St. John's Post Game Thread

It's already seemingly been confirmed as a mild ankle sprain
With the caveat that the info on injuries from this staff haven't always been accurate.

We realize Liam has been in the G league for chunks of the season including until 5 days ago, right? Do we not think that guaranteed money will be there in a year? And there’s always NIL, right?
You do realize playing in the G League doesn't mean you can't contribute in the NBA at a later time. Gary Payton II, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and Chris Boucher to name a few as well as our own Cam Spencer.

I think the depth of the '26 draft is gonna hurt Mullins in that it will knock him down to the late teens-early 20s. There are just too many physically mature, legit dudes eligible this season. It's going to come down to the difference between another year of NIL and the slotted salary for his theoretical draft point.

The bigger question is, why do we keep shooting 3/19 from three? Our offense couldn't generate any clean looks tonight, and our shooters have been in slumps for several games (or in Solo's case, the entire season).
Because the 3 guys who shoot those 3s are either too scared or don’t have the ability to drive into the paint. Mullins for some reason forgot what he did in the Georgetown game and when back to jacking 3s. Solo never wants to go into the paint. Alex does occasionally but he is too loose with it.

.-.
Maybe. Different sports, obviously, but Dante Moore turned down being the #2 pick to return to Oregon.
I’m sure he was told he wouldn’t be a first rd pick, Kipers mock drafts have been very off, he had Shedeur going in rd 1 as well as the so called draft experts.

Is it less likely to make it as a G leaguer? If you stay in school and improve your draft stock is it less likely that a player would end up in the G league?

We will kick peoples A. Outside of Michigan, we are as good as any team. Get past the first game jitters, and winning 5 is in our DNA. Credit to SJ tonight. They were given and they voraciously took. Can't wait to see them do what they do best, in the dance.

Tonight's game has one very useful side affect. It gives the rest of the field a false impression of who we are. I like that.

Difference between Dan and Rick is that Rick does not hesitate to run players off if they're not working out, has done this his entire career. It's a useful skill now that that these kids are essentially paid professionals. Hurley genuinely cares about his players and their development as people and basketball players. That's admirable but he may need to learn to be a bit more cutthroat when called for.

Exactly this. NBA scouts aren’t going to look at Mullins like some UConn fans look at him, and say because he was bad against St John’s he’s plummeting down their board. That’s not at all how it works.
Down to .349% from 3.

I guess I'm not seeing this amazing "potential". A lightning quick release? Not that much in his bag. Moves well? That is a lottery pick?

Funny how we lost 8 games that year and were a 4 seed. I don’t recall 15 pages and counting on how bad we suck and have no tournament potential.
Yep. Or even the last game of the 2014 regular season and then again in the conference tournament.

Team was clobbered worse than this.

In 2023 UConn lost in the BET semis and ended up losing 7 games in the conference, including embarrassing losses.

UConn fans tend to underestimate how badly the lack of fouls called in the conference hurts their style of play.

The threads that January were bad. That team played far better ball in February and March prior to the NCAAs.

The DNA line better live up to it's rep this year - we can retire it if they don't make a decent run this year.

We were not fouled on all our missed 3’s today. Let’s stop with the big east is too tough for us.
eh, fouled on missed 3 a couple times, but you're right they missed open looks.

I understand what your saying, but it's the NBA evaluators and draft guys that are saying......if you think you are a better evaluator than they are, I get it, but that's who is saying it..

Right now we're shooting to get our asses kicked by any team capable of shooting 40%+ from the field and that doesn't treat the ball like a live grenade.

Have to say I finally agree w you on something. Seems like he’d be tossed around like a rag doll in the NBA. There is talent there but he needs more work to refi e.

.-.
Best player on the floor? No. If I was an nba gm, there wasn’t a player I’d want more. Braylon Mullins is an elite talent. The UConn system, much like Steph, holds him back.
The UConn system is the most NBA system in college ball.

I wish they did a lot more dribbling to get around the high screens and dump it off instead of sticking to picks and rolls and looking for 3s.

disagree thats part of the problem...nba blows overall so he'll get drafted bc he chucks the 3 and hits and is athletic, but agree not ready, these days it doesn't matter if you are "ready"
Agreed. His game is perfect for the NBA. Spacing. 3s. No defense

He’s not ready to be that guy. He’s not Steph Castle, not Jeremy Lamb, he’s not even Jordan Hawkins

No NBA GM will give a damn he struggled in an idiotic conference game that for some reason prides itself on basketball games with rugby defense…
He ain’t getting constantly grabbed around the waist to slow him down around screens at the next level….

Just one of 100 more reasons to get out of this ridiculous conference

True. I do not like the term, personally. But UConn winning in the non-conference and SJ losing in the non-conference was not done with mirrors. And yet SJ clearly was the better team over the 3 games. It is what it is. UConn, won 18 straight, playing iffy. I am sure they can win 5, even against much tougher competition.

With how this staff has treated injury information, we won’t know for sure on Demary until pregame shoot around on Thursday or Friday.
