What would it take to get him out of there, a bump up to head seat somewhere or is he a career assistant?
 
When your head coach is your beginning and ending recruiting guy - you have a problem. It's nice to have a UConn tradition in the coaching staff but we have overkill! Just like in a company you need to go outside sometimes to get new ideas / perspectives and talent.
 
We do need a big time recruiter, if our conference situation wasn't what it is it wouldn't be so necessary but we need one badly. I suspect Ollie realizes this too and it will be dealt with.

Hobbs was the lead recruiter for Rip, KEA, Caron, etc. on his first go round. Then he had some success as a head coach (unlike Slice, for example). I have a hard time believing he's not capable of making a recruiting visit any more.

We are really in our first year of recruiting right now with Ollie as an established head coach. Before we were asking recruits to take a leap of faith that he'd be able to take the reins. A little more patience is needed.

Going outside for an assistant right now would mean firing someone (and Miller isn't a recruiter so that wouldn't do much if you have your eyes on him). Companies don't have NCAA restrictions getting in the way of hiring "consultants".
 
The sad truth is most high school kids don't really care about winning National Championships. They would rather go somewhere where they can fast track to the NBA or have a blast. Winning is a secondary benefit. They don't want to hear coaches talk about "team" or learning from upperclassmen. This is the iPhone instant gratification generation. That's the only thing that I can find to explain our lack of recruiting success after winning national championships.

This is a nice rationalization that I hear repeated on here quite a bit but I think it's 100% nonsense.

How about we play in an absolutely moribund conference and/or don't have an ace recruiter on staff?

Any recruit that watches current rendition of sledteam would run to the hills to get far away. The brand of ball is the farthest thing away from having fun. It is an epic struggle with a bunch of no names who at best are single skilled and that is a stretch in some cases. Plus a coach who preaches defense defense defense defense and more defense via the steps, which is exactly what real talents disdain. They just want to bury you in an avalanche and to them defense means waiting around until the ball comes your way to continue the avalanche. When I played I just wanted to bury you with an onslaught of daggers and breaks and bank shots on the fly. Defense? Yeah, right. I sez to my coach:fungool; defense makes coaches rich; real playas are not into making coaches rich, sorry.

If this is your talking point then I dont want you at Uconn... Your supposed to be the entertainment, your there too ball... If it was nicki minajjjj though...... I might understand:rolleyes:
 
It really is hard to believe that coming off a 4th NC and Ollie and the team getting all that great pub that UConn only has a 2 man class at this point. I like Adams and Enoch a lot, but the coaches need to really up their game for next year. (I'm assuming, of course, that Diamond Stone ain't coming. If he commits, well that changes everything).
 
It's so nice that we all have all the answers.

How about it's not an easy fix when:
  • You've been hamstrung by targeted NCAA penalties and need to be more selective than ever, especially with marginal academic stuff and transfer risks that could tank the APR;
  • You are trying to gain admission to the AAU to improve your conference affiliation;
  • For two decades you've recruited from an increasing position of strength as the best program in the best conference, with an unequaled NCAA Championship and NBA track record during that time; and
  • You are now the most academically rigorous university in a sh it conference, in the northeast corner of a Northeastern state that is known neither for its weather nor stimulating/cosmopolitan environment.
I'd love to hear of another university in our position that is killing it on the recruiting trail. The reason you don't is because there is no other university in our position. There is no one I know who disputes that UConn is--by far--the university that got screwed the worst in conference realignment. So it's easy to point out all the distinctions with other schools precisely for the reason that none of them is in the same position we are.

But, we are we are. We need to adapt. Recruiting is a different game than when JC first came here, and our expectations are much, much higher. But instead of being the kingpin in the kingpin conference, now we're yesterday's kingpin in a crappy conference with an uncertain future. And we have the highest academic standards in that conference. And we need to keep our APR and AAU accreditation on track. And we're not in New Orleans, Florida or Memphis, all of which might be more attractive to lots of kids--as may be VCU, which I acknowledge has done pretty well for itself (show me some rings and I'll start gushing...).

I'm not quite sure what makes someone an ace recruiter except results. And results are a lot easier to achieve when you are selling what people are buying. I mean, what difference do you think anyone else would be able to make given our circumstances?

I think handing a recruit an envelope stuffed with cash is somewhat beneath us.

So we'll put the envelopes inside the iPad boxes and just have the escorts leave it on the kid's bed.

Kinda got a laugh out of this - I think we can be pretty sure that our assumed pursuit of an AAU invitation is not a current impediment to recruiting.

I could be wrong but I'm assuming that some part of the accreditation process at least considers the academic rigor of the institution. My only point there is really just a continuation of the first point: i.e., we have higher academic standards than many of our competitors, we've already been targeted, and we're on the outside looking in with respect to both the AAU and a more preferred conference, so we have to try to keep our noses even cleaner.

For example, UNC's decades of paper classes will not threaten its ACC membership; but the same type of thing here would make us an even less attractive candidate for admission to both the AAU and a better conference.

I'm also assuming cash payments to recruits is not going to help.
 
There isn't one simple catch-all reason that explains everything. Mack and Clarke may have seen a questionable route to playing time with a better recruit at their position a year ahead of them (and Omar), Dorsey might have preferred not to travel east (and/or could be lukewarm about playing with Hamilton again after they had a rocky last season together, even though his dad said they were good friends), Briscoe might have simply been a Kentucky or bust guy, Jones may have been us backing off a bit with grades, and Newman might have simply looked at our schedule and decided that he was too good to play road games at East Carolina and Tulsa (which could be a recurring issue going forward for the top top guys). Or a million other reasons.

Our initial recruiting efforts have allowed us to close with four - but two later reopened. Adams was huge to fill our biggest need, and maybe we'd have had a better shot at Mack if he had a chance to see how much we need his shooting, but that's the way the recruiting calendar has always been so that's just idle whining. Now we probably have to look for a diamond in the rough shooter in the spring, ala Brimah when we needed a big. Or hope Omar keeps going as he's going and Purvis/Hamilton get better.

As for our staff, maybe Hobbs doesn't relate to the younger generation as well as he once did, but he's a proven recruiter. I honestly have no idea what the inner workings of the staff are to give an opinion, but if he can't do it at the level we need then maybe he can replace Howie when he retires and we can open up a search. Miller is in the Blaney role and doesn't recruit, and Ricky is the bottom rung assistant cutting his teeth.

We had Ray Allen, a future hall of famer. I'm sure recruits think it's cool to see Drake, but I'm also sure seeing Ray Allen was pretty cool for the 10+ recruits we had at first night.

Vance Jackson, VJ King, Mario Kegler. All bigtime recruits at the SF position, and all of them have shown pretty good interest in Uconn. Given the need at that position with Calhoun's departure next year, and with Hamilton a decent bet to be gone before his senior year, I think one of these 3 will look at the huge amounts of playing time, and realize this is a great opportunity.

Most useless product ever. Any time I dump a packet of that stuff in to my coffee it goes straight to the bottom. I'm convinced it's not really even real cane sugar.

It's not. It just fools people.

Unfortunately, if you want to kick sugar, the only real alternatives taste horrible in coffee. Real natural stevia leaves, honey, and maple syrup. All the rest are cons, or are best of minimal health benefit. Some are even worse than sugar, like Agave. Tastes horrible and it's worse for you.

If you need to put sugar or any other sweetener in your coffee you either don't like coffee or you are drinking crap coffee, which is what I consider Charbucks.
