The Official 2025 New York Mets thread

Kind of surprised Hefner is gone, but the pitching was bad enough that something had to happen

Me too. Surprised they chopped him so quickly. Last season he was a genius. Mendy is officially on the hot seat alone now.

Yeah it’s set up for Mendy to be scape goat mid season if we get out to a slow start.

Hard to say how much we can blame pitching coaches or just lack of talent. Senga is his own thing - injured and needs everything to be perfect to preform. Manaea had a fantastic year - but it also was an anomaly compared to his career. Is he just returning to his true form? Montas was questioned from the beginning. Blackburn is who he’s always been. Peterson has also had a career full of inconsistency.

In a way the starters did pretty much what they’ve done their whole careers.

Part of me thinks Manaea just wasn’t right physically all season and I hope he gets healthy and can bounce back.

I ran it through ChatGPT and it said it’s a pretty fair trade for both teams addressing both their needs. The key is if Semian bounces back from last season.

Seeing Nimmo go is tough, but Semien is great and has a better contract than Nimmo and at a position of need. Also opens up the ability to move to Soto to LF down the line which makes sense

It’s a Stearns move. The numbers (money and stats) make sense and the emotional piece is tough. Makes me concerned about Pete.

Bring back Diaz. If this is to add to the pen WITH Diaz then I’m all for it. A chance for 2 elite arms at the back end. If this is Diaz’s replacement then I’m very nervous.

That’s the consensus. From another angle I’d rather have him than Helsley.

I am BESIDE myself right now. It's not 5 years, only 3 and 69m?! If the Mets didn't already have that offer, or better, on the table I really question the direction Stearns is trying to take us. Just ruined my day.

Holding my breath that they matched/surpassed the offer and he just simply choose the Dodgers. If they do not sign back Alonso (especially with Schwarber off the board), this team is going to be very, very different and I am not sure it is for the better.

If I were a Mets fan, I'd be pissed that they went 3Y/51M for Devin Williams when they could have resigned Diaz for 3Y/69M.

I think every Mets fan had hopes the Williams signing was the precursor to resigning Diaz. Seeing the Diaz deal, I can't think anything but Stearns completely screwed the pooch on this entire situation.

If they follow this up by trading for Trevor Megill and signing Robert Suarez, that's fine. But it's gonna be tough to replace Diaz

It is incredibly frustrating because I think Stearns is a good baseball mind, but his moves generally feel much more forward looking than trying to compete now. For a smaller market team this makes sense, but with Cohen's backing I do not think that is necessary. I could see a world where there is a separation before his vision is fully realized and then the next GM seems like a genius because a lot of the groundwork Stearns laid.

Coming here to voice all the same frustrations you guys laid out. Can not believe that Diaz only got 3 year and it wasn't with the Mets. With the richest owner in the sport and only costing you 3 years, I can't fathom how the Mets didn't top that offer. He has been fantastic for the Mets, is a fan favorite, has been reliable, he's only 32...I just don't get why you wouldn't give him 3 years. If they got him at 5 years, I totally get it. But 3?

Feels like now we need another reliable arm in the pen, a 1B, a CF and/or LF, a top line starter and probably a Dan Hurley.

Not saying you're wrong, but these comments do feel a little strange to me when he made the NLCS year 1 and then had a huge payroll year 2. It shouldn't be surprising that there's a big shakeup to a roster that showed it can't win. It seems like 90% of fans want Stearns gone when he's one of the best front office executives in baseball

I definitely do not want Sterns gone, but he made the NLCS with a roster mostly in place. I will give him credit that he did a great job building a pitching staff for 2024.

Mets offer was 3/$66M seems insane they let him go for $3M, is what it is

And the Mets said they'd go higher. Seems pretty clear that this was a Diaz choice not a Mets choice. So I have no complaints anymore, time to build a bullpen without him

With Diaz and formerly with the Nimmo trade, there's a sentiment out there of "They didn't win with this nucleus. Let Stearns do his thing and build the winner his way".

I don't know where I land with that. I know part of my reactions are emotional because I like guys like Nimmo and Diaz (and love Pete) but do I need to disconnect my thinking that way and be a little more blind in just letting them do what they need to do?

With Nimmo yes. I think putting aside the fan attachment it was a logical move to make. His contract is not great and only getting worse as his defense declines. You also have Soto locked into a corner OF spot with subpar defense and Benge coming up who are both LH hitters as well. Semien, Lindor, Baty is now a very good defensive infield which should help.

Pete and Diaz, the plan is far less clear so I don't think it's crazy to question the logic. Williams is an elite closer but without adding another elite arm it feels like a step back in the bullpen. The only alternative to Pete I was OK with was Schwarber and he's off the market now so would be disappointed if he's not back

I was hoping they would keep Diaz and jettison Petey.
Now they lost Diaz over 1M a year over 3. And with Schwarber gone I am certain this nimrod org will overpay for Alonso. Guaranteed.

Kinda feels like a trade or two has to be coming. I don’t really see the make over of this team on the free agent list out there. I’ve seen rumors that we’ve listened to offers about Peterson, McNeil and Senga - I think someone has to go between Vientos, Baty, Acuna and Mauricio as well. Can Stearns cook something up via a trade or two to bring back a big fish that changes the vibe?

Alonso to the Orioles. 5 yrs, 150m.

I’m heartbroken and there’s simply nothing Stearns can do to make up for letting Diaz and Pete go in a 24 hr period. Pete, Diaz and Nimmo? The heart is gutted right out of this franchise.

If they want to blow it up and reshape the roster in the image of youth then fine I get it. It sucks, but I can understand the vision. However, if they are going to commit to a youth movement why trade Nimmo for aging Semien instead of prospects? Tough offseason so far.

Nah. Why rebuild with Lindor in his prime and paying Soto what you’re paying him to be mediocre for the next 2-3 years?

They don’t have a better offense. Or rotation. Or bullpen. You don’t know if they have a better defense because right now Vientos is replacing Alonso at 1b and we don’t even have a CF outside Taylor. We are better nowhere as of today.
