Sooo… Who is are QB gonna be?

We don't need to keep anyone happy when everyone is set to return and we are bringing in Cole Welliver
Roberson is was hailed as a true dual threat so if the go with TR why would they use Zion at all. Nothing against Turner.

Whoever is the clear-cut winner ... really, really hope we have a QB who separates himself and stays healthy for the whole season. Seems like it's been forever since UConn has had a healthy QB for the whole season. Can anyone recall the last season we had a QB from start to finish without missed games?

Rooting for Roberson

Yup...

18 sacks > Top 30 in country for sacks allowed in 2022.

Stats like that can sometimes be misleading. UConn was top 30 in sacks allowed but was bottom 5 in total amount of passes attempted @ 276. Miss State with most pass attempts @ 634 and 26 sacks given up was rated tied for 56th but could argue had better pass blocking OL than UConn (maybe better QB at passing and getting ball out but still lot more chances for OL to give up sacks). Air Force was top 7 in sacks allowed per game and had by far the fewest pass attempts at 87.

my "money" is still on Roberson but I think we're honestly better at QB than some think, we have 3 at the very least solid guys
I hope McDonald is okay with possibly being #3 or 4 this year. If he's near as good as his film he should be competing hard next year. But I know the fans are already moving on to the next prospect.

I admit I don't have the eye of a scout. Even so, there were so many times last season I'm watching and thinking "You got him!" But the ball never got there.
Just keep your eyes on the grill and everything else will work itself out.

Depends on the pass protection. Wasn't great last year. One of the reasons there was no down field threat. Will it be better this year? Dunno.
Disagree with this wholeheartedly. Our Oline was not bad last yr. Z was extremely indecisive with the ball most of the year which lead to most of the sacks they “gave up” last yr.

I can see some rotation of the spot early on. Not a fan of it but can see it happening.

One problem last year was there was too much help that had to be given in pass protection. At lot of times, on pass plays, there was an extra lineman inserted to help or tight ends and running backs were held in to assist blocking. These were necessary coaching schemes to assist in protection, but it also limited the number of receivers running routs. This allowed the couple of receivers running routs to be covered by the best DB's and even be double covered. Hopefully the line has improved enough to be able to get away from max protection this year. This will go a long way to improving the passing game.

Sometimes up to seven OL.

The problem with the passing game was NOT the offensive line. The problem was NOT the wide receivers. It was NOT the running game. It was NOT the tight end.

The reason we max protected was NOT the offensive line or the routes were ran. The entire passing game was simplified to protect the passer.

Yes, he was really the only healthy option at QB last year. Hits to the WRs and RBs hurt too. Devland just pointed out it further reduced options.

The pass protection was good last season. On sacked 18 times in 13 games.
Of course. Because they only threw short. C'mon ....

How many times did ZT stand in the pocket and throw long?

This is an interesting hill to die on.
Well we shall see, right. Just expressing an opinion in the form of "don't be surprised if ZT starts against NCST". Not that he WILL start. Nothing wrong with that, is there?

That wasn’t the line, I don’t understand how it’s the line when we have two of the best returning guards in the nation and 3 out of the 5 are on the shrine bowl watch list. We had a true freshmen quarterback who wasn’t caught up to the game speed of college. We literally have heard couple of guys say ZT has improved with going through his progression much quicker and has adapted to the game speed of college. Can we not stop blaming the o-line. Yes, they gave up 18 sacks or whatever but I do remember when they gave ZT time to throw a deep ball and we completed it, it was because had good pass protection. We only gave up sacks when teams were sending 6-7 guys on us.

My opinion is he’s not starting… all signs point to Roberson.

I don’t get how people miss the pressers when Charlton/Mora talks about how much the passing game was simplified. If we really wanna talk about why we max protected. It’s because non of our tight ends could block a fly last year hence we had an extra linemen.

Fagnano threw for 289 yards versus Boston College. And that means nothing as well.
Yup, Fagnano against BC was 21 for 43 and 289. ZT against BC was 11-19 and 173.

Maine 17, BC 38.
UConn 13, BC 3

What was your point exactly? Because it's kinda escaping me.

The opinion was perfectly rational. The logic behind it was not. No one is criticizing you for thinking ZT will win the job (if that's what you think).

Sometimes i really think a lot of you talk about the team way more than you watch. Pass protection "wasn't great last year"? We had two of the top 15 guards in the country and only allowed 18 sacks... think we're fine there
If the pass protection had been good he would have stood in the pocket, run through progressions, and thrown downfield. Never happened. End of discussion.

He was literally thrown into the fire… I’m not sure if you are trolling, but Mora/Charlton said ZT had to be quicker in his decision making. It was evident when he was literally missing wide open dudes from the pocket but he never looked their way. You’re implying that the pass protection was not good and he was not standing in the pocket nor going through his progress or throwing downfield because the o-line protection was not good.

.-.
Well he did get almost 50 yards combined passing and running in the game.
ZT was 10 for 12 and 39 yards passing. Millen was 0 for 3. Neither threw an interception, ZT fumbled once, recovered by UConn.

UConn gained 121 on the ground.

My point is he threw for 289 yards against an FBS opponent, sorry that escaped you.
And my point is that UConn played ball control football and ate up lots of clock by throwing less than half the time that Maine did. It was a great strategy as UConn won. And ZT's passing stats were better than Fagnano's in the bargain.

Given that fact, ZT, having played against NCST, UM, Syracuse, and Liberty is a whole lot more seasoned than Fagnano against that level of competitiion. Two steps above BC last year.

That said, the point I am making is that don't be surprised. I really have no dog in this fight. The staff are quite capable of being objective, I am sure.

The logic is that one slightly outperformed the other against a common opponent (ZT) and has relatively a fair amount of experience against high level teams (ZT) while the other has none.

The logic would seem to be perfectly fine. I am not advocating for one over the other. Just saying that for those of us on the outside it is not a clear cut choice, and whatever happens none of us should be surprised.

Actually, the kid couldn’t run progressions at the clock speed required. Nobody has a lot of time in the pocket. You’re dealing with 3-5 seconds. You need to be (1) identifying the D coverage immediately (sometimes masked only discovered after the snap), (2) going through your progressions in the first seconds to find your primary and make a decision to throw to where the receiver will be or check off to 2 or 3, all ideally in as close to parallel as humanly possible. The QB job is as much upstairs as an arm.

The super athletic RPO guys are great for compensating for slow processors. Just read your primary and tuck and go if you don’t know what to do next. The great RPO guys to it all (like a Mahomes).

ZT is not an RPO QB. He is too slow. ZT is not a pocket passer that can process fast. ZT has a good arm, but widely inaccurate in short to medium routes. He is a QB 3 all day long unless the other guys suck worse.

It's one thing to suggest you think ZT will start based on fall camp performance.

It's another thing to suggest he'll get beat put in camp and start anyway because he's seen NC St before (And played really poorly in thst game).

The BC-Maine game was 28-10 at the half. Maine was throwing on every down in the second half it seemed. Not knocking Fagnano because he looks like a solid guy but you really can’t compare his stats vs BC to Zion’s. Totally different circumstances.
