Men UConn Baseball and the transfer portal

It’s early but if those two hitting portal could be a pretty substantial makeover of the roster. Portal hasn’t officially opened but if I were to guess there will be a substantial amount that will follow

Daugherty and Macarthur both had good years and were playing most of the time, and would presumably be playing every day next year. Why would they be looking?

I wouldn’t call either of them “made men”. They had struggles at points in the year. Maybe they want more of a guarantee for ABs next year, maybe they want to be closer to home. I don’t see either of them as moving to a bigger program that can pay them. Both are good ballplayers, but one has little power, the other has power, but not enough to anchor a 1B/Dan Hurley spot.

I am assuming all of this is legit and their intention is to leave from this thread. Nice players, solid contributors.

I didn't think the team was that far off. Pitching seemed to be the main problem with injuries and guys like Cooke and Gabe not being the pitchers we thought they would be. No ace on the staff.

Injuries, short term and long term also affected UConn position players as well. Late in the season there just were not that many players who were available off the bench.

Except for the top of the order, everything seemed mediocre

Position bench players was basically limited to 1 utility player, 1 OF and a back up catcher.

Pitching was narrowed down to just a few bullpen guys who could get outs. Pudvar stepped up as the ace but removed him from a solid bullpen role. Shaw filled that void and then some. But the GVE and Cooke situation was a snowball effect. Early season injuries to arms reduced depth and squeezed us even more.

Suchy seemed poised to join Pudvar as a dependable starter but then was injured. That really hurt. Tommy was too inconsistent.

Penders can’t be happy with much. Maybe wants start over.
That was the best hitting team we’ve had in years. Both those players were good enough to start every game this year (but we had 10 who were for 9 slots) and with improvement would presumably not be worse next year. Taking apart the lineup because the pitching was horrific doesn’t make a lot of sense.

one of the best offenses ever IMO. If their starting pitching wasn't so brutal to start the year this team could have made a run. Pudvar,West and Suchy next year is a nice starting rotation....Hopefully

Abbadessa, Wolff, Conte,Galusha,Groen,Norrell, Dougherty,Worzel, Taylor, Hector and Ellisen are all in the portal now
Kids who redshirted going in the portal is interesting to me. I thought Groen got hurt early on but with the starting outfield gone or in the portal, there should be opportunity.

The rest of the pitchers outside of Hector and Ellisen were young but got cuffed around pretty good. I wonder if a conversation with Coach Mac pushed things along.

Funny thing, I was looking at this website this morning, and only 4 UConn players were listed at that time. Now all these players are listed on that website.
Depends on how you search… if you go to the alphabetical running list by school there are there - if you search by “previous school” - Connecticut > only four.

If there are a lot of pitchers being pushed out, I wouldn't be surprised. But as college athletics continue to evolve, we shouldn't assume that folks that enter the portal are all set on leaving. Some are seeing if there is a better situation elsewhere, some are seeking leverage for their deal with UConn. Time will tell.

Yes, from what I have seen in previous years, some players that are in the portal don't always leave their old team. We will see what happens this time around.
