at getting to the rim (347th highest FTRate nationally). He can be the backup PG and also play alongside Demary. If Demary even gets hurt, Smith would easily slot in as the starting PG.
What's interesting that I noticed, as I am sure you and others have noticed, is that Georgia is the other school having a Zoom call with Malachi. Hmmm......

I think there is a good chance Silas could be the host on the call along with the coaches and perhaps assist with the coaches on convincing Malachi to choose UConn over Georgia.

Lol what if we took both of Georgia's point guards
IIRC, Georgia "stole" Mike White from Florida. Florida was dumping White to replace him with Todd Golden. How did that work out (minus a few co-eds)?

Just one of those weird rivalry scenarios. In Georgia's and White's defense, they have recruited well and done far better under White. Hard to get over the hump when you can't keep foundational players like Silas Demery though.

Malachi didn't have a very good game against us (but Posh certainly did!)
The good news for him is that he wouldn't have to play us again! He would get to face Marquette again (11 assists, one turnover - although he shot 3-10).

Maybe he's not exactly a perfect fit - on defense, especially - but I like the idea of a guard like this who can simply get us into offense on a day when maybe Demary is bothered by ball pressure (or just having an off night). Or also on a day when Demary has his shot going and he can play more off the ball for some possessions.

Smith has to like the idea of that role. Kimani is on record as telling Demary "there goes my point guard" - so Smith would have to want to have national championship aspirations as a reserve, as opposed to showcasing his skills as a starter somewhere. The fact he's on a Zoom at least means he's not opposed to the idea.

Regardless of Alex staying or leaving, still need a solid big who can play tje 4/5 for 15-20 mpg.

Can't go in to the season with Alex or Stew being the second biggest guy on the roster.
Luckily neither Alex nor Jaylin will be the second biggest guy on our roster

Is Reibe chopped liver? He’s supposed to be the backup C.

First Furphy then Adams now Reibe. I vowed not to complain about returning players being recruited over but recruiting over incoming frosh is different

Do you think you know better than the staff? If we're recruiting a guard it means someone isn't ready. And I would imagine the kid is aware of the plan for their development.

I have a really good feeling about Malachi Smith, I hope the staff can sell him on the minutes being there even if it's off the bench. We know he loves UConn, and he's choosing to have a zoom with the staff knowing our roster situation and after visiting schools with starting spots available. So I think it's possible

With Mullins Reibe and Adams being 13,26 and 32 composite on 247 I looked back at a five year period of those exact numbers from a few years ago to see good the players were

32- udeh (bust, pleased 8 minutes a game as a freshman), reid (bust, transferred twice, played 20 minutes a game as a freshman), dawson Garcia (beena beast for 5 years in college, played 30 minutes a game as a freshman), dj carton (left for nba after 2 years, played 25 a game as a freshman), moses brown (1 and done) Median outcome is Dawson Garcia IMO

26 – JHS (1 and done), nate bittle (beast as upperclassman, 6 mpg as a freshman), lander(bust), lamelo ball (nba star immediately), coby white (1 and done) Median outcome is coby white? 1 and done

13 – mitchell (27 minutes a game as a freshman at duke), quentin grimes (27 minutes a game as a freshman, nba player) scoot/suggs/mcdaniels- all one and done/or skipped college
Median outcome is Mcdaniels? another awesome 1 and done

I saw this all just to mean that if these guys end up around a median outcome we are looking at three awesome players who are gonna play high 20 minutes as freshman and go to the NBA after 1 or 2 years

I’d be ecstatic to land Smith. Him and Demary would be a huge win for the staff in upgrading our guard spot

Our hit rate when guys take an OV is better than anyone in the country. Get him on campus and let Kimani do his thing

Course not. On board with every move they make I’m arguing about how posters interpret the moves and youre booting Adams from the rotation why cant he still get 5-10mpg and the transfer 15-20? And there hasn’t been any contact from staff with a backup big that would project around 15-20mpg either, I’m disagreeing with posters saying that’s a need when we have Reibe

Danny is not going to have all of the freshmen in the rotation. Just not in his DNA.

I think Reibe has nothing to worry about, though. He’s gonna play. (He’s gotta play.)

There is a lot more to the Malachi equation than just whether is a starter or not. There is fit on a lot of levels and we have a record of getting backup guards good minutes (see Hass). There is good familiarity here. If we get a visit pretty quickly after the zoom…. You know the drill.

Hate to bring this up, and unfair to the kid who fully bought into the program. But, if we had Smith rather than Mahaney, our prospects/seeding would have been a good bit higher.

So unfortunate that the staff missed on him, because we all though Aidan would work well. But BE is a different thing. Self correction for next season seems to be quite evident.

Adams happily committed knowing the Mullins was going to be there and Nowell was supposed to be the Sophomore point guard. Still, Adams was sold on the plan.
I think when Adams commited the PG rotation was projected to be Mahaney and Nowell now it’s Silas and maybe Smith so either way hope he’s happy as third string.

Was Adams recruited as a PG? I never thought of him as a PG in high school and none of the recruiting services have him listed as a PG. 247Sports has him as a CG but all the others have him as a SG.

He’s sort of a combo…has said he will play both. Listed as a SG but handles the ball alot in high school. I think the coaches saw Tristen when watching him. That being said, I don’t think he can be our primary backup PG year one. Thus, the Malachi interest.

As for Reibe, yes, he will play, but I also think we need to recruit another big as a “just in case” big guy. Should be able to find a dude in the portal willing to accept that role. If a younger player, can also sell him on the fact that a lot more minutes will open up in 26-27 when Tarris is gone.
