Penny at mid-major Memphis is a cheater and a dummy and bad coach. When Penny takes an SEC job in a couple of years, the "narrative" will change to him being a basketball genius.

Didn’t realize Frank Haith was an assistant at Memphis now.

He really should have just shook the hand

Alabama reminds me of the 2014 UConn team a bit, not quite as good now but similar make-up.

Memphis played sloppy, dumb basketball.

What a bizarre season we have in store. The year we launch into the sky with Hurley is also a huge rebuilding year for the Big East.

There are so many good coaches in this league, though. It’s just so early in their rebuild (Matta, Miller, Smart). In a couple years time, I expect Butler, Xavier and Marquette to be consistently top 25.
Good call. Will be interesting to see what Halloway does at Seton Hall too

Penny is okay. He gets buy-in on defense. But he has an extremely veteran star point guard and a lot of seniors, so that's going to make him look better (and all his freshmen made him look worse) than he really is as a coach.

They showed a time out on the broadcast where Kendric Davis was meeting with all the coaches separately from all the other players, and then they went out and Kendric set a back screen that led to someone driving for a lay up and got fouled. Seemed like a Kendric initiative but who knows. Their offensive is still a little bit of a mess in the half court. But at least having Kendric in there is limiting their turnovers, which has been the killer for the team for Penny's entire tenure.

Penny is a bit too by-the-book analytics coach for my tastes. This results in some heaves at the end of the shot clock when they can't get the perfect analytics shot, but other than that it is hard to criticize him if people are being intellectually honest. He recruits well, his players get better and he beats good teams. 80% of the P6 coaches might be able to pull off a good season or two at Memphis, but they would quickly fade to mediocrity or worse trying to compete at the highest level out of a mid-major like Memphis. Hardaway has done a very good job there, and the constant criticism of him is just tedious Major Conference-bias.

Since he never played, did he use his one-time free transfer?

He can be our shooting guard with DC,AS, SJ frontline. Why wouldnt we do this?
I don't want to screw with what is clearly working. Sure he scores and rebounds a lot but what if his personality is a minus. Gtown or DePaul can take him

Penny is a dreadful coach. He’s had some of the best players in the country at Memphis and what does he have to show for it? They just play many times just out of control. When Larry was on the bench (is he still?) he looked frustrated all the time.

Just saw Florida and Ohio play didn’t realize Kenya’s kid Jaylin Hunter transferred from ODU to the Bobcats. Not a bad player, averaging 9.9/3.8/4 this year. Good news is Florida is ripping them up.

You can't get upset at Jackson State for playing crazy, because I am sure that is how they got to this point in the game, but they are playing crazy.

On the flip side penny is the one who got those players.

Is this really an argument worth having?

The Penny hate on this board is completely irrational and inaccurate. It is almost like a filter to identify which posters you should read and which ones you can skip.

It would be nice if Oregon didn't pick up a bad loss tonight.

Looks like someone at the SEC offices forgot to pay the refs to fix the games tonight.

Looks like the SEC check cleared in the Auburn game. The last two Auburn "blocks" are felonies in most states.

I always thought that was odd to ding a guy for the most important part of the game, talent acquisition. The one time Penny looked like a terrible coach is the beginning of last year and that was due to culture issues, mostly stemming from landing two top 5 players in August/September immediately prior to the season and giving Bates the keys when he wasn't ready. I am sure he learned a lot from that. There aren't too many scheme geniuses in the game so if you can land elite talent and get them to play hard, you're ahead of 90% of the game. And look, they have another elite class coming in next year.
