Jackson, who averaged 8.1 points and 26 minutes per game as a freshman, met with Ollie after last season and wanted to know what the plan was for him to be able to develop into more than just a spot-up shooter.

"Get in the gym," Ollie said, according to a source close to Jackson.

Perfect question from a player, especially a freshman at the end of year meeting.

Less than perfect response

We don't know it's not the perfect answer right? I mean if the kid went home immediately after every practice and never stayed to work on his game like the real good ones, dedicated ones then absolutely its the right answer.

Shouldn't have played 26 min a game then lol

Yeah seemed like a fine answer to me

New Mexico State Alum here who watched plenty of UNM games. Vance doesn’t play defense/hung on the perimeter and took some of the worst shots you’ll see. There’s a no way in hell Jackson and Hurley would coexist.

I loved watching UNM implode with that traitor Paul Weir at the helm. Couldn’t happen to a better guy.

Yep, zero chance.

You know what, if there was an opening and given that he’s a one year rental, I would not be opposed.

But this won’t happen.

That New Mexico program imploded exactly on schedule, didn’t it?

Seriously? He's too slow to play the way Hurley wants, he doesn't defend well enough to play for Hurley and he showed no interest in putting the team first. He'd be an awful fit here.

Is he a division 1 player? Yes. But I can't see it working, even as a one year rental deep on the bench.

I watched UNM games 4 times this past season
The kid has actually regressed since his UConn day - absolutely zero defense and didn't hesitate to shoot every time he touched the ball
The last game I watched in late February vs UNLV, his team mates appeared to refuse to get him the ball

His freshman year here he was so out of shape and then played well and got a little quicker once he got in shape towards the end of the season. Did he at least get in shape at new mexico?

Kind of makes one wonder what they told him at New Mexico to get him there and how the year end conversation went this year.
Three years of stats, with UConn first:
Points went from 8 to 12.3 to 10.6 over his career.
2 PT % went from 40.7 to 39.3 to 41.3 and,
3 PT % went from 39.7 to 31.8 to 34.9.
It sure looks as if Ollie's response wasn't the (sole) problem, and I'm not an Ollie apologist. Sometimes the player has to look in the mirror (and not see Dad).

Reminds me of one of the youtube strength guys who was going over questions from subscribers. One was what to do 'cause can't jump high enough. Guy said usually people want some exotic, gimmick thing like strength shoes for jumping higher. His answer was "don't come to me to ask about this unless you spent your time under the bar (meaning barbell) and can squat twice your weight". Seems like similar answer, before we start talking about arm angle, pivot moves, etc. get in the gym and put some time in playing, shooting, lifting etc. so you have some skills to build on.
