This thread is a thing of beauty, in a rambling insane kind of way. Have to wonder whether it will reach the "ACC" thread level of epicness.

i check occassionally to see how that one's doing. i only actually read a post every few days but it's amazing that it's still going on and nothing new of any value has been added to either thread since about page 4. there should be a policy of deleting any thread once it hits a certain length. more often than not it's two or three people that just won't something go and more often than not they're not even arguing the same point.

People feel strongly about PSU scandal even though their positions may not always be grounded. But the material itself is so disgusting, it lends itself to flying off the handle.

JoPa knew, the president of the university knew, everyone including the janitors knew and yet, the university community itself seems to just want it over without paying any price.

I kind of felt the way early on, but the thread has grown on me.

Student newspaper just swept the national awards because they've been proscribing penalties for a long time, as have the students and faculty. I think it's only sports fans that are harping on football, whereas most of the university community has bigger fish to fry. In case you haven't noticed, all this information is coming from PSU's investigation.

Agreed on all counts, except I don't know the tone of the university community, so I'm not going to offer an opinion on that. I think equally, because of the heinous nature of what happened, some outsiders also want to pile on the punishments from anyone and everyone that could feasibly punish the university, even if there may not be actual basis on which they can assess punishment, such as the NCAA. I think the NCAA will do a VERY thorough investigation of PSU once the legal system takes its course, and look to see if there was any hush money paid by administrators to outsiders, athletes, or anyone. I think they'll look to try and find violations if they can so they're not perceived as letting PSU get off the hook, but I also don't think they're going to invent new rules arbitrarily just for the sake of punishing them.

I'm agreeing with you. They should now do it like the SEC instead.

What makes you think that players there haven't been getting the same things that players have been getting everywhere else? If nothing else, this situation should show you that Penn State was no better than anyone else, and really worse when it comes down to it. They covered this up for a long time so I am sure they had no problems covering up other stuff.

it's been well known for a long time that JoePa had final say in disciplining his players, and the police allowed him to take care of most things in house. i think most people never would have assumed that it went to this extent, but it's certainly not new they allowed him to sweep things under the rug. at this point i wonder if there's anything JoePa wouldn't cover up. this is about as bad a thing as you can try to sweep under the rug and he didn't seem to have any problems doing it.

Because I taught there with football players in class and went through the pains of filling out multiple reports tracking their progress (I didn't have to, but I did). So I know their operation pretty well.

On some issues, yes. He fought back against student affairs. Against the campus police and town police, no. He had little power. In fact, he took them on time and time again. Paterno actually thought it was alright for his underaged football player to drink beer, and he was repeatedly livid about their open container violations in the dorms. But he had players suspended for a year after two violations (not under his control). So, it depends on who he had influence over. Student affairs, yes. He controlled them. Campus and town police, no.

I can't imagine what awards the student newspaper will receive for unearthing those emails ...

They didn't unearth them. They have broken several elements of the story however, and if you read it, you know what the sentiment is among the student body.

Seeing reports that the Freeh report says that Paterno and Co. knew everything. They just took away Sandusky's keys and notified Sandusky's charity. Can't verify because the website has been overwhelmed and has crashed!

and it is disgraceful and disgusting. Seems everyone, from Paterno to the University President knew what Sandusky was up to and went out of their way to hide the facts in order to protectthe program. My opinion is that Penn State should take the dramatic step and shut the program down for a year and rebuild from the ground up. Say to the world that we are not going to tolerate this any more. Our football program is NOT more important than anything else. Of course they won't do that. But they should. andif they don't the NCAA should do it for them.

It is disgusting, and what's even more disgusting is how their fans rationalize that Joe Paterno is some how absolved of blame because he notified the university of the university did nothing about it. Joe P's statue should be melted down for scrap and use to help pay for all of the lawsuits they will be paying out.

Penn State should face some serious sanctions for this. Lack of institutional control sounds about right.

Questions:

1. What should the NCAA do?

2. What should Penn St do?

3. What should the Big 10 do? They have an enormous PR problem and an enormous TV contract.

4. How long will it take for Penn St to settle civil litigation?

5. Is this report just the beginning or the end?

6. Would you want to see UConn do a home and home with them? If they did, would you attend or stay away if they were at The Rent?

Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno and other top university officials acted with "total disregard" for the children sexually abused by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky because of their fear of "bad publicity," a report by the university's internal investigation said today.

The report was released at the conclusion of the investigation led by former FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired to find out why officials who knew of child molestation accusations failed to stop Sandusky or report him to police.

The report said that Paterno, along with officials Tim Curley, Gary Schultz, and former president Graham Spanier, "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse from the authorities," and it blamed those four men for failing to stop Sandusky and protect other chidlren from his harm.

It's digusting indeed. I cannot believe that a University would jeopardize the welfare of children in order to maintain a reputation that was obviously built under false pretenses. Penn State was Sandusky's lair. He was allowed to pounce and destroy many lives while the administration turned a blind eye. For his sake, I hope Sandusky is in solitary confinement. If he isn't, he will certainly be Bubba's "old" bitch!!

I was coming here to make the same comment. I guess the answer is, how ever many it takes to get to 20,000.....

I started the first one. Got zero responses. My feelings are hurt. Need to go see my shrink.
