The Official 2024 NY Mets Thread

I'd agree with this. The only walk off HR I can recall in an elimination game was Pratt's. Nails bomb in game 3 in '86 was big as it changed momentum. I'd argue that Al Weis' two bombs vs Orioles in '69 belong because Al Weis home runs are demoralizing to opponents, lol.

I don't know everything that's gone on with the Mets since 2007 when I switched allegiance to the Pirates, but during the 40+ years I was a die hard Mets fan, I'm hard pressed to think of more than seven game/series changing bombs that would eliminate any of the three mentioned above from the top 10.
Whoa! Why switch allegiances on us?!!?

a) I moved to Pittsburgh in 2002. I hung onto the Mets for five years after that, even going to something like 75% of the games Mets played @PNC. Hell, I was even excited when we got Lastings Milledge, telling my wife that we got a player that was going to turn things around

b) The mid-2000s Mets featured a bunch of prima donnas (not Wright). They became hard for me to root for given all the money many of those guys were getting while not putting out max effort. Meantime, we got a new GM in '07 who seemed to have a plan. Had the best ballpark in America, and these guys, while half as talented and earning way less $ were busting their butts while developing some home-grown stars . Kinda like the '67-'68 Mets.

LOL. I drank the Lastings Milledge kool aid too.

I remember the Lastings Milledge 3,000 Hit Club Watch! Missed it by just 2,596.

But props to the Mets for actually using their minor leagues to get a great player then paying the man. They deserve this performance.

Meanwhile they’re thinking of another bullpen game in gm 1 of the NLCS With Senga. Hell, start McNeil too. WTF. ?
Maneah has to start gm 1.

It's not a bullpen game. Senga is their ace and he'll be ready to go 4 innings based on his last game in Philadelphia. And Peterson will be ready right behind him.

Manaea game 1 and Senga/Peterson game 2 isn't a bad idea with the off day Tuesday isn't a bad idea though.

If McNeil sees the field under any circumstance where the game or series is in question, I'll flip out. Candelita and Acuna have quickly made me forget he's even on the team.

Everyone in my Mets group chat is saying he needs to start and move Tyrone Taylor to the bench. I don't even want to see anything other than a pinch hitting AB, I don't care how good his July and August numbers were

Bummer. Was hoping for Pads.

At least there's no Orel Hershiser to deal with.

Kike gonna get a fine from MLB, I think his teammates will cover it.

It will be a good series between the Mets and Dodgers. Dodgers pitching is down, but Yamamoto's performance against the Padres showed he is ready.

Looking forward to the West Coast vs. East Coast series.

Lastings Lol. There is a blast from the past!

I will say PNC is a cool park!

I was more scared of the Padres, the dodgers line up seems more top heavy whereas the padres felt deep 1-9. But then watching them collect 2 hits last night made me long to face them lol.

As far as the rotation - I don’t have a preference. Peterson has been great, Senga is our ace. If we go that route game one I’m totally fine with it. If we go Manaea I totally get that too. It’s weird but I trust the staff 1-4 right now. I don’t trust the pen. At all.

As far as McNeil. I mean I wouldn’t tinker. His bat vs Taylor’s bat is negligible imo. Sure McNeil has a history of being a better hitter but he has batted .270 or worse for 2 straight seasons. Taylors glove is superior. I’d stick with Taylor and use McNeil as a pinch hitter late in games if needed.

Luckily this only counts as 1 loss (I think)
Yep, just one. Flaherty was on his game vs Mets pen. Tomorrow is reversed, Manaea vs LA's pen.

I do question MLB's scheduling. Late day game after night game after travel with shadows in play, probably favors LA all else being equal. But the late game is two eastern time zone teams.

Will be interesting how Mets use Senga as he only threw 30 pitches (albeit mostly bad ones).

They're not using him before game 5 if at all. He's thrown 9 innings all year so wasn't going more than 40-50 pitches today anyway

It’s easy to second guess Sengas use the last week but last night couldn’t have gone worse. He had something like 16 balls in 21 pitches and just looked off from the jump.

We need Manaea huge today. And we need to get the swag back quick.

They try to brush away the suggestion it did not matter starting a pitcher who should not even be on the roster (i.m.o. ) for post season, as we could not even push across a run. And to start him game 5? Nuts. Might as well put Diaz in to start and we can have a walk fest.
Rant over.
- Agree we should be playing tonight and Yanks should be playing at 4. MLB must think folks will tune in Judge over Ohtani.
Good news for Deepster as he can watch the Jets tonight.

Senga not being on the roster is an insane take. Wanting Manaea game 1 is fine, but there was no scenario where your ace isn't getting the ball in game 1 or 2 now that he's healthy

Should be a good game as the Mets will be facing the Dodgers bullpen. Dodgers are doing this to preserve their starting pitchers for the NY games.

Wonder if Mets will walk Ohtani again if there are runners on base. Will it be worth it to walk Ohtani only to face Betts?

It should be a good game with the quick turnaround from last night.

LOL. If we go down 0-2 and the Jets lose to the Bills, I'm going to sit in my garage with the car running and doors closed.

It’s easy to second guess the Senga thing now, but game 1 vs Philly no one questioned it when he gave us 2 innings and mowed everyone down outside of the very first batter of the game. It worked then and didn’t this time. He was wild. It’s baseball, sometimes that happens. Unfortunately for us it happened in the NLCS. Our bats also were silent.

Ultimately we didn’t create many chances to get back in it. We had 2 walks in the 3rd and Marte flew out to the warning track. Then 2 lead off singles but Winker makes a dumb base running mistake to halt any chance of a rally.

Senga just didn’t have it. Not even close. But he was so close to escaping that danger in the first. Mookie Betts was scared to take second and then was scared to go home on a fly ball to center. We were one out away from getting out of that jam and possibly righting the ship.

Gotta turn the page and hope Manaea delivers tonight and the bats wake up and put the pressure on LA early. Walk out of LA 1-1 and it was a successful trip.

Well you don’t. Sean was great today and Vientos showed his pop, boy.
Diaz makes me insane but not so much today. He was on point and his pitches had that zip in or near the strike zone. Thought maybe the Chavez sunshine would be our undoing with Iglesias and Pete but that DP? Nice.
The pitchers rave about Alvarez behind the plate but he needs to step up from his .050 hitting. Why not take 3 at Citi and avoid a flight back out to Cali.

An ace last year. Not this year. He’s played 3 games. And he’s wild and limited in innings. But they have cast their lot for game 5 at Citi with him.

He showed he was their ace this year when he pitched too, 1 bad outing doesn't change that. He looked great against the Braves and Phillies this year. I like the combo of him and Peterson as a tandem in game 5

Peterson is hamstrung. You know he could start and go 6 fairly easily. But he has to wait and see if Senga can get out of the second. How is that an “Ace.?”
I do not like this but hope we are up 3-1 and a nice problem to have.
Go Sevvy and Q.

Because he's the best pitcher on the roster. The next time out he'll be up to 50+ pitches and probably even 60-70, no reason he can't go 4-5 innings next time out.

You didn't like Lindor all year. You didn't like Pete Alonso all year. And look where that got us, so I've never been more confident in Senga

Lindor set the tone. That dude is something else!

And then Vientos! Vientos is still improving and has some holes in his game but he has been nothing short of fantastic. Outside of Lindor … best bat on the team? Need 2 of 3 at home. A sweep would be ideal.

I would not be at all surprised to see Manaea come in to get Ohtani on his side throwing day. I love that matchup.

And I thought the LA crowd was "okay". I cannot wait to see what this Grimace/OMG insane asylum is like tomorrow night.

Vientos is what we hoped Brett Baty would be. What a stud! And we were all ready to trade him for a reliever at the deadline in 2022.

100%. Going into the season he seemed to have no trade value at all. Supposed no position and couldn’t make the roster. He’s been better than what I imagine Baty could be, at least the thump in his bat has. Legit 40 homer type power.

Can only hope Baty has a similar sort of epiphany. Fascinating to see how it will play out in the coming seasons with Vientos, Baty, Acuna, Mauricio and Jett Williams.
