The Official 2025 New York Mets thread

Of Baty, Vientos, Mauricio, Acuna, I can't believe I'm saying this but I think Baty is the only guy I care about coming back.
I'd include Vientos with Baty too. Baty has to be the 3B which I never thought I'd say, but Vientos should be the Dan Hurley or at least in the conversation. I think it would be an overreaction to a semi-expected sophomore slump to sell low on him

I really thought Mauricio would be at least a Dan Hurley for us. He was crushing before he got injured in the offseason. Acuna is either going to be his brother or he's going to be a complete bust. I really don't see him being anything in between. I was the most down on Baty since last year and he's the only one out of the four that improved and been consistently MLB level production.

The thing with Vientos is he's a below average fielder, doesn't really have a spot there and he's wicked slow.

Hard to see Acuna becoming anything close to his brother. He had 7 doubles, 0 triples and 0 HRs this year. I have no problem with him doing what he did this year off the bench or spot starting, but he's far away from a starter IMO.

David Stearns talked today, nothing Earth shattering but a few things that stood out:

  • Carlos Mendoza is back, other coaching changes are coming
  • Admitted he needs to be more aggressive and proactive with his moves
  • Open minded on the position player group to improve run prevention, AKA going to move bats to get better pitching
  • McLean, Sproat, Tong should all have a role at the major league level at some point next year
  • Senga needs to improve, relying on him for 30 starts would be foolish

Acuna is a solid late inning defensive upgrade on the infield and a fantastic option as a pinch runner in tight games. That’s about it. He has not shown power at the plate and isn’t a plus contact guy either. Strikes out a lot and doesn’t have a great eye.

It’s hard to see much more than that based on seeing him at the big league level.

Mauricio maybe has the highest upside of those 4 young guys but he seems like the lowest floor too. Terrible plate discipline, swings at non competitive pitches - but when he connects he has tremendous power and is an above average runner.

Vientos obviously has shown he can hit, but when he’s not hitting he is pretty useless. Can’t run. Can’t play the field.

Baty is the most consistent, overall player of them all. Not sure how high his ceiling is though. But his glove is actually pretty good and he has adequate power and seems to have a better command of the strike zone at the plate.

The interesting thing for Mauricio is he was 14th percentile in sprint speed this year (for reference Vientos was 19th percentile). Not really sure what happened to him, maybe it was just a fluke coming off the injury, but he was very slow

This was supposted to say D H not dan hurley lmao

Kind of surprised Hefner is gone, but the pitching was bad enough that something had to happen

Me too. Surprised they chopped him so quickly. Last season he was a genius. Mendy is officially on the hot seat alone now.

Yeah it’s set up for Mendy to be scape goat mid season if we get out to a slow start.

Hard to say how much we can blame pitching coaches or just lack of talent. Senga is his own thing - injured and needs everything to be perfect to preform. Manaea had a fantastic year - but it also was an anomaly compared to his career. Is he just returning to his true form? Montas was questioned from the beginning. Blackburn is who he’s always been. Peterson has also had a career full of inconsistency.

In a way the starters did pretty much what they’ve done their whole careers.

.-.
Part of me thinks Manaea just wasn’t right physically all season and I hope he gets healthy and can bounce back.

I ran it through ChatGPT and it said it’s a pretty fair trade for both teams addressing both their needs. The key is if Semian bounces back from last season.

Seeing Nimmo go is tough, but Semien is great and has a better contract than Nimmo and at a position of need. Also opens up the ability to move to Soto to LF down the line which makes sense

It’s a Stearns move. The numbers (money and stats) make sense and the emotional piece is tough. Makes me concerned about Pete.

Bring back Diaz. If this is to add to the pen WITH Diaz then I’m all for it. A chance for 2 elite arms at the back end. If this is Diaz’s replacement then I’m very nervous.

That’s the consensus. From another angle I’d rather have him than Helsley.

I am BESIDE myself right now. It's not 5 years, only 3 and 69m?! If the Mets didn't already have that offer, or better, on the table I really question the direction Stearns is trying to take us. Just ruined my day.

Holding my breath that they matched/surpassed the offer and he just simply choose the Dodgers. If they do not sign back Alonso (especially with Schwarber off the board), this team is going to be very, very different and I am not sure it is for the better.

If I were a Mets fan, I'd be pissed that they went 3Y/51M for Devin Williams when they could have resigned Diaz for 3Y/69M.
