Does a school being "under investigation" really matter anymore? All the schools can legally pay their players if they want. What rule is there to break?

Timeline: ASU football fallout amid investigation into recruiting violations
The Arizona State Sun Devils' 2021 football season was played under a dark, looming cloud that looks to have turned into a full-blown storm.arizonasports.com
This one may actually be a bigger deal than most other "normal" NCAA violations because they did it during the pandemic.
These early firings are more about getting someone new in place ASAP so the new coach can hit the ground running in recruiting. At least, that was the original justification I saw.
Exactly. With the portal and NIL, you fire the old coach when it becomes obvious it ain't working and take a month or two at most to name the next head coach so you can show we're open for business and to prime the booster/NIL machine. These early firings are more about getting someone new in place ASAP so the new coach can hit the ground running in recruiting. As someone posted above, Nebby has more money than Jesus.
Reportedly the big donors pushed Frost's firing and the school went for it because they hated the optics of playing Oklahoma on national tv and having the Frost death watch be the main story.
Instead, they got to watch OU curbstomp them without Frost.
And pls don't reply this doesn't make much sense. It's Nebby. Delusion is a foundational piece of their football program by now.

The real problem with firing your coach in September
If you're ready to fire the guy after just three weeks...why didn't you fire him last year? Isn't this just the worst of both worlds?www.extrapointsmb.com
Makes complete sense. They can blame the demolishing by OK on the "interim" staff and the Frost debacle. It basically puts all the blame on Frost and takes any blame from Nebraska on why OK has been so much better than them for the better part of what? 3 decades now?As someone posted above, Nebby has more money than Jesus.

Former Boise St. coaches moving up the food chain have a fairly brutal track record. Petersen at Washington is the only one I can think of who was reasonably successful, and even that was a bit up and down and ended totally abruptly. What a weird game against Missouri...does Harsin keep his job? Can you fire him after a win?
Keep an eye on Colorado. They’re in a tough place w buyout for Dorrell but the natives are super restless and his three year record is brutal
They fired Frost when they did partially to give him the extra money because he was a favored son who led them to a natty. Also, it shows other prospective coaches that they aren't cheap... It was more than just a dollars and cents decision. Which is smart because it will be difficult for them to get a top tier coach nowadays.
I hear what you're saying but there is a vein of desperation in Nebraska because gone are the days when they can roll out of bed and recruit 4 and 5 star players. They have B1G money, so clearly they're not worried about dollars and cents and they fill their stadium so preserving that and booster money makes overall fiscal sense. They are in a different set of circumstances than almost any other program in America. This explanation only makes the firing worse. Nebraska is a public school so that is effectively taxpayer money. Paying Frost that much money as a solid for a long relationship is unacceptable.
It is possible that Nebraska would have won its next three games if Frost had not gotten canned when he did. Indiana and Rutgers suck, and the Syracuse game appears to have broken Purdue. The Administration paying $7.5 million to avoid the chance that Frost goes on a 3 game winning streak is a possibility, although honestly, a 7-5 or 6-6 season that would have resulted in Frost getting fired at the end anyway is a lot better than what could happen under an interim coach.
That $7.5 million could just be the beginning of what it will cost Nebraska if the wheels really come off. If Nebraska goes 2-10 or 1-11, it will cost a fortune to get a top coach to come to Lincoln, and a lot of coaches won’t take the job.
Taking over a mediocre program is one thing, stepping into a dumpster fire that could get gutted by the transfer portal is quite another.
Nebraska's athletic department is run separately from the university (they have their own financials) and the university does not contribute to athletics. The way they run the department is kind of unique in college sports which is why they could dump Frost the way they did without bearing the wrath of the state politicians. Scholarships are covered by the athletic department, not the university. And, the athletic department pays the university for some administrative support. This explanation only makes the firing worse. Agreed - they know their relative place in the current world order. With almost 400 consecutive home sellouts they are as rabid as almost any fanbase.Nebraska fans don’t think they should be winning NCs each season. But they do think they should be competitive for B1G championships.
Desperation yes. Delusion, I don’t think so.
I hope we kick the tires at least. This guy is legit as a DC at the very leastCollins was DC at Florida and Mississippi State. Would we consider bringing him in as a defensive consultant for a stint this season?
