The Official 2025 New York Mets thread

Dodgers are paying $126M for Kyle Tucker and giving up their 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th draft picks. There is aggressive and then there's this

It’s not so much about Tucker or the contract. I’m going to sound like the dumped chick here and just again wonder why we didn’t resign Alonso.

Kyle Tucker to the Dodgers.

Great plan by Stearns this offseason.
Ugh. I was pessimistic with Tucker because for days we kept reading the Mets offer publicly but no numbers on LA or Toronto. Felt like he was leaking the Mets stuff as leverage.

4 for 240?! Wild! The dodgers have a bottomless pit of funds.

Pressure is on now to get creative. Make a trade perhaps. A bat like Pete’s sure would be nice about now …

Supposedly defense? So sign a guy who hasn't played First base
It was weird and I questioned it but apparently he spent all last season working on the move to 1B so it was a long time coming. And there is a long history of infielders moving to 1B when their defense declines so we'll see how it goes

.-.

Much like the Diaz situation after seeing the Mets and Dodgers offers now I have a hard time being upset. Mets were offering $60M for the first 2 years before the opt out too and he preferred the Dodgers.

Hopefully there's a pivot to Bellinger/Valdez and a trade for Freddy Peralta. It seems dire when comparing the current team to the Dodgers but this is still one of the best teams in baseball currently, a few good moves makes them a legit WS contender

Dodger Offer:
4 yrs, 240m guaranteed
Opt outs after years 2 and 3
64m signing bonus
$30m deferred

Mets Offer:
4 yrs, 220m guaranteed
Opt outs after years 2 and 3
$75m signing bonus
$0 deferred

So basically he took the Diaz route and wants the "Kevin Durant" title.

Those signing bonuses are WILD to me.

Not on my radar either but I think he will be put at 2nd base. Lindor isn't moving from SS and they like Baty at 3rd. Bo did surprisingly well at 2nd in the series

.-.
So, thankfully this news pulled me off the ledge. I see Bichette at 3B, Lindor at SS, Semian at 2B and Polanco/Vientos at 1B.

Baty to LF is an interesting option. That would tell me they're not in on Bellinger or they're still planning on moving Baty (maybe in a Skubal deal?!). Another piece that's starting to play out is Mauricio. He doesn't have a FT position as of right now, he hasn't been moved in a deal and it's time he raises his production to the next level (like Baty did this year).

Oh wow, I had seen it speculated they may try for Bo and move Brett to 1B and Polanco to designated hitter. Interesting we move Brett to LF, not ideal IMO. He had really made strides as an INF. They've really not done him any favors for his development constantly moving him around.

We have a million infielders.

Bo
Brett
Vientos
Polanco
Lindor
Marcus
Acuna
Mauricio

Something's gotta give! Figure that 2 could be dealt right?

Brewers are still starting Joey Ortiz and Caleb Durbin on the left side of their infield, and have an unhappy Freddy Peralta ready to be dealt. Hopefully there's a match there somewhere

It's not just the bonuses, it's the AAV. Tucker and Bichette are both good, but IMHO, not great franchise-changing players. To be in the same stratosphere as Soto or Judge or Ohtani is nuts. Tucker will have a luxury tax hit of $57M, Bichette $42M on top of what they're getting paid.

I get that owners want to win championships and think it may well be worth this expense. But this inequity of the haves vs have nots is worse than the SEC/B1G vs rest of college sports.

The more I see, the more I love Bichette. I think with Soto they’re going to wear pitchers out and I love his fortitude. If you need a culture change I feel like he’s a plus.

I am still puzzled by Stearns moves. If his concern was defense he now has two players in Bichette at 3rd and Polanco at 1st who have never played the position, especially for a full big league season.

Those guys are replacing guys in Alonso and Vientos who were huge negatives on defense, and are moving off of much harder defensive positions. There's a history of middle infielders moving to the corner spots and being very good defenders

I kinda agree, but Alonso wasn't horrendous. He was if he had to throw the ball or foul balls popped up down the line he was questionable at best. But he was pretty solid other than those specific type plays I thought. And really Bo will be replacing Baty. Vientos wasn't starting at 3B this coming year if we didn't make that move, Baty was the starting 3B I feel pretty confident about. He isn't a gold glover, but he proved himself to be dependable.

I do agree with your point about middle infielders adjusting to corner spots. I get the logic of that for sure and think Bo will be a better 3B glove than he was at SS.

Stearns stressed run prevention in some of his comments, on one hand it is odd what we've done with Bo and Polanco playing new positions and not really great gloves to begin with. But also we DID bring in a reigning gold glove 2B. Up the middle right now we have Alvy, Lindor, Semien and ... Taylor? I mean if it IS Taylor, that's one strong middle right there defensively. But really Taylor needs to be the 4th OF guy IMO.

If strictly comparing this team to last years - well 3B was a question for a decent part of the year before Baty sort of shored it up. LF was average. 1B was average. 2B was average or below average. Now we have 2 question marks at the corners and a clear upgrade at 2nd. Still unsure what we have in LF. Another run prevention method is better pitching. So far we haven't exactly done anything there. I still expect a move. I feel like a trade has to come for a pitcher or OF. Baty, Vientos, Acuna, Mauricio - all of those guys should be available to pair with say Sproat or Tong or even Jett Williams depending on what you can land. Feels like that's a move that needs to happen. Way too many infielders on this team.

Alonso's defense was horrendous last year, like bottom of the league horrendous. Now I would have had no problem bringing him back because the offense makes up for it, but I also think it's clear that Stearns never liked him and was forced to bring him back last year

Baty was definitely dependable at 3B and would have had no issue with him at 3B this year, only brought up Vientos because he was the 3B last year that the goal was to upgrade on. Think having Bichette at 3B and now Baty in the McNeil role playing 5 times a week between 1B/2B/3B/LF can be really valuable. Not really following what you mean by question marks at the corners though. Bichette and Polanco have long proven histories of being very productive players. Unless you mean just defensively, but even that's a stretch for me. Look at a guy like Jonathan Aranda who went from a 2B with no range to a 75th percentile defender at 1B full time last year.

Agree there's still more moves coming, so hard to compare to a complete team from last year yet. They're still in on Bellinger which I think makes too much sense to fill out the OF with Soto and Benge. And like you said, lots of excess infielders that you can still approach Milwaukee, Minnesota, Detroit with to improve the pitching. Or you stay in the FA market with Valdez.
