Think it was the NCAA site that I saw it, but Duke was ranked at 18th in total defense.
They’ve played Elon, Northwestern and UConn so far. No offense, but not murderd row. If they’re 18th in a few weeks, that’ll be a different story.
We are starting to look we did in the good years of the BE. Hard running, good receivers and a hard hitting D. What hasn’t happened yet is a QB proven he can succeed against that caliber of competition. Hoping it happens soo.

Duke has a very good defense because of Manny Diaz. The improvement we saw from Evers should be enough to give him and Mora confidence in continuing with him for the season.
I am impressed with his improved running ability.

Once Duke starts playing teams like GA Tech their defense stats will go down significantly. Duke is a bad FBS team this year.

Mobility of the QB helps with passing game because it forces the defense to either blitz or have a spy
But Duke adjusted. Load the box and force Evers to throw. Take away option 1 and Evers so far cannot look off option 1 in the pass game

I talked to this guy at the car wash. He said Evers is starting because he is distantly related to a good friend of coach Mora’s. You heard it here first

Did the car wash guy have any connections to Big12?
Am I wrong thinking ‘Car Wash’ was like 10 years ago?

Maybe Dan O can take a break from making commercials and help out the QB’s.
Dan is a pretty busy guy. Besides his GEICO commercial with Laura Rutledge, he is seen on ESPN NFL Today and SportsCenter as well as guest appearances on shows like Dan Patrick. Personally, I love that he gets this exposure.

I’d love to see Welliver get some snaps. Come on Jim. :)
Welliver played some against Merrimack. He did seem to be more comfortable in the pocket than McDonald (who also saw time in that game) and was very accurate with the few passes he threw.

One thing that was alarming was how out and out skinny he appeared. I am fully confident that he is our future but he will need to pack on a couple of pounds or he'll get broken in half

Got some more bad news for you... 20 minutes was more than 20 minutes ago too.
...but it's still 20 minutes from now.

Evers has a high ceiling but he has many skills he needs to improve significantly in order to come close to reaching it like better and quicker decision making, accuracy, footwork, anticipation, timing, field vision, staring down his primary (only, in his case) option. I just hope we win games while he gains the reps and coaching necessary to refine those skills.
Two questions. Only asking here because you raise both points. 1. Evers has a high ceiling compared to who, and what are those indicators of high ceiling (while performing rather poorly). 2. With so much to improve what is he good at?

the only thing we can be sure of is he hasn't been getting first team reps in practice until he got to UConn. He's had time to work on throwing accuracy and physical skills. What that means and what's left for him to grow on, i really do not know. Maybe mora thinks his reads can get better? I don't know.

I believe we’re seeing more NIL logic and less of ceilings and football-only barometers. Giving Evers the legit opportunity to grow is understandable and he deserves it, but if the NIL bag has any play in this then I would cut my losses and eat the NIL already spent and see if Welliver or others are the ones to give Uconn a 2-3 year period of an established D1 quarterback who can win you games himself, and primarily as a passer. Down 4 with 35 seconds to go on my own 30, I want a pocket passer every time. Just an opinion.

Its not the school's NIL to cut, its the donors NIL to cut.

1. best physical tools (live arm, athleticism) among our QBs. I'd say the first 2 drives in the 3rd quarter vs Duke is a decent indicator (5-5, 76 yds, 1 td and 3 rushes, 29 yds)
2. Most of his issues are fixable, and some of them will improve simply with more reps in Sammis offense

yes, but its not like Mora has control on that money which is the point. Its not easily swappable
I agree with you regarding Mora’s position and that’s my issue with NIL and college sports now.

I believe coaches will have say in the players they want to see paid (recruited) but as far as if/when/and how much they play, is no longer solely a coaching decision. Sad. It’s the equivalent of analytics overtaking MLB baseball. The managers are middle men or communication relayers. Mora is in a tough spot.

I think the issue is Mora has not shown he can identify QB talent. He took a swing at a player that was highly rated in high school but has not played since High School. Similar to Robinson. It is much better to take a QB in the portal that has actually played college football. I think the issue is 2 fold. UConn does not have the NIL to go after QBs with football experience at college level and UConn has no track record developing college QBs. It does not help that UConn does not have a proven OC that could attract high caliber QB either.

#1 is a great point. #2 may happen, and we will find out
