St. John's Post Game Thread

Talk about momentum killers. We were down by 9? AK inbounds to Reibe who quickly gives it back to him, and somehow he's not looking, it bounces off his chest and SJU recovers and scores. And then they steal the next inbounds and convert.

Befuddling that our senior captain makes this type of braindead error. He's praised as a high IQ guy... How can you not expect your center not to return you the ball?

I will just say this once for people who haven't sat though countless NBA drafts.

The NBA draft is about potential not performance. That is why most of the first rounders are 20 years old or younger.

That is why Mullins will be highly desired. He has a perfect jump shot and a lightning release. He is 6'6". He moves well. His potential will be obvious to NBA GMs.
Exactly this. NBA scouts aren’t going to look at Mullins like some UConn fans look at him, and say because he was bad against St John’s he’s plummeting down their board. That’s not at all how it works.

Danny realized he was using Andre sub optimally. He moved Andre to the baseline and teams had no answer for it. We need more athletic DUDES like that. Guys like Andre, Castle, Freeman types that are some combination of athletic, big, physical guys that can defend, get rebounds, get in the passing lanes, run opponents off the three point line, block shots, etc. A team needs at least 2-3 of those guys to play with the highly skilled guys. You need toughness and athleticism too. You need rim protection.
Sounds like Colben Landrew

Funny how we lost 8 games that year and were a 4 seed. I don’t recall 15 pages and counting on how bad we suck and have no tournament potential.

We realize Liam has been in the G league for chunks of the season including until 5 days ago, right? Do we not think that guaranteed money will be there in a year? And there’s always NIL, right?
You do realize playing in the G League doesn't mean you can't contribute in the NBA at a later time. Gary Payton II, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and Chris Boucher to name a few as well as our own Cam Spencer.

I think the depth of the '26 draft is gonna hurt Mullins in that it will knock him down to the late teens-early 20s. There are just too many physically mature, legit dudes eligible this season. It's going to come down to the difference between another year of NIL and the slotted salary for his theoretical draft point.

The bigger question is, why do we keep shooting 3/19 from three? Our offense couldn't generate any clean looks tonight, and our shooters have been in slumps for several games (or in Solo's case, the entire season).
Because the 3 guys who shoot those 3s are either too scared or don’t have the ability to drive into the paint. Mullins for some reason forgot what he did in the Georgetown game and when back to jacking 3s. Solo never wants to go into the paint. Alex does occasionally but he is too loose with it.

Maybe. Different sports, obviously, but Dante Moore turned down being the #2 pick to return to Oregon.
I’m sure he was told he wouldn’t be a first rd pick, Kipers mock drafts have been very off, he had Shedeur going in rd 1 as well as the so called draft experts.

Is it less likely to make it as a G leaguer? If you stay in school and improve your draft stock is it less likely that a player would end up in the G league?

We will kick peoples A. Outside of Michigan, we are as good as any team. Get past the first game jitters, and winning 5 is in our DNA. Credit to SJ tonight. They were given and they voraciously took. Can't wait to see them do what they do best, in the dance.

Tonight's game has one very useful side affect. It gives the rest of the field a false impression of who we are. I like that.

Difference between Dan and Rick is that Rick does not hesitate to run players off if they're not working out, has done this his entire career. It's a useful skill now that that these kids are essentially paid professionals. Hurley genuinely cares about his players and their development as people and basketball players. That's admirable but he may need to learn to be a bit more cutthroat when called for.

Down to .349% from 3.

I guess I'm not seeing this amazing "potential". A lightning quick release? Not that much in his bag. Moves well? That is a lottery pick?

Yep. Or even the last game of the 2014 regular season and then again in the conference tournament.

Team was clobbered worse than this.

In 2023 UConn lost in the BET semis and ended up losing 7 games in the conference, including embarrassing losses.

UConn fans tend to underestimate how badly the lack of fouls called in the conference hurts their style of play.

The threads that January were bad. That team played far better ball in February and March prior to the NCAAs.

The DNA line better live up to it's rep this year - we can retire it if they don't make a decent run this year.
