Silas Demary Visit

I care about production, impacts and wins. If Hurley and his staff cannot upgrade two of the four you mentioned, and push on one of them, next year's team will be just as maddeningly inconsistent as this one and also not play beyond the first weekend.

Yes, the rest of us don't care about those things. We only care about who knows what!

UConn fans are incredibly spoiled.

If next year's team doesn't get another lottery pick (McNeeley), 2x national champ who knows the offense like the back of his hand (Karaban), 4 year contributor at center who was integral to the success of the defense and who blocks anything down low (Samson), and the BE's 6th Man of the Year and 3 years of knowledge running the offense (Diarra), then expectations that they'll be better by losing all this are wild.

Not sure why I think an event on what was called the Silas Dean Hgwy when I lived there in formative years is BY worthy, I just remember the Berlin Trpk and Silas Dean as places you might go to race cars in the late 70’s and early 80’s and then they became majors speeding ticket trap roads.

I dont know about this on, I really do feel like we did a good job constructing this years team but alot of things just didnt work out the way we hoped whereas the last two seasons everything worked out better than we hoped.... Last year, McNeeley got hurt and then never recovered to being the guy he was before the injury, Karaban clearly lost his confidence and was just not the guy we hoped for, stewart did not develop at all, got nothing from two of our freshman, big men were good but had fouling problem all year, and mahaney just wasnt good enough.... So while i think the team was well put together it ended up being a team that just didnt fit together the way we want, when I look to next year I see some elite building blocks between 3 mcdonalds all americans, furphy, ball, stewart and reed and if we get the right point guard in here to maximize everything else i absolutely think we can be a much better team even though our talent level will be relatively unchanged

I dont know about this on, I really do feel like we did a good job constructing this years team but alot of things just didnt work out the way we hoped whereas the last two seasons everything worked out better than we hoped.... No the team wasn’t constructed in at least what was the winning formula the last two yrs. We had smaller guards and no real inside presence. That killed defense and rebounding. We all hoped that our shooting would be better and that would compensate for the obvious issues heading into the season but our shooting never came around.

I think of the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury and Demery’s of New Haven for cheap beer and good pizza.

I’ll take it as a sign that we’re destined to be his landing spot.

Newton was a point guard - maybe a bit unorthodox, but he averaged 5 assists before he got here, then bumped it up to 6 his senior year, which was top 20 in the country. In the postseason last year, he averaged 8 - Ryan Nembhard and Braden Smith were the only guys who averaged 8 this year.

But yes, we also had guys at the 2 and 3 who had point guard skills and we became a pretty impressive offensive team because we had so many guys who could score or create. Newton could run around off the ball and we wouldn’t skip a beat.

We ended up with guys with different skill sets at the 2 and 3 this year - and we lost Clingan’s passing too. Alex picked up some of the slack and doubled his assist total from something like 1.4 to 2.8. But it meant that a passing point (Hassan) clearly fit better and was our most indispensable piece.

Assuming Alex moves on, we have even more of a premium on a passer.

That’s my worry about Silas. He had a 19% assist rate which isn’t that great for a PG.

For reference, Newton was 34% his last year at ECU and never dropped below 27%. RJ Cole was the same at Howard and for his career. Diarra was at 35% this year.

Mahaney was at like 14% for St Mary’s and 19% for us this year.

We’ll have a lot of mouths to feed in next years offense and could use a guy who is a table setter moreso than someone who will be competing with them for shots.

Why didn't you give Diarra's assist rate for his two seasons at A&M or his two seasons at UConn before this season?

Because that was all in a backup role. Silas has been a starter with high usage.

13 PPG on 39% shooting and a 19% assist rate doesn’t scream the fit we’re looking for offensively at PG IMO.

But he’s 6’5 and is a 37% 3 point shooter who can play defense so he checks those boxes.

But you also have to add the context of Georgia's offense, who was 285th in the country in assists/FGM. It was a very iso heavy offense, whereas UConn is opposite. That's been a pretty consistent trend for Mike White at Georgia and Florida, so my instinct is that's not a Silas Demary issue, but a Mike White/Georgia problem

But Hass was our starting point guard this season. Why would you only use his numbers from this season when you're using Demary's #'s from last season.

It's strange to cherry pick. You gave the assist rates for Tristen at ECU who played horrible competition compares to Demary Jr's competition and Cole played one of the worst slates in the country at Howard. Demaray Jr. played against 15 ranked teams this season.

Also as Navery points out you didn't factor in the offenses these schools had.

I don't think Demary is a passing savant. I don't think he'll be as good a passer as Newton if he comes to UConn.

But he should be better than Mahaney, while adding a lot more value in other ways.
