The Patriots evidently have to play by different Rooney Rule provisions, or at least have to tread lighter, because some talkingheads took issue with how they fully complied with the rule everyone else plays by.

My guess is Vrabel still ends up in Foxborough. OTOH, I thought Washington wanted an offensive minded head coach and Johnson was going there last season, so what do I know?

But…I do like the fact that the Patriots are looking seriously at Ben Johnson. Hopefully that means Vrabel is still in play.

Vrabel to New England, says Sheffter.

Rex Ryan just said he hopes he can kick his ass twice a year. Did he let something leak?

Vrabel makes total sense for the Pats. I'd be happy if I were a fan.

Glass half full - He's a legacy. He can help continue a bridge between past success and future development. Smart guy, X and O wise, good leader.

Glass half empty - Failed at Tennessee. 7-10, 6-11 his last 2 years. Went without a HC job for over a year maybe for a reason? Pats seem stuck on hiring old players instead of injecting new blood.

I think it’s a good hire by them..dangit. I am curious who he will hire as his OC.

So…the Jets move down their list. I keep hearing Aaron Glenn…who I love and he wants to be here. But…it would be nice to have an offensive minded coach who has a plan on what to do with the QB position.

OK…they interviewed Jeff Ulbrich…why? I get courtesy interviews…but this is beyond courtesy. I wouldn’t want him back as DC let alone HC. After Saleh left, that defense was not the same. Ulbrich also showed he is a players coach to a fault. He said Reddick was one of the more “selfless players”? Really? They guy who held out…showed up out of shape.

Anyway…Graziano of ESPN predicts Arthur Smith. I don’t mind that idea..if they feel Smith can work with Fields and hire a competent DC. Maybe Smith learned from his time in Atlanta how to lead.

I still like Liam Coen.

9-7, 9-7, 11-5, 12-5 before that, with pedestrian NFL QBs in Mariota and Tannehill.

I don't think he was fired for performance. Reports were his relationship with Amy Adams Strunk, Titans principle owner, went south. He wanted more control over player personnel and didn't think Ran Carthon was ready to be a GM (Was he right? Carthon was fired last week), He also spent the Titan's 2023 bye weekend in Foxborough, as an inductee to the Patriots' Hall of Fame.

Adams Strunk took exception to his acceptance speech and now she has to find a new GM for a franchise in possession of the #1 overall pick, "earned" on merit.

Arthur Smith? Ugggggggh. Everything about him reeks of 7-10. This franchise is going to be the end of me.

I honestly thought that would be a pretty good get. I suppose you can see if Liam Coen or Joe Brady would come, but who else are they getting? Ben Johnson isn't taking that job.

Aaron Glenn would be really good, but I think he'd choose a different opening. Joe Brady, Flores, Coen, Jacobs. Maybe give Spagnuolo another shot. If you're lucky, Dallas does something dumb like hiring Deion.

Seven openings. Cowboys, Bears, Jags, Raiders, Saints, Giants, Jets.

I guess I was sold on Smith because he made chicken salad out of chicken poop in Pittsburgh. Also…I do like the idea of an offensive minded coach.

What do you think of Liam Coen?

Who is your preference at this point? Are you still a Rex guy?

I don’t think Rex was ever my top choice but I would have rallied behind him if he got it because I do think he loves the franchise. I don’t think he has a shot in hell now and that’s fine.

Liam Coen is interesting. I wouldn’t complain about Aaron Glenn. No one has me optimistic or happy.

So…I had my Zoom interview yesterday for the HC. I think I did well but I think they are going in a different direction. I think my downfall was telling Woody to sell the team.

Speaking of which…apparently the only HC and GM who got a second interview so far are Glenn and GM Lance Newmark. I guess Newmark has a history with Glenn in Detriot. I like the idea of a HC and GM combo who have famiiarity. And Glenn was a great Jet who has a lot of respect in the league.

I still would prefer an offensive minded coach, but I think Glenn is worth a shot,

LOL. That's too bad. I think "Coach Shaky" has a very Jets ring to it.

Here is the current list. 16 interviews between 1/2 and 1/19. It's such a blur of "kinda promising" coordinators and old retreads, I don't even care at this point. Aaron Glenn is fine. Todd Bowles v2.0.

Head Coach

January 2
Jets complete interview with Ron Rivera.
January 3
Jets complete interview with Mike Vrabel
January 7

Jets complete interview with Rex Ryan
January 8

Jets complete interview with Matt Nagy.
January 9
Jets complete interview with Aaron Glenn.
January 10
Jets complete interview with Mike Locksley.
Jets complete interview with Steve Spagnuolo.
January 11

January 13

Just to recap, here is Shaky's first post in this thread last March. All fair and valid points at the time. They got the WR help. The OL was okay. The defense was NOT stellar, especially post-Saleh. It really came down to Rodgers underperforming and a poorly coached unit on both sides of the ball.

This has been a bad offseason after a bad on-season.

In summary…

  • The star quarterback…after saying the Jets need to stop with the BS…decided to start a fued with a talk show host.
  • The Athletic published a report about team dysfuntion and their paranoid head coach
  • Free Agent signing Mecole Hardman went on to the win the Super bowl (literally) and bad mouth the culture of the team.
  • The owner of the team publicly declared that the GM and coaches need to win this year and that the team had no backup qb last year.
  • #2 draft pick Zach WIlson (the 2023 backup qb) will either be released or traded for a day 3 draft pick.
  • 2023 sack leader heads to free agency and will likely sign elsewhere due to a lack of cap room
  • misc front office personnel and coaching staff have left the team for other organizations,

So…vibes are not good heading into this season. While I dislike Rodgers as a person…he does seem determined to prove that he still has some gas left in the tank. As long as Rodgers is healthy and playing, the team has a chance to make the playoffs. We will see if Douglas can finally build an offensive line, They need a lot there. they need a WR2. They need a backup qb.

It will be interesting to see if they can recruit quality FAs to this sinking ship. They still have a stellar defense and a core group of great young talent. If they can keep their ST intact…fix the Oline, get a quality WR and decent backup qb…they can actually be decent this year. That’s a lot to ask…but not impossible.

Good hire. Don't judge that last game, he had like 4 healthy defensive starters by halftime. Hell of a player for the Jets too. Should build out a professional staff. As a Pats fan, I do not approve.

The Jets still don't have a fulltime GM. Phil Savage is interim at the moment. I'm interested in how the Rodgers issue plays out.

The defense was probably the biggest surprise. I didn’t realize how much Saleh had an impact on their play…I assumed it was Ulbrich. Or it could just be that Ulbrich’s effectiveness was diminished by wearing two hats. But..I still think it was Saleh leaving that hurt them.

The OL play was ok…i agree. Smith was a bust. AVT seems to have regressed a bit, but SImpson and TIpmann were solid. Fashanu shows promise. Moses was a warrior.

Douglas really messed up the DL. He couldn’t know that Jermaine Johnson would basically be lost for the year, but the Reddick and JFM trades were brutal.

Rodgers wasn’t healthy…which pretty much sunk the offense…but I am not sure even a healthy Rodgers could have helped this dysfuntional team.

Now that they have hired Glenn…I am pretty confident they will release Rodgers. A first time head coach doesn’t need Rodgers drama.

So I’m not doing cartwheels about Glenn. Like Jets fans have done the last 25 years, we lace up, stare forward and trudge on.
