Penny is a dreadful coach. He’s had some of the best players in the country at Memphis and what does he have to show for it? They just play many times just out of control. When Larry was on the bench (is he still?) he looked frustrated all the time.

Just saw Florida and Ohio play didn’t realize Kenya’s kid Jaylin Hunter transferred from ODU to the Bobcats. Not a bad player, averaging 9.9/3.8/4 this year. Good news is Florida is ripping them up.
On the flip side penny is the one who got those players.

Is this really an argument worth having?

The Penny hate on this board is completely irrational and inaccurate. It is almost like a filter to identify which posters you should read and which ones you can skip.

It would be nice if Oregon didn't pick up a bad loss tonight.

Looks like someone at the SEC offices forgot to pay the refs to fix the games tonight.

Looks like the SEC check cleared in the Auburn game. The last two Auburn "blocks" are felonies in most states.

I always thought that was odd to ding a guy for the most important part of the game, talent acquisition. The one time Penny looked like a terrible coach is the beginning of last year and that was due to culture issues, mostly stemming from landing two top 5 players in August/September immediately prior to the season and giving Bates the keys when he wasn't ready. I am sure he learned a lot from that. There aren't too many scheme geniuses in the game so if you can land elite talent and get them to play hard, you're ahead of 90% of the game. And look, they have another elite class coming in next year.

Wow- Maryland only has 15 points near end of 1st half....crazy.
49-20 at half
Can't recall too many games where the home team absolutely dominated like this

Fox studio host says Maryland has more TO's than FG's at halftime. Jimmy Jackson came back with saying it's tough to score when you aren't scoring buckets on the offensive side of the court. Poignant.

Come on, where else can you get analysis like that? Lol

I don't hate Penny loved him as a player. He's awful, show me his success with great players. And he because he's Penny, good guy has cash, no other reason. It would do me wonders for you to not read my posts, skip them because I watch his teams play out of control, I'm good with that.LOL

His teams may not have made a Final Four, and there are some things he doesn't do great, but playing out of control is not one of their problems.

Yeah it is on offense in general. There is no set up, it’s one on one with kids more interested in showing off their skills (which aren’t always great) rather than playing team ball. It’s obvious he’s not a good coach, good guy but ends there.

It is the opposite. He is overly analytics focused, and the offense has a tendency to burn a lot of shot clock getting the perfect shot. Also, when every shot has to be a layup or a 3 pointer, it makes it easy for the defense to prepare. He is not the only coach that has an imperfect understanding of the statistics behind maximizing points per possession.

That said, Memphis is the 43rd ranked offense in efficiency per KenPom. Not terrible, especially for a team that is not great from 3.

It is a decent team and Hardaway is a decent coach.

UCLA now #4 in KenPom, up from 8.

Maryland now 26, down from 17.
For a high profile high major, lots to like about this UCLA team:
  • They develop talent (five homegrown upperclassmen in the rotation).
    • If you don't enjoy watching seniors Tyger Campbell or Jaime Jaquez, then you don't like college basketball. Just hard working, solid players that are easy to root for.
  • The legacy of Wooden: it's good for college basketball when UCLA is good.
  • I kinda like Cronin doing well at UCLA.
In terms of ceiling, their lack of shooters is concerning (28.0% 3PA/FGA is 22nd lowest in the nation), however their non-bigs are efficient enough shooters (36.9 3p%) to force defenses to respect their spacing.

I think he's referring to them being ranked 308th or worse in turnover rate for the last 3 years, including 351st last year. This year, it's a little better. But I'm personally giving a lot of the credit for this year's improvement to transfer Kendric Davis for being a steady hand at PG who learned outside Penny's system. Davis has the highest TO rate over the last 3 season's of his career this season in Memphis, but it's still low enough to be acceptable. Landers Nolley, for example, has been at 3 schools over 4 years and his 2 worst TO rate years were his 2 years at Memphis. Penny likes to play up-tempo in transition (top 60 in offensive pace all 5 seasons) but his teams tend not to value the ball in transition.
