Ordinarily the dead cap hit would dictate that Rodgers returns to the Jets, but the 2025 cap is expected to be north of $270M. If QBs typically consume 20-25% of the cap, The Jets could technically absorb the $49M hit.

According to Spotrac, the highest paid - and theoretically best - FA QBs are Sam Darnold (rumors of re-signing with MIN), and Zach Wilson. Both are former Jets and probably non-starters (as in they wouldn't return Johnson's phone call), given how they were treated when they were there.

The best of the rest who would also make sense for NYJ are probably Justin Fields, Jameis Winston (I don't see how CLE can resign him.), and Trey Lance, with Mariota (Unless he re-signs with WSH), Heinicke, and Mac Jones on the outside.

Unless the money was Giants' level stupid (it won't be), Daniel Jones would be foolish to return to Greater New York.

BTW, NYG is in the same, or arguably worse, predicament, though Darold and Wilson may be an option for them. Just heard this morning that Ewers reportedly has a big NIL deal from a Big Ten team to transfer and not enter the draft.
So when you look at those options…can you see how I say it may make sense to re-up with Rodgers another year?

The Jets are unique…they have a pretty good roster…they need a good coach and a QB. I think if they hire the right coach (not an up and coming coordinator) and can get competent QB play…then can be a decent team. They are in a much better situation than the Giants. If Rodgers finishes out the season playing like he did last week, he is their best option. I really do think he has been really banged up all year until now.

The problem is…they never hire the right coach…and they always underachieve…lol,

Heads up/reminder ESPN "The New York Sack Exchange" 30 for 30 debuts tonight (12/13). Looking forward to enjoying some Jets content on TV for the first time in a long while.

Those were the days a young Deepster was proud to be a Jets fan. Can't wait. I have 2 Jets jerseys. A Mo Lewis, which I haven't worn in decades after he paved the way for Brady....and a Gastineau 99.

6/5 or pk'm.

All winning teams need a good coach and QB. Whether Saleh was a good head coach is arguable. He has a defensive background and the D was pretty good under him, but really never had a good QB other than for a handful of snaps during Week 1 last season.

Rodgers is going into his 42 y.o. year next season, is only getting older, and nothing he's done over the last three suggests he's Steve DeBerg, let alone Tom Brady. He sustained a major leg injury at age 40, may have CTE, and his antics make him a cancer in the locker room. If they do keep him, I think they would have to guarantee 2026 and extend his contract to 2030 (47 y.o. season) in order to reduce the voided years cap hit.

They should also bring in a Justin Fields type and draft a QB within the 1st three rounds. Fans can hope for a diamond in the rough. Final note on Rodgers...I personally wouldn't guarantee him to start.

I agree on the Coach. I don't think they can afford to take another chance on an up & comer. Not necessarily a retread, but they probably need a coach with experience and at least moderate success. Anthony Lynn comes to mind, but I'd hate to see him leave the Commanders. Vrabel, of course, and Brian Flores might be good. Lynn is the only offensive minded of the three, but I'm sure there are other good candidates.

I really don’t think he is a cancer in the locker room. If he plays well..they don’t care about anything else. He hasn’t played well until last week…which was also his healthiest start. I don’t know all the specifics of the cap impact…but I know he has no more guaranteed money. If they keep him..it will be a one year bridge.

As I have said..I don’t like Rodgers and I would be ok if they moved on. Tyrod Taylor, Jarvis and a 2nd round pick may work with this team. The risk is Taylor getting injured and you don’t have an experienced backup.

Not arguing....but what would you do instead, taking into account who's actually available via draft or FA?
I don't know. I just know that the Jets can't move on from the current morass without getting rid of Rodgers first. A big problem is how do you build a decent front office? The Pats can't do it. What about getting Darnold back? Maybe he can be your Jim Plunkett, chucking deep.

So you want to ditch Rodgers and really have no other suggestion who else to start next year?

I think his attitude is keeping him from playing as well as he has in the past. It seems like he thinks nothing is his fault.

His coach and GM both took a fall for him.

I think his age, achilles injury, poor o line play and leg injuries have kept him from playing like he has in the past.

Yes. I'm saying Rodgers is sub-replacement level, even without the drama. Look at the Vikings. Why do they have a back-up playing well and the Jets can't even find one guy?

I still don’t think you’re answering the question.

Which QB potentially available, regardless of coach, gives the Jets the best chance next season?
