Who's your list for next HC?

It would be wildly shortsighted to not consider what happens next into your calculus.

Is Spanos the right guy to be the next guy? I haven't the slightest clue. The resume is good. Let's watch the performance and behave accordingly...
I did. He better be a miracle worker, and a few wins and modest improvement isn't nearly enough to account for his lack of high level work with regard to running a program, not just coaching.

DB will likely pursue morehead like he did Hurley. He can throw a good salary out there. UCONN is not broke financially. They can always find money for what interests them. It is political. Could go Breiner, Harcymiak Chesney at the 1 mil range because that is what they are currently worth.

Go for broke. Call Peyton and Eli :)

Shoot.. get Brees up here for the Purdue game and butter him up with apple cider donuts and pizza.

If your going to "butter him up" , I suggest enticing him with UConn Dairy Bar Ice Cream instead!...lol

One aspect to the football leadership that we've never done but I think we should consider is that of a Special Advisor. Before some of you laugh it off, give it some thought.... The last time we spun the coaching carousel, I offered up the idea of having Tedy Bruschi somehow on the staff. I've just come to learn that University of Arizona did just that this year. Smart move.

We need someone to assist through this year of turmoil and into the next regime and then possibly ongoing to assist with transition and beyond. Someone smart, candid, connected, etc.

Breiner, Harcymiak Chesney are the types I’d like to see take over, but if (big if) you can get Lashlee or Moorehead you do it. The boosters will need to step up for those 2 and the staff they will bring.

Realistically, my pecking order is to take a shot at Moorhead (would probably require a 5 year contract at $2M+ per year with lots of $$ for the staff). If Moorhead doesn't want the opportunity or is too expensive, Harasymiak stands out as a prime candidate with HC experience and P5 coordinator experience as well as strong local connections. If the focus is a HC that is on the offense side of the ball you have Chesney and Breiner. The guys like Lashlee and Healy simply are not realistic. Lashlee couldn't get out of CT fast enough. If Healy does at Charlotte what he did at Austin Peay he will be an P5 coach in 5 years or less. No need for him to gamble on a UConn rebuilding job.

I think we will get a good feel for Benedict's and the administration's thoughts on the trajectory of the football program based on how much money they can spend on this entire staff turnover. How comfortable are they with BE $$ and the $$ to be made with independent scheduling. Unlike the last change there is lots of time to judge who is truly interested, and maybe more importantly if there is booster interest in helping to bankroll some the the costs

I want the most unsafe hire out there. I'm hearing some people who want like Scott Frost or something. I want an absolute loose cannon at the helm.

After going independent, our program is now at a do or die moment. Any safe choice will just kill us. Not saying we hire a Diaco 2.0, but give me a guy who we might originally might have us scratching our heads, but has the world to prove and wants nothing more but to prove it.

I do not care at all if it is a stepping stone job for the person we hire.

I believe they will go with a big name. The TU/OU move has something to do with the actions that are taking place right now. UCONN needs to be viewed as having great BB and decent football. Contracts will be expiring in the upcoming years. Will Clemson and FSU move?

Andrew Sowder, Kent State OC

Kevin Lynch, Ball State OC

Kevin Johns, Memphis OC

Luke Getsy. Packers QB coach

Breiner did not impress as a head coach at Fordham. Struggled to keep the momentum Moorhead had built and bailed after the team totally collapsed in his second season. Maybe he is older and wiser now, but his head coaching stint at Fordham is a negative on his profile.

Who do you guys like? I don’t think Lashlee bites didn’t seem to love the time here. I’m kinda like the Nunzio pick tbh
Great NJ connections. Successful at Bergen and Bosco. …nationally ranked programs. But he hasn’t been a coordinator at the P5 level. Does it matter?

Luke Getsy would be an incredible hire imo.

37 Years old, former Mississippi St OC, been working under Lafleur in Green Bay, promoted to passing game coordinator. Has a great demeanor. Pitt grad, has some northeast ties.

Definitely not a safe choice, but he could surround himself with some veteran staff and could end up being a home run.

Andrew Sowder? We should just hire Sean Lewis the HC if that’s the case

I feel like UConn is a step down from Kent State at this point. Maybe I'm being a little harsh on the program but idk

No one should be hired for “ties” to anything. PP had “ties” to ct hs coaches. Diaco had “ties” to NJ. Edsall ties are obvious.

I want someone who can coach the ****** out of a football team, particularly on offense. I don’t care where he is from. I want proven track record of objective success.

Get out of here with Nunzio stuff. Guy was 1-7 as interim, and let me tell you, the best from don bosco and Bergan catholic are not coming here. We need someone that can take underrated guys and coach them up. Recruiting stars should not be the focus here, we are not getting stars (at least initially).

I don't see any current or recent FBS HC who's not on Viagra and Lipitor taking this job. And I'd want someone with actual HC experience and a bit of life left in them. So my list starts with Scotty Walden of Austin Peay. To me, he's exactly the mad scientist UConn needs to make games fun again and bring a breath of fresh air to Storrs. Only 30, his offenses are dynamite.

Others I'd consider in addition to Bob Chesney:
  • Brian Bohannon, Kennesaw St. (50)
  • Jay Hill, Weber St. (46)
  • Josh Conklin, Wofford (42)
  • Matt Entz, ND State (48)
  • Scott Abell, Davidson (51)
  • Bob Surace, Princeton (53)
  • Willie Simmons, Florida A&M (40)
  • Troy Taylor, Sacramento St. (53)
  • Bobby Hauck, Montana (57)

If we hire a defensive oriented HC, my next call would be to Ryan McCarthy at CCSU to become OC. I believe McCarthy only makes like $137K as HC there, so doubling his salary might get shake him loose.
Willie Simmons is only 40.. From his resume, if we're looking for more offense, he's a great option... Just don't know if he'll stick around

SEAN SPENCER. Presently, DL coach with the NY Giants. Formerly, Associate Head Coach @ Penn State. Formerly, a huge factor in the rebuilding program @ Vanderbilt. Recognized as one of college football’s outstanding recruiters. Connecticut roots: played @ Bulkeley (teammate of Mangini), coached at Wesleyan & Trinity. Other stops: UMass (mentored by Don Brown), Holy Cross, Bowling Green). Dynamic personality, premiere motivator, incredible work ethic.

UConn can pay 3-4 times what Kent State can afford salary wise, plays a better schedule, isn't stuck behind a paywall, and has signicantly better facilities.
Agree with most things but I think that just because we are playing against better opponents doesn't necessarily mean it is a better schedule. It is hard to recruit when you are independent and playing for essentially nothing

a stepping stone job might be the best we can hope for at this point, that would mean the coach had success and our program isn't dead. Fear of getting stepping stoned shouldn't deter us from hiring the best guy imo
