Men UConn Baseball and the transfer portal

According to the D1Baseball.com Transfer Portal listings, Chris Brown is transferring to USC.

Okay… Southern California or South Carolina. D1 Portal uses both in addition to USC.

The D1Baseball.com Transfer Portal listings also use UConn on occasion in addition to their regular use of Connecticut.

Just noticed that Levi McAllister is listed as transferring from UConn to Albany, which was reported a while ago on this thread. Also, Cameron Mayer is listed twice in his transferring from Tufts, one listing him transferring to Connecticut and another to UConn.

Noah Sorensen was a redshirt freshman on the UConn baseball roster last season. He has transferred to Long Island University, he is on their baseball roster for the coming season.

LIU plays an exhibition game in Storrs on October 6. So it is possible Noah Sorensen will make a final appearance at UConn on that day.

College baseball is certainly a sport where many players end up transferring to other schools. UConn baseball certainly has its share of players who transfer to other schools as well. Still, the grand majority of UConn baseball players who transfer to other schools did not get much significant playing time while they were in Storrs. The exceptions seem to be the odd grad transfers who leave Storrs. Still, are the odd few grad transfers such as Kevin Ferrer who occasionally leave. Still, it is very rare for a significant UConn baseball player to transfer and play for another school. Overall, UConn baseball seems to benefit much more from players transferring into the program rather then leaving the program to transfer to play at another school.

D1baseball.com has started up its 2024 Transfer Portal listing on its website as of December 1. So far no UConn players are listed in this list.

I should note that I've noticed in the past that the D1baseball.com Transfer Portal listings don't have a complete listing of everyone who is transferring to another school, but it is still a good resource for confirming many transfers.

UConn Redshirt freshman RHP Ryan VanDeWater, who did not play in any games this season (he may have been recovering from an injury from the previous season), is now listed in the D!Baseball.com transfer portal tracker.

UConn sophomore OF Drew Kron is now listed in the D1Baseball.com transfer portal tracker. I liked what I saw of him when he played for Norwich in summer ball a couple of years ago when he was coming out of high school.

Hate to lose homegrown talent but he had his chances to breakthrough…

Yes he did have his chances.

When Kron played in Norwich, I thought he had great speed which he put to very good use on defense and when he was on base. I thought if his bat could improve some, he could become quite a player. Oh well.

Thought there was some serious potential in Tommy but her barely pitched and when he did it was as low leverage as you can get. Best of luck to him still believe in his potential.

RHP Tommy Turner is now in the transfer portal

I looked at the D1baseball.com transfer portal listing yesterday, and Turner was not in it at that time. This morning Turner showed up in it.

Based on the videos I’ve seen of him pitching before UConn, and the small sample size at UConn, I think this is a fella who will need to learn how to harness his stuff. Which is a euphemism of course for throw the ball over the plate.

With the new addition of Turner, UConn baseball now has 5 players listed in this thread in the 2024 transfer portal. We will see if that changes again.

I hope the lesson being learned in recruiting high schoolers is to have some balance between feel to pitch guys and these spinrate/velo products coming out of Driveline. Not specifically referring to Turner, but they had a whole crew of young guys who couldn’t command a fastball and/or got hurt.

I think this is a bigger issue than just UConn but agreed on the point. In general there is a big emphasis in the sport on metrics like velo and spin rate but you are right on that it doesn’t always translate. Need to take a more nuanced approach to HS recruiting, which I think UConn is trying to do
